Heavy items guide

Safes and heavy items when moving: measure first, then carry

Weight, route, floor

Unsere Firma is based in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and clarifies before the move whether carrying is enough or special equipment is needed.

A safe can easily weigh several hundred kilograms – often more than it looks. Before it is moved, three things must be clear: the exact weight (type plate or manufacturer's details), the route through doors, hallways and stairwell, and the load capacity at the new location. Floors in flats are usually designed for a distributed imposed load of 1.5 kN/m², i.e. around 150 kg per square metre. A heavy safe puts its weight on a small area – so for heavy models a structural engineer or the property management belongs in the planning.

Besides safes, washing machines, solid wood wardrobes or a piano also count as heavy furniture. Whether we can carry a piece ourselves with straps and a hand truck or whether a specialist firm with a stair climber or crane is needed, we clarify after a survey and once we know the weight – honestly, before anything gets damaged. For a piano there is a separate service, piano transport. Heavy single items can easily be combined with a private move.

Have heavy items assessed beforehand

Give weight and dimensions, get a fixed price

Call us on 01625978461 and tell us the weight, dimensions, floor and access of your safe or heavy piece of furniture. After the assessment we will tell you whether we can take it on and quote a fixed price – also as part of a long-distance move. Photos of the stairwell and the planned location help with the assessment, as does the safe's type plate.

Quotes available individually based on workload, scheduling and the desired scope of services.

How we handle heavy items

Plan rather than improvise

For heavy single items such as a safe, we plan before moving day: weight, dimensions, door widths, stairwell and location at the destination. Whether straps, a hand truck and enough movers are sufficient or a specialist firm with special equipment is needed, we tell you beforehand. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21); we quote the price as a fixed price after the assessment. For household goods we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre – for compact, heavy items that is not much, so additional insurance is worthwhile here.

Contents separately

An empty safe is lighter and safer. You pack the contents yourself; the packing service is not intended for valuables.

Check the route first

Door widths, bends in the stairwell, steps at the entrance: when moving furniture that is heavy, the route decides the equipment and the number of movers.

Release the anchoring

If the safe is anchored, it must be released beforehand. For built-in safes and at the new location, the manufacturer or a safe specialist firm can help.

Space in front of the building

With heavy items every metre counts. A parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) ensures the lorry stands right in front of the entrance and the route stays short.
CLARIFY FIRST

Six questions before moving a safe

A safe does not forgive improvisation. These six questions should be answered before moving day – for your safety, that of your helpers and that of the building. The more of this is settled in advance, the more accurate the fixed price.

01

How heavy is it?

Check the type plate, invoice or manufacturer's details. Estimates are often way off – the exact weight determines everything else.
02

Will it fit through?

Compare width, height and depth with doors, hallways and bends in the stairs. If necessary, doors have to be taken off their hinges – clarify this with the landlord.
03

Will the floor hold?

Floors in flats are usually designed for an imposed load of 1.5 kN/m². For heavy safes, ask a structural engineer or the property management beforehand.
04

Will the stairs hold?

Wooden staircases in old buildings are delicate. Above a certain weight, a different route or special equipment is safer than carrying.
05

Is it empty?

The moving company is not liable for cash, jewellery, coins, securities and documents (§ 451d HGB). You transport the contents yourself.
06

How is it insured?

Statutory liability is calculated by cubic metres, not by weight or value. For an expensive safe, additional insurance is worthwhile.
FOR SMALL LOADS

Shared load for heavy single items?

Only by arrangement

A single heavy piece of furniture can travel as a shared load if weight, load securing and unloading at the destination have been clarified in advance. For very heavy safes, on the other hand, a separate transport with suitable equipment is usually the more sensible solution.

HEAVY ITEMS

What
matters with heavy items

Safes, pianos, large appliances

With heavy-load transport in a household, many factors come together: weight, dimensions, access to the building, load capacity of stairs and floor, and the value of the item. Whether a safe, piano or washing machine – every heavy item needs its own planning. For individual pieces of furniture without a complete move there is furniture transport, and for pianos the separate piano transport. If you give the weight and dimensions early, you avoid surprises on moving day.

Measure first

Find out weight and dimensions, walk the route from the old to the new location, photograph narrow points. With this information a safe transport can be planned realistically and a fixed price quoted. The destination counts too: floor level, flooring and position.

Move safely

Protect floors and stairs with boards or blankets, attach straps correctly, plan enough hands. When moving furniture that is heavy, haste is the biggest enemy; a small removal alone is often not enough for this.

At the new location

Decide on the location in advance and check its load capacity; have the safe anchored if necessary. If you have home contents insurance, ask about their anchoring requirements – they can be important for your insurance cover.

FAQ

Questions about safes and heavy items

Costs, equipment, liability, weight, duration, narrow doors and preparation – answered briefly.
The cost of moving a safe depends on weight, dimensions, access and distance. After the assessment we tell you whether we can take on the transport and quote a fixed price. Call us on 01625978461 and have the weight and dimensions ready.

What is needed to move a safe

Moving a safe takes more than muscle power: sturdy hand trucks with a high load capacity, straps, boards to protect floors and stairs and, for heavy models, stair climbers or lifting equipment. Which equipment is needed depends on weight, dimensions and route.

Walls, floors and banisters should be protected with blankets and edge protectors. For very heavy safes or difficult access, a safe specialist firm with special equipment is the safer choice – we will tell you so openly after the survey.

How a heavy-load transport works

First, during a survey or based on your details and photos, we check weight, dimensions and access. This determines how the item is moved, how many movers are needed and whether a specialist firm has to be involved.

On moving day the safe is moved empty, secured and under control, and set down at the location agreed in advance. We quote the price beforehand as a fixed price; liability is governed by § 451e HGB, and additional insurance is advisable for valuable items.

Fair prices, clear terms

  • Moving into a 1-room flat? Then you pay from €365.
