Contracts guide
Electricity, gas and internet when moving: keep or cancel?
Deadlines and meter readings
When moving, most people think of boxes first – yet electricity, gas and internet contracts do not move with you automatically. For electricity and gas: household customers may terminate their supply contract when moving with six weeks' notice, unless the supplier offers to continue at the new address on the existing terms. For internet, the provider must continue the contract at the new address if it offers the service there; otherwise you can cancel with one month's notice. So plan six to eight weeks before the move.
On moving-out and moving-in day, note the meter readings and photograph the meters. Without transferring, you may carry on paying for consumption in the old flat; in the new one, the local default supplier (Grundversorger) supplies you until you have a new contract, often at a higher price. We take care of the transport for your private move at a fixed price, so you have time for the contracts. For a long-distance move the same pattern applies – only the providers at the new location may differ.

You do the contracts, we do the transport

What we take on, what stays with you
Transport with us, contracts with you
Only you, as the contracting party, can transfer electricity, gas and internet – but we can take the move itself off your hands. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and take care of packing, carrying, transport and, if you wish, reassembly. We give the price as a fixed price after the inventory. A practical tip: note the meter readings on moving day before the boxes arrive; later on, a wardrobe is often standing in front of the meter cupboard.

Six steps for electricity, gas and internet
How to transfer electricity, gas and internet in the right order – with the statutory deadlines that apply when moving. The order depends on the lead time: internet takes longest, and the meter readings come right at the end.
Six to eight weeks ahead
Cancel or keep electricity and gas
Wait for the offer
Take out a new contract
Record the meter readings
Internet without an offer
Not much to move? Shared load
For small moving volumes, your household goods travel as a shared load with other consignments on the same route – often cheaper than a transport of your own, especially for long-distance moves. In return, the delivery date has some flexibility, usually a few days.

Other
contracts when moving
Besides electricity, gas and internet, there are further changes of address to make when moving: registration with the registration authority within two weeks, the postal mail forwarding order, insurance and bank. If you are changing city for a long-distance move, also check which providers are available at the new location. How registering with the authority now also works online is explained in the article Registering your new address online. An order that works well: internet first, then electricity and gas, post and insurance shortly before the move, the meter readings on moving day and registration in the two weeks afterwards. Collecting all contracts in one list with customer numbers makes them quicker to find when you are on the phone.

Questions about electricity, gas and internet when moving
Transferring electricity: step by step
To transfer electricity you need the meter reading on moving-out day, the meter number and your new address. Tell your supplier about the move early. If you want to switch, terminate with six weeks' notice effective from moving out; if the supplier offers within two weeks to continue at the new address on the same terms, the contract continues there (§ 41b Abs. 5 EnWG).
In the new flat, without a contract of your own, the default supplier supplies you at first. Note the meter reading there too, with the date and a photo, to avoid disputes with the landlord or utility. The same procedure applies to gas.
Internet and gas: connected without waiting
Transferring internet often needs the most lead time, because a connection has to be activated. So report the move about six weeks ahead. If your provider offers the service at the new address, it must continue it without changing the contract term; it may not charge more for the move than for a new connection. If the connection is not available there, you can cancel with one month's notice (§ 60 TKG).
When transferring gas, the same principle applies as for electricity: note the meter reading, inform the supplier, observe the deadlines. If you no longer need gas at the new location, say so in good time. That way internet and energy are ready on moving-in day.
