Private move
Private move checklist: what is due three months, four weeks and two days before
Nothing forgotten
A good checklist for a private move is sorted by deadline, not by room. At the very top is notice on the old flat: tenants give three months' notice, no later than the third working day of a month (§ 573c BGB). Then come the moving date, the survey and the parking restriction; in Berlin the signs must be up 72 hours before the move. The last few weeks are about packing, sorting out and reading the meters.
After moving in, the paperwork begins: within two weeks you register with the registration office (Meldebehörde), with the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung). A Post Office mail forwarding order runs for a maximum of six months. Update the broadcasting licence fee (Rundfunkbeitrag) without delay, as well as the address on your vehicle registration document. What we take care of when you move home is described under private move.

Survey, fixed price, fixed date
Call us on 01625978461. After a survey or video call we give you a fixed price and fix the moving date – then the biggest point on your list is settled. The survey is free and non-binding. The quote lists dismantling, transport, reassembly and extras such as a parking restriction or packing service separately.
Quotes available individually based on workload, scheduling and the desired scope of services.

Which tasks we can take on
Your list, our work
We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and, for a private move, can take on several points on your list: applying for and setting up the parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone), packing boxes, dismantling, transporting and reassembling furniture, storage and disposal. Notice, re-registering, mail forwarding and meter readings remain with you. We are liable for your goods under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. It is best to agree during the survey which points we should take on; they will then be listed separately in the quote and you can cross them off your list.

Only a few items on the list?

Before,
on the day, afterwards
This checklist divides a private move into three parts: preparation, moving day and the formalities afterwards. How the move works step by step and what makes it more expensive is explained in the article Private move: process and costs. If you are leaving the city, you will find tips under long-distance moves. And if you want to know which mistakes cost the most money when moving, you will find them in the article on typical moving mistakes.

Questions about the moving checklist
The checklist in the right order
It starts with notice on the old flat, because this determines the latest moving-out day. Tenants give three months' notice, no later than the third working day of a calendar month. Once the moving-in date is fixed, the survey, quote and moving date follow, then the parking restriction zone and packing.
On moving day, what counts is a bag with documents and medication, photographed meter readings and a handover report for the old flat. Then come the formalities: registration within two weeks with the landlord confirmation, mail forwarding, the broadcasting licence fee, vehicle papers and the new address for your bank, insurer and employer.
What on the list saves money
The volume has the biggest influence on the cost of a private move. Whatever is sorted out before the survey is not included in the calculation, so book bulky waste collection early. Short carrying distances also save time: a parking restriction zone outside the door is usually cheaper than long walks to the lorry.
For privately arranged moves, part of the moving costs can be claimed against tax: under § 35a EStG, 20% of the labour costs, up to a maximum of €4,000 a year. For this you need an invoice and must pay by bank transfer – the tax office does not accept invoices paid in cash. Different rules apply to a work-related move: in that case you can claim the costs as income-related expenses; clarify the details with the tax office or a tax adviser.
What does a move in Germany cost?
The price range for a move is wide and depends on many factors. In principle, our prices start at €359 for a one-room flat, €599 for a two-room flat, €905 for a three-room flat and €1,329 for a four-room flat. Larger properties such as a house or villa are calculated individually. For a long-distance move we charge from €4.15/km. Take advantage of our free survey to get clarity about your costs.
