Moving IKEA Furniture

Chipboard handled with care
Moving IKEA furniture: dismantle, label, reassemble
Without a missing screw
Anyone who has ever dismantled a PAX wardrobe or a BILLY bookcase knows: without a system, a screw or a dowel ends up missing. IKEA furniture is mostly made of chipboard with cam lock connectors and wooden dowels – every dismantling puts strain on the drill holes, and a torn-out connection holds less well on the second assembly. That is why it is worth asking what really needs to be taken apart: an empty, low shelf can often be carried in one piece, whereas a tall wardrobe rarely fits through the stairwell.
Whatever is dismantled gets a label and a bag for the small parts, which stays with the piece of furniture. With our private move you book dismantling, transport and assembly together, and you know the fixed price after the survey. We pad glass doors and mirrored fronts, for example on HEMNES or PAX, individually; we are liable for your belongings under the German Commercial Code (HGB). At the new place, fix tall furniture back to the wall with the anti-tip restraint.

What makes IKEA furniture delicate
Chipboard, dowels, fittings
Furniture such as PAX, BILLY or MALM is made of chipboard with a foil or lacquered surface, and the back panels are often thin hardboard. The edges are sensitive to knocks, drill holes wear out with repeated dismantling, and plastic dowels break if parts are moved under tension. That is why we only dismantle what is necessary, work with the right tools and protect edges and fronts with blankets. You know the fixed price after the survey, and we are liable for damage under the statutory rules.

Six rules for IKEA furniture
Whether a piece of IKEA furniture survives the move well is usually decided during dismantling and carrying, less often on the journey. These six rules help – whether you do it yourself or hire us.
Only dismantle what you must
Have the instructions ready

Number the parts
Load flat and padded
Refix at the destination
Just one wardrobe or one bed?

Your
move – fully organised
Alongside IKEA furniture transport, we can also move individual rooms or your entire flat on request. If you only want furniture dismantled and reassembled, you will find that under furniture assembly. With a long-distance move, dismantling large furniture saves space in the lorry and prevents damage, because flat parts are easier to secure. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21); you will find places with their own pages under locations.

Questions about moving IKEA furniture
How to dismantle IKEA furniture successfully
Before dismantling, check whether you still have the original assembly instructions – they make reassembly much easier later. If they are missing, simply download the matching instructions from the IKEA website and keep them ready. Start by removing moving parts such as doors and drawers before taking the main frame apart.
All small parts such as screws, dowels and fittings go into labelled bags attached directly to the relevant piece of furniture. That way nothing gets lost in transit and assembly in the new flat is quick and free of confusion. Larger elements such as back panels or shelves are additionally fitted with edge protectors to prevent scratches.
Transport and reassembly made easy
During transport, what matters most is the right packaging and load securing, so that individual furniture parts do not slip or rub against each other. We use blankets, film and edge protectors; small parts and glass shelves from ranges such as BILLY or HEMNES go into their own boxes. That way every component stays protected during the journey, whether it is a short move across town or a longer route.
If you have booked assembly, we put the furniture back together following the original instructions – including fine adjustment of doors and drawers. As a result, every piece sits just as stably and precisely in its new location as before. You do not have to worry about anything else and can start settling into your new flat straight away.
