Electronics on a Winter Move: Avoiding Condensation

Electronics in winter
Tech safely through the cold
Warm first, then on
In frost, the biggest risk to electronics is not the cold itself but the moment a cold device comes into the heated flat: humidity then condenses on circuit boards and displays. If you switch the device on too early, short circuits can occur. Our movers at Beste Umzug Unternehmen carefully pad televisions and computers and load them so that they do not stand in the cold cargo space any longer than necessary. We discuss the process for your private move in advance.
The easiest way to protect your tech is with the original packaging or a well-padded box that stays closed while warming up – that way the box mists up instead of the device. Back up your data before dismantling, photograph the cabling and put remote controls and power supplies in a labelled bag. During the survey we talk about delicate devices such as projectors, hi-fi systems or aquarium equipment. This preparation is particularly worthwhile for long-distance moves with many hours on the road.

How we bring tech through the winter
Pad, load, wait
Electronics come through a winter move well if they are padded, kept dry and handled with patience. We load delicate devices last whenever possible and unload them first so that they do not stand in the cold longer than necessary. In your new home we put them in a heated room and point out the waiting time before switching on. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21), give you the fixed price after the survey and are liable for your belongings under the German Commercial Code (HGB).

How we protect your devices
Electronics need no special treatment on a winter move, but they do need care: good padding, short trips through the cold and enough time to warm up. We pay attention to these three points with every device – from the television to the router.
Little time in the cold
Well padded
Clear advice
Cables and accessories sorted
Dry from van to house
Set up somewhere warm
Part loads for individual devices
For single devices or a few boxes, a part load is worthwhile: your goods travel on a tour that is already planned. Pack electronics especially well for this, ideally in the original box, and let them warm up for a few hours after delivery before switching them on.

Moving
electronics in winter
A winter move puts electronics in a special situation: outside it is below freezing, inside it is over 20 degrees. When moving into the warmth, condensation forms – on glass, metal and circuit boards. Good packaging, short trips through the cold and patience before switching on are therefore important. Batteries in laptops, smartphones and e-bikes also dislike low temperatures during use. We advise you on how to prepare your devices for a private move in winter.

Frequently asked questions about electronics on a winter move
Condensation: warming electronics up after the cold
When a cold device comes into a warm room, it cools the air at its surfaces – the moisture condenses as water, including on the inside. So only switch on electronic devices such as televisions, computers or games consoles once they have reached room temperature. Depending on size and how cold they are, this takes a few hours; with large televisions it is better to wait longer.
Leave the devices in their closed packaging while doing so; then the box mists up instead of the electronics. Pay attention to the information in the operating instructions. You can read more about packing safely in the article Securing electrical appliances for transport.
Batteries, displays and data in frost
Low temperatures harm lithium-ion batteries above all during use. Only charge and use your laptop, tablet or e-bike battery after the move once they are warm; ideally carry your smartphone and laptop in your own luggage.
Displays are more sensitive to pressure in the cold, so televisions belong in the van upright and padded, never with weight on top. Back up your data before dismantling and note down login details for your router and streaming services – that way your home network is quickly set up again after warming up.
Costs of a winter move
Moving costs depend above all on the size of your flat. Here is our price range:
- 1-room flat: from €369
- 2-room flat: from €594
- 3-room flat: from €915
- 4-room flat: from €1,344
- House or villa: individual quote
For long-distance moves we charge from €3.85/km. Use our free survey to get an exact quote.
What sets the price
The distance is charged from €3.85/km, while the volume determines the basic time required. The floor and lift affect the carrying time, and a parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) the loading time. A part load is also possible and can reduce costs.
