The Right Moving Date for Families with School-Age Children

Choosing a date with children
When the move fits the school year
Smartly timed
For a family move with school-age children, a lot depends on the date. If you move in the summer holidays, your child can start the new school year in a newly formed class. The mid-year changeover is the second-best choice; a move in the middle of the school year is possible too, but needs more support. Once your preferred date is set, arrange a survey for the private move; afterwards we give you the fixed price. We answer questions on 01625978461.
Besides the school holidays, the notice period for the old flat, both parents' leave and, for younger siblings, settling in at nursery all count. If the new flat is not yet available, storage bridges the gap. Your belongings are covered by liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB), and additional insurance is available on request. The sooner the date is fixed, the easier it is to arrange school, nursery and work around it.

How we plan your date
The school calendar meets the moving plan
A family move has to fit into a full calendar: holidays, report day, notice period, leave. During the survey we discuss which day is suitable and how long the move will take, so that you can plan childcare and leave. We give you the fixed price afterwards, and we are liable for transport damage under the German Commercial Code (HGB). We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and operate nationwide – destinations with their own page under Locations.

Six questions for choosing the moving date
There is rarely a perfect date, but there is a suitable one. Go through these six questions before you fix the day for your family move – and note which of them matters most to your family.
When are the holidays?
When does the tenancy end?
Who has leave?
What is coming up at school?
Settling in at nursery?
Holiday traffic?
Part load with a flexible date
If you are flexible about the date, you can have individual pieces of furniture or the household goods of a second home transported as a part load: your goods travel on an existing route. For the main move at the start of the holidays, a dedicated date is usually the better choice.

School
year, tenancy, leave
The last part of the series answers a question that comes at the start of every family move: when do we move? We compare the summer holidays, the mid-year changeover and a move in the middle of the school year, and show how the notice period, parents' leave and settling in at nursery play a part. General tips on choosing the date can be found in the article Choosing the right moving date, and tips for long distances under long-distance moves.

Questions about the moving date with school-age children
Summer holidays, mid-year or the middle of the school year?
For school-age children, a move in the summer holidays is usually the easiest: the new school year starts at the new place, classes are often newly formed, and no school days are missed. Bear in mind that each federal state sets its own holidays – if the family moves across state borders, the holidays at the old and new place may overlap or fall at different times.
The second-best choice is the mid-year changeover after the report. A move in the middle of the school year is possible; compulsory schooling then applies immediately at the new place. For moving day itself, you can apply to the school for leave of absence.
Factoring in the tenancy, leave and nursery
As a tenant, you give notice with a three-month period to the end of the month (§ 573c BGB). Plan a few days of overlap between the old and new flat so that renovation and handover do not fall on moving day. There is no statutory entitlement to special leave for a private move – whether you get a day off is governed by your collective agreement or employment contract.
If you have younger children, expect a few weeks of settling in at the new nursery, often with a parent. More on this in the article Moving in the summer holidays.
What does the move cost? Prices at a glance
In brief: 1-room flats cost from €369, 2-room flats from €584, 3-room flats from €879 and 4-room flats from €1,329. For a house or villa you always receive an individual quote, tailored to your specific situation. For a long-distance move the price is from €3.95 per kilometre. We give you the fixed price after a free survey – arrange it as soon as your preferred date is set.
What determines the moving price
First of all, the volume counts – the more household goods, the greater the effort. The distance is charged from €3.95/km. The floor and lift also play a role, as does a possible no-parking zone (in Berlin: apply about 2–4 weeks beforehand). We are happy to add furniture assembly or a part load.
Services around your date
Once the date is set, we plan the right services:
- Move with assembly – an all-round package with furniture assembly.
- Private move – your way to your new home.
- Furniture transport – transport of individual pieces of furniture.
- Part load – affordable transport, cleverly combined.
- House clearance – fast clearance and disposal.
- Office relocation – tailor-made solutions for businesses.
Long-distance move: holidays in two federal states
With a long-distance move to another federal state, different holidays apply at the new place – check both calendars. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and operate nationwide: destinations in the locations overview, the process under Long-distance moves.
