Large appliances in winter

Water out, bolts in: appliances in winter

No frost in the appliance

Unsere Firma Washing machine, dishwasher, fridge and bean-to-cup coffee machine: how every appliance survives transport in frost.

On a winter move, appliances that carry water are the underestimated risk. After the last wash, residual water remains in a washing machine's drain pump, hoses and seals. If the appliance stands in the cold cargo space for several hours, this water can freeze and damage the pump or hoses. The same applies to dishwashers and bean-to-cup coffee machines. That is why our team at Beste Umzug Unternehmen asks during the survey which large appliances are coming along.

Plan the preparation for the day before: drain the washing machine via the lint filter, disconnect the hoses and let them run dry, and refit the transport bolts. Switch the fridge off in good time, defrost it and wipe it dry. On request we handle disconnection and connection as part of a move with assembly. We give you the fixed price after the survey, whether for a private move or a long-distance move. Your belongings are covered under the German Commercial Code (HGB).

How we transport large appliances

Secured and upright

Large appliances are heavy and delicate inside – on a winter move the cold is added to that. We carry washing machines and fridges with straps and a sack truck, secure them upright in the van and load them so that they do not stand in the cold for longer than necessary. Beforehand we clarify with you whether the transport bolts are available and who disconnects the appliances. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21), give you the fixed price after the survey and are liable under the HGB (€620 per m³); additional insurance is available on request.

Packing service

We pack fridge compartments, glass shelves and accessories individually so that with our packing service nothing slides around inside the appliance or cracks in the cold.

Office move

During an office move, the kitchenette, coffee machine and water dispenser are drained and secured so that no appliance fails with frost damage after the move.

Senior moves

With a senior move, on request we connect the washing machine and fridge at the new place so that the household is quickly up and running again.

Furniture transport

We transport large appliances upright and secured against tipping – during furniture transport in winter with blankets against scratches and moisture.

What we look out for with large appliances

Washing machine, dishwasher or freezer: every large appliance has its own weak points on a winter move – residual water, refrigerant, glass shelves. We go through the preparation with you in advance, secure the appliances in the van and set them up at the new place so that they start safely after the waiting time.

01

Preparation agreed

You receive a short list in advance: drain the washing machine, defrost the fridge, descale and empty the coffee machine – then the move runs without surprises.
02

Transport bolts

Without transport bolts, a washing machine's drum can knock about during the move. If they are missing, get suitable bolts from the manufacturer.
03

Loaded upright

We transport fridges and freezers upright wherever possible. If an appliance has to lie down, note the longer standing time after the move.
04

Briefly in the cold

We load large appliances so that they get back into the warm quickly at the destination. The shorter they stand in the cold van, the lower the risk of frost.
05

Dry floors

If residual water does drip, blankets and floor protection catch it. In the stairwell we lay runners so that snow and wet do not become a slipping hazard.
06

Connection at the new place

On request we connect the washing machine and dishwasher. Only start the first wash once the appliance has reached room temperature.

The low-cost alternative

For a single large appliance, a part load is often worthwhile. Because the appliance may be on the road for longer, preparation is particularly important in winter: drain all residual water, dry the hoses, fit the transport bolts and secure the doors against springing open.

large appliances in winter

One team, every service

This part of our winter series is about the appliances that contain water or refrigerant: washing machine, tumble dryer, dishwasher, fridge and freezer, bean-to-cup coffee machine. At sub-zero temperatures, residual water can freeze in pumps and hoses, and refrigeration appliances need a standing time after transport before they run again. We show what to do the day before, how the appliances are transported and when to switch them back on. That way your private move or long-distance move in winter succeeds without a broken pump.

Preparing the day before

Drain the washing machine, defrost the fridge, use up frozen food: with a plan for the day before, your private move, senior move or student move in winter is relaxed – and no appliance freezes up.

Carrying and securing

With a packing service, upright furniture transport and flexible small removals, large appliances arrive secured. Straps and blankets protect the appliance, the stairwell and the carriers even in the wet.

Reconnecting

For an office move or company relocation, the same applies to the kitchenette and fridge as at home: warm up first, then switch on. For a part load or furniture taxi for individual appliances we quote a fixed price.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about household appliances on a winter move

Answers on residual water, transport bolts, fridge standing time and costs.
A winter move is perfectly feasible and even has advantages such as lower demand and cheaper dates. With good planning and enough helpers, risks from cold and ice can be kept to a minimum. What matters is booking a removal company early that is prepared for wintry conditions and offers appropriate protective measures.

Making the washing machine and dishwasher frost-safe

Appliances that carry water are particularly at risk on a winter move, because residual water in the drain pump, hoses and seals freezes and expands in frost. Drain the washing machine the day before via the lint filter or the emergency drain hose, disconnect the inlet and outlet hoses and let both run dry. Then fit the transport bolts so that the drum does not knock about. The same applies to the dishwasher: clean the filter, soak up the residual water in the sump, drain the hoses.

At the new place the appliances should be at room temperature before they run for the first time. We explain this step by step in the article Transporting a washing machine.

Fridge, freezer and bean-to-cup coffee machine in winter

Switch the fridge and freezer off in good time before the move, defrost and wipe them dry – otherwise the meltwater freezes solid in the cold van. Ideally use up frozen food beforehand. Transport the appliance upright wherever possible and secure the doors and glass shelves.

After transport the appliance needs a standing time before the compressor may start again; how long is stated in the operating instructions. In frost, the warm-up time is added. For the coffee machine, empty the water tank and pipes according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Price overview for your next move

Anyone moving wants to know what to expect: we move a 1-room flat from as little as €339, a 2-room flat from €589, a 3-room flat from €915 and a 4-room flat from €1,279. For houses and villas we prepare an individual quote, as every move is different here. If a long-distance move is coming up, we calculate from €4.20/km. It is best to have a personal quote prepared as part of a free survey.

Moving costs with large appliances

With every move, volume and distance (from €4.20/km) play the biggest role. But the floor, lift and a parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) also have an effect. For more flexibility we offer furniture assembly and a part load.
