Protecting wooden leather and lacquered furniture during a summer move

Furniture in summer
Every material needs its own protection in high summer
Carry gently
During a summer move, furniture often stands in the sun longer than expected: on the pavement, on the load bed, in front of the entrance. Solid wood reacts to warmth and dry air because it releases moisture and shrinks slightly in the process – gaps and cracks are the result. Leather dries out and fades, and dark high-gloss fronts heat up particularly strongly. At Beste Umzug Unternehmen we discuss during the survey which pieces are delicate, and plan blankets, padding and the loading order accordingly.
We carry heavy solid-wood furniture as early in the day as possible, and delicate surfaces stay in the cool stairwell or in the flat until they are loaded. We quote the fixed price after the survey. Your belongings are covered by liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB) (§ 451e: €620 per m³), and additional insurance is possible on request. That way the dining table, leather sofa and display cabinet reach the new flat without heat damage.

Have delicate furniture planned in advance
A survey with an eye on the materials
An antique wardrobe, leather sofa or high-gloss kitchen? Tell us about delicate pieces when you enquire. Then we plan blankets, padding and a loading order in which this furniture stands in the sun for as short a time as possible. Call us on 01625978461 – the quote is free of obligation.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

How we protect furniture on hot days
Shade, padding, short distances
Most heat damage does not happen during the journey but while waiting: furniture stands on the pavement until the next space in the vehicle is free. That is why we only carry delicate pieces down when they can be loaded straight away. We cover solid wood and leather with moving blankets, and we pad high gloss all round. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21), work at a fixed price after a survey and are liable under the HGB – more on furniture transport.

Six materials, six rules
Not every piece of furniture reacts to heat in the same way. These six rules help if you pack or prepare yourself – whether you move with us or with friends.
Keep solid wood out of the sun
Cover leather
Pad high gloss
Protect veneer from moisture
Carry glass upright
Rest after arrival
Part load for single items
Only a solid-wood wardrobe or a leather sofa needs to move? Then a part load (Beiladung) may be suitable: the piece of furniture travels on a tour with other jobs. In summer: cover it well, agree the collection and delivery days in advance, and do not let the piece wait outdoors for long.

What
sun does to furniture
Wood is a natural material that absorbs and releases moisture. In warmth and dry air it shrinks, and in moisture it swells – solid wood reacts to this more strongly than coated boards. Leather loses oils and colour in the sun, and lacquer and plastic get warm and more prone to pressure marks. During a move, what matters most is therefore how long a piece of furniture stands in the sun. You can read how to pack boxes properly in the heat in the article Packing in the heat.

Questions on furniture in the heat
Solid wood and veneer: why heat does damage
Wood absorbs moisture from the air and releases it again. In warmth and dry air it shrinks, and in moisture it swells. If a solid-wood table stands in the sun for hours, the surface dries faster than the inside – in the worst case cracks appear and joints open up. Veneer can come loose when warmth and moisture come together, for example under film.
So plan short distances: only carry wooden furniture down when it is loaded straight away, and cover it with blankets instead of film. During furniture transport we do not place such pieces against the sunny side wall.
Transporting leather, high gloss and glass correctly
Leather dries out and fades in the sun, which is why a light-coloured blanket belongs over the sofa and armchair. High-gloss and lacquered fronts get warm and softer – straps and hard edges then leave marks more easily. Pad them all round.
Carry glass panels and mirrors upright and well padded. In the new flat, wooden furniture needs a little time: do not put it straight in front of a south-facing window.
