Packing in winter

Packed dry through your winter move

Keep out the wet, beat the frost

Unsere Firma Boxes, film, liquids and Christmas decorations: how to pack your household goods for cold, snow and sleet.

In winter, packaging has to do more than in summer: it must protect against knocks, against snow and sleet on the way to the van, and against the moisture that forms when cold items are brought into the warm. A soaked box tears, and wet books warp. On request, Beste Umzug Unternehmen brings sturdy boxes and blankets and packs for you as part of the packing service. You can find more about our services under Private move.

Frost-sensitive items such as emulsion paint, drinks in glass bottles, cleaning products or cosmetics do not belong in the cold cargo space on a winter move, but in your car or in the flat that is cleared last. We give you the fixed price after the survey. Your goods are covered by liability under the HGB; however, liability is excluded for damage caused by inadequate packing on your part. Call us on 01625978461.

How we pack for winter

Sturdy, dry, labelled

We wrap furniture in blankets rather than airtight film so that no moisture builds up underneath, and we use sturdy boxes that can survive a walk through sleet. Fragile items are padded individually. During the survey we clarify what is sensitive to frost. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21), give you the fixed price after the survey and are liable under the HGB.

Packing service

With our packing service we pack crockery, glasses and books in sturdy boxes and pad them so that they survive cold, knocks and a few snowflakes.

Office move

Files and paper are sensitive to moisture. For an office move in winter we use closed boxes or crates and never load them open in the sleet.

Senior moves

For a senior move we pack keepsakes, photo albums and medication separately and keep them dry – important items go in your own luggage.

Furniture transport

For furniture transport we wrap wooden and upholstered furniture in blankets; this keeps surfaces dry and lets condensation evaporate.
CAREFULLY PACKED

Our packing rules for winter

Good packaging is the best protection on a winter move: sturdy against knocks, tight against moisture and airy enough for damp to dry off. We follow these rules with every box.

01

Sturdy boxes

Double-walled moving boxes hold up even if they get damp for a short time. Heavy items such as books go into small boxes so that the bottom does not give way during the move.
02

Blankets instead of film

Airtight film placed directly on wood can trap condensation. Blankets protect furniture and let moisture escape during the move.
03

Frost-sensitive items separate

Paint, drinks, cleaning products and cosmetics go into a separate crate that travels in the warm car rather than in the cold cargo space.
04

Fragile items padded

Glasses, china and Christmas baubles are wrapped individually in paper and stood upright. We fill gaps so that nothing rattles during the move.
05

Clearly labelled

Room, contents and "Fragile" are written on two sides of the box – important when it gets dark early in winter and things need to be sorted quickly.
06

Unpack while dry

At the destination we unpack damp boxes first so that books and textiles can dry before mildew spots form.
SMALL LOADS IN WINTER

Part load: well packed on tour

Save on small loads

For a few pieces of furniture and boxes, a part load is an affordable choice. Because your goods are loaded and unloaded more often, good packing is especially important in winter: sturdy boxes, blankets instead of film and clear labelling.

PACKING & WEATHER

Packing
for your winter move

So that you can relax

This part of the winter series is about packing: which boxes hold up in the wet, why blankets are better than film, which liquids cannot take frost and how Christmas decorations arrive intact. Packing well saves time on moving day and protects your household goods. It also pays off on long-distance moves with a long journey in a cold cargo space. You can find more information under Long-distance moves.

Materials and boxes

Double-walled boxes, blankets, packing paper and tape: with the right materials, your private move, senior move or student move in winter stays dry and breakage-proof – even in sleet.

Frost-sensitive items

With our packing service we set aside paint, drinks and cleaning products; they travel in the car rather than with the furniture transport. The same applies to a small transport: whatever must not freeze stays warm.

Decorations and fragile items

Whether Christmas baubles or glasses – for an office move, company relocation, part load or furniture taxi, we pad fragile items individually and stand them upright in small boxes.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about packing for a winter move

Answers on boxes, moisture, liquids, Christmas decorations and electronics.
The best choice is sturdy, double-walled moving boxes that can get damp for a short time without tearing. Tape the bottom crosswise and pack heavy items such as books in small boxes. In sleet, plastic crates help for papers and textiles. Do not leave boxes standing open in the snow; carry them to the van promptly. That way your household goods get through the winter move dry.

Protecting boxes and furniture from moisture

Snow and sleet are the biggest risk for cardboard: damp boxes lose their strength and tear when carried. Use sturdy, double-walled boxes and pack heavy items in small boxes.

Wrap furniture in blankets rather than airtight film so that no moisture builds up underneath. Unpack damp boxes first at the destination. More tips in the article Packing fragile items safely.

What must not freeze: liquids and decorations

Water-based emulsion paints, drinks in glass bottles, cleaning products and some cosmetics cannot take frost: paint becomes unusable and bottles can burst. Pack these items in a separate crate that travels in the warm car.

Wrap Christmas baubles and glass decorations individually in paper and place them in egg boxes or compartments. Roll up fairy lights and put them in bags.
