Planning moving day around rush hour: timing traffic jams, buffer

Commuter guide, part 1
Moving day starts with the time – not with the first box
Start, route, buffer
Commuters know their route to work inside out – the route between the old and new flat often not. Yet on moving day the time of day matters: a lorry that is loaded in the middle of rush hour or has to cross the whole city can easily lose an hour. So plan the time slot first, then the helpers and finally the boxes. If you start early, you are often finished loading before the traffic builds up again in the afternoon.
Drive the route between both addresses once beforehand at the planned time – just as you know it from your commute. Look out for roadworks, school routes and delivery zones in front of the building. For the parking space in Berlin you need an order from the road traffic authority (Straßenverkehrsbehörde); processing there takes around four weeks. At Beste Umzug Unternehmen we discuss the start time and route during the survey and then give you a fixed price. Read more about the process under Private move.

Set the start time, then get a fixed price
Time slot and route are clarified during the survey
When you enquire, tell us your preferred time and the day you can take off work. We check the route, parking space and carrying distances and give you a fixed price after the survey. That way you know in advance when the van will arrive and roughly how long the day will take. You can reach us on 01625978461.

How we plan moving day around the traffic
Time slot, parking space, route
A move for commuters works when the day is not dictated by traffic. That is why we clarify beforehand when loading takes place, where the van stops and which route it takes. On request we apply for the no-parking zone (Halteverbotszone) and put up the signs in good time – in Berlin at least three full days beforehand. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21, Moabit) and drive within the city and nationwide. We give you the fixed price after the survey; your belongings are covered by liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB).

What matters on a moving day with little time
Commuters usually have exactly one day for the move. For it to be enough, the time, parking space and order must be fixed in advance. We discuss these points with you before the date is firmly booked.
Agreed start time
Checked route
Clear agreements
Time buffer
Flexible order
Care when carrying
Part load: your belongings travel on a planned tour
If you are only moving a few pieces of furniture and boxes, you can save with a part load (Beiladung): your things travel together with other jobs. Because the tour has several stops, there is a time window instead of a fixed time – plan to work from home that day.

Three
questions that shape moving day
For commuters, moving day is usually the only day off the move gets. Three questions decide whether it is enough: when does the van start, where can it stop, and what is needed first? If you adapt the start time to the traffic, secure the parking space in advance and have a clear loading order, you will be settled in by the evening. If you are moving to another city for a new job, the travel time is added – more on this under Long-distance moves.

Frequently asked questions about timing, traffic and moving day
Time first: when the removal van should set off
The best time for moving day depends on your route. Commuters can use their experience: when is the route between the old and new flat clear, and when does it get congested? In many cities an early start in the morning works well, because the boxes are in the van before the traffic increases in the afternoon. A move during the week can also be more relaxed than on a Saturday, when many other people are moving.
Check the buildings themselves too: are there quiet hours in the house rules, a lift that has to be reserved, or an entrance that is blocked by delivery vans in the morning? These points determine the time slot more precisely than any rule of thumb.
Plan a buffer for traffic jams and delays
Even well-planned moves get delayed – by a traffic jam, roadworks or a key handover that takes longer. So plan a reserve between loading and unloading and do not make any appointments on the evening of moving day. If you have to work again the next morning, have the bed assembled first.
As for the parking space: in Berlin you apply for the no-parking zone at the district road traffic authority; processing takes around four weeks, and the signs must be up at least three full days beforehand. More on this in the article Applying for a no-parking zone.
Moving costs at a glance
Moving costs vary greatly depending on flat size and distance. As a rough guide: 1-room flat from €349, 2-room flat from €589, 3-room flat from €879, 4-room flat from €1,309. Larger properties such as houses or villas receive an individual quote. For long-distance moves an additional €3.90/km is calculated. For exact figures we recommend a free survey.
What determines the price and duration of moving day
- Volume of belongings
- Distance (from €3.90/km)
- Floor and lift use
- No-parking zone
- Part load as an option
