Transporting Antique Furniture

Moving antiques
Transporting antique furniture: veneer, inlays, wooden crate
Moving heirlooms safely
Antique furniture often consists of pieces handed down over generations that have far more than material value. When transporting antiques, we therefore use multi-layer blankets, bubble wrap and, for delicate parts, sturdy wooden crates. The weak points of historic furniture are above all inlays, veneers, loose fittings and delicate carvings – we pad them individually and prefer to carry large pieces with two or three people. That way your antique piece arrives at its new home undamaged.
Record the condition of every antique piece with photos before transport – that way any damage can be clearly attributed later. Statutory liability for a move is limited to €620 per cubic metre of loading space (§ 451e HGB); for valuable pieces, special insurance at actual value is therefore advisable, which we can include on request. For a private move with historic furniture we offer a free advance survey in which we calculate the effort involved. Find out more about our services under private move.

How we move antique furniture
Care & fair prices
When transporting antique furniture, every move of the hand counts: we remove top sections, glass doors and drawers, pad veneers and edges individually and secure everything against slipping in the vehicle. Liability is governed by the statutory rules under the HGB; on request you can additionally insure valuable pieces at their actual value. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and handle transports in Berlin and throughout Germany at a fixed price after a survey. For museum pieces or climate-sensitive art, we openly recommend a specialist fine-art shipper.

Frequently asked questions about transporting antique furniture
Professional packing for antique furniture
Packing antique furniture requires special materials such as moleskin blankets, corner protectors and sturdy cardboard to protect against knocks and scratches. Delicate surfaces such as veneers or marquetry are never wrapped directly in adhesive tape or stretch film, but are first protected with blankets or tissue paper. Find out more under packing service.
For particularly fragile items we use custom-made wooden crates that provide extra protection during transport. That way we make sure every detail of your heirloom is preserved.
Transport and logistics for historic furniture
When transporting antique furniture, we plan the route so that the vehicle does not stand still for longer than necessary. In the cargo area the pieces are placed upright, padded and secured against slipping with straps.
When loading and unloading, we carry heavy pieces with several people and lift them by their sturdy parts, never by top sections or decorative mouldings. On request we take care of assembly at the new location. After transport in cold weather, let solid wood furniture acclimatise in the room first before removing the film.
