A Home Move with Professionals: The Advantages

Private move
Moving yourself or hiring a moving company: what really makes the difference
The advantages
Doing a private move yourself looks cheap: a hire van, a few friends, boxes from the DIY store. For a small ground-floor flat, that can work well. It gets difficult with heavy wardrobes, narrow stairwells and the fourth floor without a lift – and with the question of who pays if the mirror breaks or the door frame gets damaged. When friends help, there is no contract that regulates liability.
If you hire a moving company, it is liable for damage to your goods under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre of load space. It brings the lorry, materials and tools, applies for the parking restriction on request and reassembles furniture. Part of the costs can be claimed against tax. What we take care of when you move home is described under private move.

Weigh doing it yourself against a quote
Fixed price after a survey – then compare
Whether a moving company is worth it for you is shown by a concrete price. Call us on 01625978461; after a survey or video call we give you a fixed price. You can then weigh it up at your leisure against a hire van, materials and your own time.

What a moving company does differently
Four differences from doing it yourself
We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and, for a private move, bring the lorry, furniture blankets, straps, sack truck and tools. We dismantle and reassemble wardrobes, secure the load and carry up to the fourth floor too. We are liable for your goods under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre; additional insurance for very valuable items is available.
Liability by contract

What to base your decision on
Whether to do it yourself or hire a moving company for a private move comes down to a few questions. These six help you decide. Answer them honestly, and the choice often becomes obvious – or a middle way does.
How heavy is the furniture?
Which floor, which lift?
Who is liable for damage?
How much time do you have?
What does it really cost?
What do you get back?
The middle way: a shared load

Weigh
up, compare, decide
This guide compares doing a private move yourself with hiring a moving company. How a professional move works step by step is shown in the article Private move: process and costs. If you are leaving the city, you will find tips under long-distance moves. If you move yourself, you will also find information there on deadlines that apply to every move – from giving notice to registering within two weeks.

Questions: move yourself or with a moving company?
What a moving company takes on in a private move
It starts with a free survey or video call. We record furniture, boxes, floor, lift and the route to the lorry and then give you a fixed price with all items. You set the date as soon as the handover and moving-in are clear; on request we apply for the parking restriction zone.
On moving day we bring the lorry, blankets, straps and tools, dismantle wardrobes and beds, secure everything in the load space and reassemble it in the new flat. You pack the boxes yourself or have them packed. We are liable for damage under § 451e HGB. What remains with you: notice, re-registering within two weeks and mail forwarding. If you hand over the physical work, you have time on moving day to hand over keys, note meter readings and look after the children – tasks that often get lost when you do it yourself.
Doing it yourself and a moving company compared on cost
Doing it yourself costs a hire van, fuel, materials and food for the helpers – and above all time. Then there is the risk: without a moving contract there is no liability under the German Commercial Code, and whether personal liability insurance steps in depends on the individual case. With heavy furniture, high floors and long carrying distances, doing it yourself quickly becomes more expensive than expected.
With a moving company you pay a fixed price, from which, for privately arranged moves, you can deduct 20% of the labour costs, up to a maximum of €4,000 a year, from your income tax (§ 35a EStG) – with an invoice and bank transfer. A middle way: pack yourself and have the furniture carried. That keeps the price lower, and the heavy items are still in safe hands. Be honest in your calculations either way: a hire van for two days, fuel, boxes, blankets and food for five helpers soon add up.
