Organising a private move: a plan for moving day

Move stress-free

Unsere Firma is based in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and works to your plan on moving day – room by room, box by box.

Stress during a private move rarely comes from the amount of stuff, but from a lack of order: nobody knows which box belongs where, the key to the cellar is missing, and the lorry is double-parked. Anyone organising moving day should therefore assign roles. One person keeps an overview and answers the movers' questions, one looks after children or pets, and one takes care of the handover of the old flat.

Add to that three simple tools: a room plan of the new flat with numbers or colours that go on every box; a bag with documents, keys, charging cables and medication that you carry yourself; and a parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) in front of both doors, signposted 72 hours in advance in Berlin. We take care of the rest. More on this under Private move. A buffer is also important: if you can avoid it, do not schedule the handover of the old flat for the same afternoon as moving in.

Who does what on moving day

Your plan, our hands

We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and, for a private move, handle the carrying, loading, driving and furniture assembly, and on request packing and the parking restriction too. You keep the overview: you show us which boxes should go out first and where each piece of furniture goes in the new flat, and you hand over the old flat. We are liable for your household goods under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre; for very valuable items additional insurance is available.

One contact person

One person from your household answers all the movers' questions on moving day – so nobody waits, and every decision is made only once during the move.

Room plan on the door

Stick numbers or colours on the doors of the new flat; the same marking on every box gets it to the right room without any questions.

A bag for the day

Documents, keys, charging cables, medication and something to eat belong in a bag you carry yourself – never between the boxes in the lorry.

Parking restriction at both doors

If the lorry stands right outside the door, the carrying distance stays short; on request we apply for the parking restriction zone at both the old and the new address.

Six tricks against moving stress

A calm private move depends on small things you can sort out in advance. These six tricks take little time and take a lot of pressure off moving day – whether you carry things yourself or hire a removal company.

01

Plan backwards

Write the move-in date at the top and count backwards: notice, survey, parking restriction, packing – every task gets a date.
02

Pack room by room

Pack one room after another, starting with the cellar and storeroom; that way the flat stays liveable and tidy until the end.
03

First-night box

Put bedding, towels, toiletries, coffee and tools in a separate box that is loaded last and unloaded first.
04

Screws in bags

Screws and small parts of each dismantled piece of furniture go into a labelled bag that is taped to the piece of furniture.
05

Photograph the meters

Photograph the electricity, gas and water meters on moving-out and moving-in day; this saves disputes over the final bill with the landlord and the utility.
06

Children and pets looked after

On moving day, children and pets are best looked after by friends or grandparents – for their safety and to keep the way clear.
FOR SMALL LOADS

Only a little to move?

Shared load instead of your own lorry
With a shared load, several consignments share the cargo space on the same route. For single pieces of furniture, a room in a shared flat or boxes, this is often considerably cheaper than your own transport, and you need to organise neither a hire van nor helpers. Enter the time window for collection and delivery in your plan so that moving out and moving in still fit together.

IN THREE PHASES

move, settle in

How the steps fit together

A stress-free private move has three phases: preparation with deadlines and a packing plan, moving day with clear roles, and arrival with unpacking and paperwork. If you need the deadlines sorted by week, the overview Planning a private move will help. If you are leaving the city, you will find advice under long-distance moves; for single items there is furniture transport.

Preparation

Plan backwards from the move-in date, draw a room plan, apply for the parking restriction, pack room by room: if you take care of these points weeks in advance, your private move will bring a calm final week instead of a long night before the date.

Moving

One contact person, a bag for the day, boxes with room numbers: with a packing service, careful furniture transport and the lorry outside the door, moving day runs to plan, and nobody is searching for the right room.

Settling in

Beds and kitchen first, then the rest: with the first-night box, the first evening is relaxed. In the two weeks after that come registration, mail forwarding and your new address for the bank and insurance – and then the move is done.

FAQ

Questions about organising the move

Costs, date, liability, packing, duration, shared load and preparation – answered briefly.
The cost of a private move depends on volume, floor, lift, carrying distances, distance and extras such as a packing service or storage. Guide prices by number of rooms can be found in the price overview on this page. After a free survey we quote a fixed price in which every service is listed separately and which only changes if you add services later.

The process of a home move step by step

It starts with a free survey or a video call. We record furniture, number of boxes, floor, lift and access and discuss the order with you: which rooms do we clear first, what will you pack yourself, where can the lorry stop? You then receive a quote with a fixed price.

In the weeks before, you pack room by room and label every box with the number of its destination room; the parking restriction zone is applied for and set up. On moving day we dismantle, load in the agreed order, drive and reassemble according to your room plan. Finally, you walk through the old flat with the landlord and sign the handover report.

Costs and tips for your home move

The cost of a private move depends on volume, floor, lift, carrying distances, distance and extras such as a packing service. Good organisation lowers it directly: sorting out reduces the volume, applying for the parking restriction zone in good time shortens the carrying distance, and labelling boxes saves time when unloading. A fixed price after a survey stays the same as long as the service does not change.

Tip: only have done what you cannot do well yourself – such as heavy wardrobes and assembly – and pack books and clothes yourself. For privately arranged moves, 20% of the labour costs, up to €4,000 a year, can be deducted from tax (§ 35a EStG); pay by bank transfer for this. For long distances you will find advice under Long-distance moves.

What influences the moving price?

The price of your move is made up of several factors: the volume of your household, the distance between the old and the new flat (from €4.20/km), and the floor and whether there is a lift. A required parking restriction zone is also reflected in the costs. Additional services such as furniture assembly or a shared load can also change the price.
