Updating your insurance policies after a move

After the move
Updating insurance: contents, car, liability
New address, new details
A move affects not only furniture and boxes but also your insurance policies. The most important is contents insurance: the move must be reported, and for a transitional period cover applies in both the old and the new flat – the exact period is stated in your terms and conditions. During transport, it is first of all the moving company that is liable for damage to the belongings, under the German Commercial Code (HGB). For our private move that is €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is possible on request.
With car insurance the premium can change, because the regional class depends on the keeper's main residence. Personal liability, legal expenses and accident insurance usually only need the new address. On long-distance moves abroad, contents cover ends at the border with many insurers – clarify this beforehand. We are based in Berlin and take care of the transport; this guide helps you keep track of your policies.

A fixed price plus a checklist for your policies
Fixed price after a survey, liability under the HGB
After the survey we give you a fixed price for the move. You also receive a checklist of which bodies should be informed when updating your insurance – from contents to car. That way you combine the transport with a clear plan for the formalities afterwards.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

How we support you with updating
Transport by us, policies in view
We take care of the professional transport and give you a list of whom you should inform when updating your insurance. We are liable for your belongings under the HGB (§ 451e: €620 per m³) and inform you in advance about the option of additional insurance – whether for a private move or a long-distance move. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive nationwide. We give you the fixed price after the survey, so you can budget the costs reliably alongside new insurance premiums.

What counts when updating
Valuables such as jewellery, electronics or art need special protection when moving: the moving company is not liable for jewellery and money under § 451d HGB. After moving in, check whether the sum insured on your contents insurance still matches the value.

Part load: the same liability
With a part load, several customers share one transport, which saves costs. The same liability under the HGB applies to your belongings as with a vehicle of your own, calculated on the loading space your things need. We inform you in advance how far this protection extends.

More
than just insurance
Besides updating your insurance, other bodies belong on the list: registering at the Bürgeramt (registration office) within two weeks, mail forwarding, your bank, employer and the broadcasting fee. Anyone planning a private move should add these tasks to the checklist early. How to re-register your car is explained in the article Re-registering a car.

Frequently asked questions on updating insurance policies
Which insurance policies do you have to update when you move?
When you change home, it is mainly contents insurance, personal liability insurance and, where applicable, buildings insurance that are affected. Car insurance also needs the new address, because the regional class is based on the keeper's main residence and can change the premium. Your health insurance fund receives the new address; the additional contribution of a statutory fund does not depend on where you live.
Not to be forgotten are legal expenses, accident and life insurance, which also need the new address. A complete list of all current contracts helps you not to overlook anything when updating your insurance. With a private move in particular, early planning is worthwhile to avoid gaps in cover.
Deadlines and procedure: how to update your insurance in time
There is no single statutory deadline for all insurance policies; the duty to notify is set out in the respective terms and conditions. With contents insurance the move must be reported, so it is best to report it before moving day. With car insurance a quick notification is also worthwhile, as the new regional class can change the premium.
Before the moving date, draw up an overview of all policies with contract numbers and contact details. Many insurers accept address changes online or by email; have the change confirmed. That saves you time and avoids duplicate work in the stressful moving week.
What the move itself costs

| 3-room flat | €905 |
| 4-room flat | €1,309 |

These factors determine the moving price
A realistic moving price is made up of several components: the volume of your household goods, the distance (from €4.20/km) and structural conditions such as the floor and lift. A no-parking zone may also be needed. Optional services such as furniture assembly and a part load extend the offer.
