Private move: how to recognise a good moving quote

What to look out for

Unsere Firma is based in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and lists every item of your move separately in the quote.

With a private move, a lot is already decided at the quote stage. Make sure the price is based on a survey or a video call and not on a quick estimate over the phone. A good quote lists dismantling, transport, assembly and extras such as packing, parking restriction or storage separately. Before the contract is concluded, the removal company must clearly point out to consumers its liability and the option of insurance (§ 451g HGB).

The statutory liability is €620 per cubic metre of cargo space; for very valuable items additional insurance is worthwhile. Also read what applies if you cancel: unless otherwise agreed, the company can charge a flat third of the agreed fee after a cancellation (§ 415 HGB). What we take care of when you move flat is described under Private move.

A quote you can check

Fixed price after a survey, every item separate

Call us on 01625978461. After a free survey or a video call we send you a written quote with a fixed price, in which dismantling, transport, assembly and extras are listed separately. That way you can compare it with other quotes at your leisure.

Quotes available individually based on workload, scheduling and the desired scope of services.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

Four points every quote should clarify

Price, liability, extras, cancellation

We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and, for a private move, handle dismantling, transport and assembly, and on request packing, parking restriction, storage and disposal. Before you hire us or another company, four points should be clear: how is the price arrived at, who is liable and for how much, which extras are included, and what applies if you cancel? We are liable for your household goods under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre.

Price after a survey

A fixed price is only as good as the survey behind it; during the survey, also show the cellar, attic and balcony.

Liability in writing

The quote should state the statutory liability of €620 per cubic metre and point out the option of additional insurance.

Extras itemised

Packing, parking restriction zone, furniture lift, storage and disposal should appear as separate items – not hidden in a lump sum.

Cancellation settled

Read the cancellation terms; unless otherwise agreed, § 415 HGB provides for a flat fee of one third on cancellation.
LOOK CLOSELY

Six warning signs

These six warning signs should make you wary in a private move – whichever removal company you use. If one of them appears in the quote or on the phone, ask before you sign.

01

Price without a survey

A binding price based on the number of rooms alone overlooks the cellar, floor and carrying distances; extra charges on moving day are then likely.
02

Cover promises without a figure

Advertising buzzwords are no substitute for facts: ask about the specific amount of liability and the terms of additional insurance.
03

No address

Reputable companies state their address and legal notice (Impressum); a bare mobile number with no address makes any later complaint difficult. Check this before you commit.
04

Cash payment in advance

Paying cash without an invoice costs you the tax bonus under § 35a EStG and any proof; pay by bank transfer.
05

Extras as a lump sum

If the quote says “assembly and materials included” without stating the scope, ask which furniture and how many boxes are meant.
06

No information on damage

The company must inform you about the form and deadline of a damage report at the latest on delivery (§ 451g HGB).
FOR SMALL LOADS

Shared load: what to look out for?

Put the time window in writing
With a shared load, several consignments share the cargo space on the same route. For single pieces of furniture, a room in a shared flat or boxes, this is often considerably cheaper. Make sure the collection period, delivery date and liability are agreed in writing, and label every item with your name and destination address so that nothing gets mixed up.

What matters when

What to look out for in a private move changes with the phase: before you commit, the quote; on moving day, the delivery; afterwards, the deadlines. What a fixed price includes and when it may change is explained in the article Private move at a fixed price. If you are leaving the city, you will find advice under long-distance moves.

Before committing

A survey instead of a phone estimate, items instead of a lump sum, the amount of liability and cancellation terms in black and white: if you check the quote this way, your private move brings no surprises on the bill on moving day.

On moving day

On delivery, check the furniture and boxes before you sign the receipt, and note visible damage straight away. With careful furniture transport and a padded load, this should remain the exception.

After the move

Report visible damage no later than the day after delivery and hidden damage within 14 days; register within two weeks; keep the invoice for the tax bonus and pay by bank transfer. Keep the quote and the delivery receipt.

FAQ

Questions: what to look out for in a private move?

Costs, date, liability, packing, shared load, survey and preparation – answered briefly.
There is no reliable average, because volume, floor, lift, carrying distances and distance vary greatly. Guide prices by number of rooms are in the price overview on this page. Make sure the binding fixed price is based on a survey and lists every item separately.

How a private move should go

A good process starts with a free survey or a video call. Make sure that furniture, number of boxes, floor, lift, access, and the cellar and balcony are recorded. This should be followed by a written quote with a fixed price that lists every item separately and clearly points out the liability and the option of insurance.

On moving day, furniture should be padded and the load secured; screws and small parts belong with the piece of furniture, labelled. On delivery at the latest, the company must inform you about the form and deadline of a damage report. Go through the furniture before you sign the receipt, and note visible damage immediately.

What to look out for in the price

The cost of a private move depends on volume, floor, lift, carrying distances, distance and extras. Only compare quotes if they include the same services – a low price without parking restriction, dismantling or materials often ends up more expensive. A fixed price after a survey stays the same as long as the service does not change.

Also read the conditions for cancellation: unless otherwise agreed, after a cancellation the company can charge either the agreed fee minus saved costs or a flat third (§ 415 HGB). Pay by bank transfer against an invoice; then you can deduct 20% of the labour costs, up to €4,000 a year, from tax.

Moving costs in detail

First the volume of the household goods is determined, then the distance (from €4.15/km) is calculated. After that, the floor and the lift situation are factored into the price. A parking restriction zone and additional services such as a shared load complete the calculation.
