Techniques for moving furniture in a narrow stairwell
When moving furniture through a narrow stairwell, the right technique is what counts: furniture is often guided past tight spots upright, diagonally or with special turning manoeuvres. Our furniture packers measure the stair width, ceiling height and turning radius in advance to avoid damage.
In addition, protective blankets and edge protectors are used to keep both the piece of furniture and the handrails and walls free from scratches. For very bulky items such as wardrobes or living-room cabinets, partial dismantling is often worthwhile to reduce weight and size.
When a furniture lift is the better solution
If the stairwell is too narrow or winding, a furniture lift is a good option. Bulky pieces then go straight into the flat via the balcony or window, without putting any strain on the stairwell.
This method protects the building fabric and the movers' backs. If the lift stands on the pavement or road, in Berlin it needs a permit from the district – we plan that in. On upper floors without a lift in particular, the furniture lift is often the fastest and safest option.
