Re-registering Your Car: Costs & Process

Vehicle registration
Re-registering your car: without delay, often online and with your old number plate
After the move
After a change of residence you must notify the vehicle registration authority of your new address without delay – this is set out in § 15 of the Vehicle Registration Ordinance (FZV). The ordinance does not specify a fixed two-week deadline; “without delay” means without culpable hesitation. The prerequisite is that you have first registered with the registration office (Bürgeramt), because the vehicle registration authority needs your new registered address. Registering with the Bürgeramt is due within two weeks of moving in (§ 17 BMG).
If you move to a different registration district, you have a choice: apply for a new number plate or keep your existing one (§ 15 para. 4 FZV). If you keep it, you do not need new plates and do not have to present the registration certificate Part II. If you stay in the same district, only the address in Part I is changed. In Berlin both can also be done online. We take care of the move itself – you handle the visits to the authorities, and we tell you what is due when. Call us on 01625978461.

Plan the move, keep an eye on the paperwork
Fixed price after a survey
We handle your private move at a fixed price after a survey: carrying, transport, furniture assembly and, on request, the parking restriction zone. You take care of the re-registration with the Bürgeramt and the vehicle registration authority yourself – ideally schedule the appointment for the first few days after moving in, because the car can only be re-registered once you have your new registered address.
Quotes available individually based on workload, scheduling and the desired scope of services.

The right order after the move
First the Bürgeramt, then the registration
Re-registering your car is the second step, not the first. First you register with the Bürgeramt after moving in – with the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) from your landlord. Then you change the vehicle details with the vehicle registration authority, in person or online. Finally, you inform your car insurer of the new address, because the regional class and thus the premium can change with the registration district. Vehicle tax, on the other hand, stays the same: it is based on vehicle data, not on where you live, and is collected nationwide by customs. Routes from Berlin can be found under Long-distance moves.

What re-registration costs in Berlin
The fees for re-registering a car are set by each vehicle registration authority according to the fee schedule. As an example, here are the amounts Berlin lists on service.berlin.de – they may differ at your new place of residence.

Not driving the car yourself?
With a long-distance move, the car is usually driven there itself. If a second vehicle needs to be moved, ask about our vehicle transport. Re-registration at the new place of residence is not affected by this – it depends on your registered address, not on how the car gets there.

From
planning to assembly
Besides re-registering your car, there are further notifications to make after the move: registering with the Bürgeramt, the mail forwarding order and changing your address with banks, insurers and your employer. Our article Change of Address: Who Do You Need to Tell? gives an overview, and Re-registering After a Move explains the deadlines. What we take care of during the move itself can be read under Private move; other places can be found under Locations.

Questions about re-registering your car
How re-registering your car works after the move
Re-registering your car starts after you have registered with the Bürgeramt. The vehicle registration authority of your new place of residence is responsible. You should bring your ID card or passport with your registration certificate and the registration certificate Part I. You need Part II if you apply for a new number plate; if you keep your existing one, it is not required. With a new number plate, bring the old plates with you, and if the general inspection (Hauptuntersuchung) is due, proof of it.
Many vehicle registration authorities only work by appointment – book it online as soon as you have the registration certificate. In many cases private individuals can also re-register online (i-Kfz), in Berlin since October 2019. For this you need an ID card with the online function and, for the address change, a registration certificate Part I with a security code. Exactly which documents your new authority requires is stated on its website.
Costs and deadlines at a glance
The costs of re-registering a car are set by the vehicle registration authority; Berlin lists these amounts on service.berlin.de: re-registration after moving from elsewhere €17.50 basic fee plus further fees, for example for a personalised number plate. The address change alone when moving within Berlin costs €8.43 online, €11.40 at the Bürgeramt and €12.60 at the vehicle registration authority. New number plates are added on top if you change your number plate; they are not made by the authority but by a plate-making service.
The Vehicle Registration Ordinance does not specify a fixed deadline in days: the new address must be notified without delay (§ 15 FZV). Anyone who drags out the re-registration risks a warning fine. So schedule the appointment directly after registering with the Bürgeramt, which is due within two weeks of moving in. For a long-distance move we will tell you during planning which notifications are due when.
Costs in detail
We offer fair and transparent prices: for a 4-room flat we charge from €1,324, for 3 rooms from €894, for 2 rooms from €579 and for 1 room from €339. For houses or villas we always prepare an individual quote. Long distances are no problem either – here from €3.95/km applies for the long-distance move. It is best to clarify all the details during a free survey.
How is the moving price calculated?
The basis is always the volume of your removal goods. Added to this are the distance (from €3.95/km), the floor and whether a lift is available. For a smooth process on narrow streets we recommend a parking restriction zone. We are happy to combine this with furniture assembly or a shared load.
