Moving budget as a student: what BAföG covers and what it does not

Money and moving
The move costs more than the transport
Plan realistically
When planning, most people only think about the transport. Other items often turn out more expensive: the deposit for the new room, a few days of double rent, the parking restriction, boxes and the first furnishings. BAföG has no separate allowance for moving costs; for students who do not live with their parents, it includes a housing allowance of currently €380 a month (§ 13 (2) BAföG). We give you the transport for your student move as a fixed price after the survey.
A few things ease the budget: you may pay the deposit in three monthly instalments (§ 551 BGB), with BAföG you can be exempted from the broadcasting fee, and if you give notice early, you do not pay two rents. For the housing allowance, the amount currently in force applies (§ 13(2) BAföG). We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21); information on our student move.

Plan the transport as a fixed item
Survey, fixed price, no estimate
In your cost plan, the transport should not remain an estimate. Call us on 01625978461: we survey your room and then give you a fixed price that states what is included – then you can plan the rest of your budget properly.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

Why a fixed price helps on a small budget
One less item to estimate
On a tight budget, an extra charge on moving day is the worst thing that can happen. That is why we survey beforehand, write down what is coming along and which services are included, and then give you a fixed price. You can save by packing yourself, sorting things out beforehand and dismantling furniture yourself. For transport damage, we are liable under the HGB (§ 451e: €620 per m³). We are based in Berlin-Moabit; on Google we are rated 5.0 from 119 reviews.

Part load as the cheapest option
For many students, a part load is the biggest lever in the moving budget: several jobs share one vehicle, and you only pay for your space. That saves a lot, especially over a long distance. In return, the delivery date is a time window – so plan for a few days' overlap between your tenancy agreements.

What
a student move really costs
This part is about money: which costs arise on a student move, which of them BAföG covers and which it does not, and where you can really save. You will find hidden items that are often forgotten in the article Spotting hidden moving costs, and on tax in the article Deducting moving costs from tax.

Frequently asked questions about costs and budget for a student move
The right preparation: cost plan and checklist
A student move starts with two lists: a checklist and a cost plan. The checklist includes the notice period, the appointment at the citizens' office (Bürgeramt) and boxes; the cost plan includes transport, deposit, a few days of double rent and the parking restriction. If you plan early, you can fit dates around your timetable and exam period.
Preparation also includes choosing the moving company. Look for a fixed price after a survey and clear information on liability – by law it is up to €620 per m³ of removal goods (§ 451e HGB), more only with additional insurance.
Saving on moving costs as a student: practical tips
You save the most on volume: anything you sell or give away beforehand does not need to be transported. If you pack yourself and dismantle the furniture, additional services are not needed; with few household goods over a long distance, a part load is often cheaper than a transport of your own. Also avoid the most popular days at the end of the month.
A few rules help with the additional costs: you can pay the new deposit in three instalments, apply for an exemption from the broadcasting fee with BAföG, and first furnishings can often be had second-hand for little money. That way, despite a small budget, enough is left for the first few weeks in your new place.
Price overview for the transport
Our moving service offers clear prices: 1-room flats from €354, 2-room flats from €609, 3-room flats from €894 and 4-room flats from €1,309. Larger properties such as a house or a villa always receive an individual quote. For long-distance moves we charge from €4.25/km. For a tailor-made quote, we recommend a free survey.
What goes into the moving costs
The moving costs include, among other things, the volume, the distance (from €4.25/km) and the floor with or without a lift. A parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) can also cause additional costs. Supplementary services such as furniture assembly or a part load are also possible.
