You can recognise a reputable moving company first by details that can be checked: an imprint (Impressum) with a full address, a phone number that is answered and reviews on independent platforms. Then there is the approach to the quote: reputable firms get a picture beforehand – through a survey, photos or a video call – and only then give a fixed price. The quote is in writing and states the services, date and method of payment. If these basics are missing, caution is advised.
Another good sign is how openly a company talks about liability. Under § 451e HGB a moving company is liable for damage to belongings at €620 per cubic metre; towards consumers it must point out the liability rules and the option of additional insurance (§ 451g HGB). A firm that only advertises "insurance" in general terms without stating the conditions says very little. Customer reviews complete the picture – look for detailed accounts rather than just stars.

Recognising warning signs of dubious moving firms
A clear warning sign is a demand for a large prepayment in cash or without a written contract. Very low flat rates without a prior inventory are just as suspicious, as additional charges on moving day often follow. If a firm dodges questions about liability or only refers to "insurance" without explaining it further, you should be on your guard.
Verbal agreements without written confirmation are also a risk, because evidence is missing in the event of a dispute. Reputable providers talk openly about the scope of services, costs and liability and respond calmly to critical questions.
Checklist: how to find a trustworthy moving company
Before commissioning a firm, check the imprint and the reviews on independent platforms. An inventory beforehand and a written quote with a fixed price listing all services separately are further important criteria. Membership of a trade association can be an additional indication, but it does not replace this check.
Ask specifically about liability: by law it is €620 per cubic metre (§ 451e HGB); for expensive items, additional insurance is worthwhile. Get the conditions in writing. Ticking off these points considerably reduces the risk of unpleasant surprises.
