Carrying during a move

Lifting heavy furniture: technique, equipment and limits

Guide

Unsere Firma is based in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and carries heavy furniture with straps, a sack truck and enough hands.

Many injuries during a move are caused not by accidents but by lifting incorrectly. The basic rules are simple: squat down, grip the load close to your body, come up from your legs with a straight back and do not twist your upper body while carrying – turn with your feet instead. Always carry heavy or awkward pieces in pairs, with clear commands on who lifts and puts down when.

Equipment makes the biggest difference: carrying straps spread the weight across shoulders and legs, and a sack truck and furniture dollies save effort on level ground. Dismantle furniture wherever possible and take out drawers, shelves and glass. With a piano, a safe or a washing machine on the fourth floor, it is time for help – more under Furniture transport. If you carry things yourself, clarify beforehand who is liable for damage, because there is no contractual liability when friends help.

FROM BERLIN

What we handle when carrying

Straps, sack truck, enough hands

We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and bring carrying straps, sack trucks, furniture dollies, blankets and enough movers to the move. We dismantle heavy furniture wherever possible and carry it in twos or threes, with padded edges and a protected stairwell. Pianos have their own piano transport service. We are liable for your goods under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre; additional insurance is possible.

Straps and dollies

Carrying straps, sack truck and furniture dollies spread the weight and save effort – the most important tools for any heavy furniture transport.

Dismantle first

Whatever can be dismantled is dismantled; drawers, shelves and glass come out beforehand – this makes every piece of furniture lighter and safer.

Stairwell protected

Blankets and edge protectors on corners, banisters and door frames prevent scratches and dents in the stairwell – and trouble with the landlord and neighbours.

Piano separately

Pianos are heavy but delicate; they have their own piano transport service with the right tools and enough staff.
PROTECT YOUR BACK

Six rules for lifting

These six rules protect your back, knees and furniture during a move. They apply to everyone who carries – friends, family and movers. And most importantly: anyone who is unsure or has back problems does not carry.

01

Lift with your legs

Squat down, back straight, come up using the strength of your legs – never lift from the lower back with a rounded back. This protects your spinal discs.
02

Close to the body

The further the load is from your body, the more it strains your back; grip furniture as close to your body as possible.
03

No twisting

Turn with your feet rather than your upper body; twisting under load is a common cause of back pain after a move.
04

In pairs, on command

One person calls out when to lift, put down or stop; this way both lift at the same time and nobody carries the full load alone.
05

Clear the way

Rug edges, boxes and cables out of the way, doors held open – tripping with a heavy chest of drawers rarely ends well.
06

Take breaks

Tired muscles lead to mistakes; plan breaks and drinks, and do not leave heavy pieces until the end, when your strength is fading.
FOR SMALL LOADS

Only one heavy piece?

Shared load instead of lugging it yourself
With a shared load, several consignments share the loading area on the same route. For a single heavy piece of furniture, this lowers the costs considerably, and nobody among your friends has to strain their back. You get a time window instead of a fixed date; we tell you after your enquiry whether a suitable route is running.

IN THREE STEPS

Prepare,
lift, carry

Heavy furniture without injury

You move heavy furniture in three steps: prepare by emptying and dismantling, lift correctly with technique and commands, carry safely with equipment and a clear path. If the stairwell is narrow, the article Furniture through a narrow stairwell helps. Another guide explains how to dismantle and reassemble furniture; for pianos there is the piano transport service.

Preparation

Empty it, dismantle it, take out drawers and glass, secure doors, clear the path and pad door frames. The lighter and more compact a piece of furniture is before lifting, the lower the risk to backs and walls. Photos help with reassembly.

Lift

Squat down, grip close to the body, back straight, come up from the legs – and in pairs on command. With carrying straps, the weight during furniture transport is spread across shoulders and legs instead of the lumbar spine.

Carrying

On the stairs the stronger person carries at the bottom; on level ground a sack truck and furniture dollies help. No twisting, take breaks, and with a piano, a safe or a washing machine on the fourth floor, better call in movers. Safety comes before speed.

FAQ

Questions about lifting heavy furniture

Technique, equipment, dismantling, number of people, stairwell, mistakes and costs – answered briefly.
What matters is a straight back and lifting with your legs, not your lower back. Squat down, grip the load close to your body and stand up in a controlled way. With very heavy pieces of furniture, never lift alone; always work in pairs or use professional lifting aids such as straps and dollies.

The right posture when lifting

When lifting heavy furniture, posture is crucial to avoid injuries to the spine. Squat down, keep your back straight and lift the load with your legs – never from your lower back. Hold the item as close to your body as possible to minimise the leverage on your spine.

It is also advisable to warm up your leg muscles briefly before lifting and to wear sturdy, non-slip shoes. With particularly heavy or bulky pieces of furniture, never lift alone; always work in pairs or with suitable equipment.

Equipment for safe furniture transport

Professional lifting aids such as carrying straps, dollies and sack trucks make moving heavy furniture much easier and protect both your back and the furniture. Especially in stairwells or narrow hallways, these tools ensure that the load is moved in a controlled and safe way.

Dismantling furniture properly before transport also considerably reduces weight and the risk of injury. Wardrobes, beds or shelves can often be taken apart into individual parts that are then easier and safer to carry – this saves effort and protects backs, walls and furniture alike.

The price of your move

How much will my move cost? We are happy to answer this question directly: we move 1-room flats from €344, 2-room flats from €605, 3-room flats from €899 and 4-room flats from €1,309. If you live in a house or villa, you receive an individual quote from us, as the effort varies greatly. If you are going further afield, we charge from €3.95 per kilometre for long-distance moves. The best way is to clarify all the details during a free survey.

What does the price of my move depend on?

First of all, volume counts – the more household goods, the higher the costs. The distance is charged from €3.95/km. A floor without a lift and a required parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) also increase the effort. Furniture assembly and a shared load are also worth considering as additional services.
