Private move: frequently asked questions

Private move
Private move: twelve questions, honestly answered
Frequent questions
Before a private move, almost everyone asks the same questions: what does it cost, how long does it take, who is liable if something breaks, and do I have to get the boxes myself? Then there are questions about parking restrictions, pets and re-registering. The answers below are short; they give the deadlines and rules that apply to every move and say openly where it depends on your home. If you cannot find your question, it is best to give us a quick call – many answers depend on the floor, access and furniture and can only be given precisely after a survey.
Two answers up front: a moving company is liable for damage under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre of load space, and after moving in you register with the registration office (Meldebehörde) within two weeks. Everything else depends on volume, floor and access. What we take care of when you move home is described under private move.

What we take on for a private move
In brief
We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and, for a private move, take care of dismantling, transporting and reassembling the furniture. On request we pack boxes, apply for the parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone), provide interim storage or take bulky items for disposal. We give you the price as a fixed price after a survey. We are liable for your goods under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre; for very valuable items, additional insurance is available.

Before
the move, on the day, afterwards
The questions about a private move fall into three phases: planning and costs beforehand, packing and carrying on moving day, and the formalities afterwards. Which mistakes cost the most is shown in the article Private move: avoiding mistakes. If you are leaving the city, you will find tips under long-distance moves. You will find the most common questions for each phase in the FAQ section below, each with a short answer.
Before: costs and date
On moving day: furniture and boxes
Afterwards: paperwork and post

Frequently asked questions about a private move
How a private move works
It starts with a free survey or video call, in which we record the volume, floor, lift and access. You then receive a quote with a fixed price in which dismantling, transport, reassembly and extras are listed separately.
On moving day we dismantle the furniture, load, drive and reassemble everything in the new flat. After that, all that remains for you is registering within two weeks.
Costs and savings potential in a private move
The cost of a private move depends mainly on volume, floor, lift, carrying distances and distance. You save if you sort things out beforehand, are flexible with the date or choose a shared load for a few items. 20% of the labour costs, up to a maximum of €4,000 a year, can be claimed against tax under § 35a EStG.
Moving costs at a glance
A move does not have to be expensive – with us you know where you stand from the start. For a one-room flat costs start from €349, while moving a two-room flat is possible from €599. If you want to move a three-room flat, you pay from €889, and for a four-room flat prices start from €1,344. If you own a house or villa, we prepare an individual quote for you. For long-distance moves we charge from €3.90/km. Arrange a free survey now and get your personal quote.
What does a move cost – and why?
Every move is calculated individually. The key factors are the volume of the furniture, the distance (from €3.90/km) and the floor and lift situation. If a parking restriction zone is needed, the price rises slightly. A shared load can often save money.
