Moving a wardrobe: dismantle, pad, carry safely
Guide
A wardrobe is often the heaviest and bulkiest piece of furniture in a move. Before it is moved, it must be empty – clothes in boxes or wardrobe boxes, shelves and drawers taken out. Then the doors are removed and the carcass dismantled; every part gets a number, and screws and fittings go into a labelled bag that is taped to the part. If you take photos of how it is assembled, you will put it back together faster later. Also check whether the wardrobe is fixed to the wall; the anti-tip bracket is released before dismantling and fitted again at the new place.
For transport, edges and mirrors are padded with blankets and edge protectors, and glass is stood upright. In the lorry the parts stand upright and are secured with straps. If a wardrobe will not fit through the stairwell even when dismantled, sometimes the only option is a furniture lift through the window. More on this under Furniture transport. Measure doors, hallway and stairwell beforehand, and there will be no surprises on moving day.

What we handle when moving a wardrobe
Dismantling, transport, reassembly
We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and, when moving a wardrobe, handle dismantling, padding, carrying, transport and reassembly at the new place. We bring tools, blankets and straps; screws stay labelled with their part. Whether a furniture lift is needed is clarified beforehand based on dimensions and the stairwell. We are liable for your goods under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre; for antique pieces, additional insurance makes sense.

Dismantle,
transport, reassemble
Moving a wardrobe has three steps: dismantle systematically, transport with padding and straps, reassemble using photos and numbers. How to dismantle and reassemble furniture in general is explained in the article Dismantling and reassembling furniture. If the stairwell gets tight, the article on furniture in narrow stairwells helps. For single items over long distances, you will find information under long-distance moves.

Questions about moving a wardrobe
Dismantling a wardrobe: how to prepare for transport
Every wardrobe move usually starts with dismantling. Doors, shelves and back panels should be packed individually to avoid scratches and transport damage. Screws and small parts are best kept in labelled bags attached directly to the relevant piece of furniture.
On request, our team takes care of the dismantling completely for you – including proper packing with blankets and film. This saves you valuable time and ensures that reassembly at the new location goes smoothly.
Narrow stairwells and heavy wardrobes
Especially in older buildings with narrow stairwells, furniture transport becomes a real challenge. Carrying straps, sliding boards and, in individual cases, a furniture lift are used to get the wardrobe outside safely.
The right lifting technique and enough hands are what matter: carrying in pairs with straps and padding corners and banisters beforehand avoids injuries as well as damage to walls and banisters. Measure critical spots beforehand.
Costs for your next move
Plan your move stress-free! For a 1-room flat we charge from €349, for a 2-room flat from €584. For a 3-room flat costs start at €894, for a 4-room flat at €1,324. Houses and villas receive an individual quote. Longer distances? Long-distance moves cost from €3.90/km. Arrange a free survey.
How your moving price is composed
The decisive factors are above all the volume of your household goods and the distance between the old and new address, which is charged at €3.90/km. Then there are the floor, lift and a possible parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone). If you also book furniture assembly or a shared load, you should factor this into the calculation.
