Change of Address: Who Do You Need to Tell?

After the move
Change of address: first the registration office, then everyone else
Who, when, how
At Beste Umzug Unternehmen, a move does not end with the last box. We give you a change of address checklist so that no authority and no contract partner is forgotten. Especially with a private move, the effort involved in re-registering is often underestimated: for the registration office (Bürgeramt) alone you need an appointment, your ID and the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung). If you know the right order, you save yourself unnecessary trips.
Whether it is a local move or a long-distance move – the duty to register is the same across Germany: you register with the registration authority within two weeks of moving in (§ 17 BMG). Our moving advisers point out the most important steps for re-registering during the very first conversation. That way you avoid last-minute visits to the authorities. We give you the fixed price after the survey – we take care of the transport, you take care of the formalities.

How we support you with your change of address
A checklist instead of a chaos of notes
A move is more than packing boxes and transporting furniture. That is why you receive a change of address checklist from us with every move – from re-registering at the registration office through vehicle registration and the licence fee service (Beitragsservice) to your bank and insurers. In Berlin you book the registration office appointment via service.berlin.de or the public service number 115; with the online ID function and BundID, registration can also be done online. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and handle the transport at a fixed price after a survey, so that you have time for these appointments.

Frequently asked questions about changing your address after a move
Authorities and offices: the compulsory re-registrations after a move
Every time you move home in Germany, there is a legal duty to register with the registration authority, in Berlin the registration office (Bürgeramt). You must register within two weeks of moving in (§ 17 BMG) and bring the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) from your landlord (§ 19 BMG). If you miss the deadline, you risk a fine. The tax office usually receives your new address via the registration data; self-employed people should still inform it themselves. Report every change of address to the vehicle registration office without delay – you can keep your existing number plate even when moving to another district.
Other important bodies are your health insurance fund, the job centre or employment agency and, where applicable, the immigration office. Families with children should also inform the school or nursery about the change of residence in good time. For a long-distance move to another federal state the same registration deadlines apply; what is usually new there are only the responsibilities, for example for nursery places or dog tax. We are happy to point this out during planning.
Contracts and private contacts: who else you should inform
Besides the authorities, there are many private contract partners who should know about your change of address. These include banks, insurers, your employer and your electricity, gas and internet providers. Clubs, magazine subscriptions and online shops such as Amazon should also be updated so that parcels and post reach the right address – find out more in the article Moving your contracts and subscriptions. A mail forwarding order with Deutsche Post bridges the transition period perfectly.
Don't forget personal contacts such as family, friends and doctors, who should also be told about your move. Especially with a private move, a clear list is worthwhile so that you don't forget anyone. Our moving experts will gladly help you with an individual checklist tailored to your personal situation. That way your change of address goes smoothly and completely.
