Moving Alongside Your Job: What to Agree With Your Employer

Guide for working people · Part 1
Talk to your employer first, then book moving day
Leave and time off
If you work full time, you should not set the moving date before your employer knows about it. There is no statutory entitlement to special leave for a private move; whether a paid day off is possible is set out in the collective agreement, a works agreement or your employment contract. Our private move takes care of carrying, transport and assembly, so a single day of leave is often enough.
Plan a buffer day and submit your leave request early – especially in holiday periods, your preferred day will otherwise be taken. We quote the fixed price after the survey so that you can give your employer a fixed date. Your household goods are covered under the German Commercial Code (HGB), and additional insurance is available on request. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21); destinations with their own page can be found under our locations.

Agree the date, then book firmly
Fixed price after a survey – predictable for your leave allowance
Call us on 01625978461, give us two or three possible days, and at the same time clarify leave with your employer. After the survey you receive a fixed-price quote for your change of home – so the date is fixed before you submit your leave request.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

How we save you days of leave
A fixed date for your leave request
For your employer, what matters most is a reliable date. That is why we set the moving date firmly after the survey and quote the fixed price before you apply for leave. If we take care of packing, dismantling and assembly, one day off is usually enough for a move within the city. Your household goods are covered under the HGB. Whether within Berlin or as a long-distance move – you know early on how many days you need.

How to fit the move into your work schedule
A move alongside your job works when your employer, landlord and removal company all know the same date. You should clarify these points early – the sooner, the greater the choice of moving dates.
Request leave early
Check your contract
Clear communication
Use working from home
Plan a buffer
Report your new address
Part load: no full day of leave needed
If only individual pieces of furniture or a few boxes are moving, a part load may suit: your household goods travel along with other jobs. The time window is somewhat more flexible than with your own transport – so arrange half a day or working from home with your employer rather than a fixed day of leave.

What
working people should clarify before the move
The first part of our series Moving for working people is about the conversation with your employer: leave request, a day off under your contract, working from home in the week of the move and the new address for the HR department. If you clarify these points early, you can book the moving date firmly. A moving checklist with deadlines helps you not to forget anything.

Frequently asked questions about your employer, leave and moving
Preparing the conversation with your employer
Before you book the moving date, you should know which days are possible in your team. Prepare the conversation: when is the key handover, how many days do you realistically need, and which tasks can colleagues take over? If you bring two or three possible dates, you are more likely to get approval – especially in the holiday season.
Also clarify whether you may work from home on individual days in the week of the move. A day working from home before the move is often enough to accept boxes or let the electrician into the new flat. If a removal company takes care of carrying and assembly, moving day itself remains the only day on which you really cannot work.
Leave or a day off? What your contract says
There is no statutory entitlement to special leave for a private change of home. § 616 BGB only secures your pay in the case of a short, unavoidable absence for personal reasons – whether a move falls under this is disputed, and collective or employment agreements can exclude the rule or define it more precisely. Many collective agreements provide for a paid day, especially for a move for work reasons. More on this in the article Special leave for a move.
If nothing is stated in your contract, you take regular leave. With a fixed price after a survey you know beforehand how long the move will take and only apply for as many days as you really need.

What determines the price – and your days off
Important factors are the volume of your household, the distance (from €3.90/km) and the floor, with or without a lift. A parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) may also be needed. For further services see furniture assembly and part load.
