Furniture for Your First Flat: Measuring Choosing and Transporting Safely

First furnishings
First the floor plan, then the furniture
Does everything fit?
Your first flat of your own is rarely as big as you imagined. Before you buy furniture or take it from your parents' home, an evening with a folding rule is worthwhile: room dimensions, window sills, radiators, door widths and the width of the stairwell. With these figures you can quickly see whether your old single bed will do or whether the new sofa will even get through the door. We help with your private move with dismantling, transport and assembly – details under Private move.
Also plan for delivery times: new furniture from a furniture store often only arrives weeks after purchase, and you have to collect second-hand pieces yourself. We can combine several collection addresses into one tour and dismantle large items on site. We give you the fixed price after the survey; your goods are covered by liability under the HGB, and additional insurance is possible. Find out about the process under Private move.

Several collection points, one fixed price
When you enquire, tell us which furniture is coming from where – your parents' home, classified ads, a furniture store. From this we plan the route and the effort and give you a fixed price for moving into your first home after the survey. Call us without obligation on 01625978461.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

How we move your first furniture
From your childhood bedroom to your own flat
When moving into a first home, the furniture often comes from three directions: from your childhood bedroom, from the second-hand market and new from the furniture store. On request we collect it from several addresses, dismantle large pieces and reassemble them in the new flat. Beforehand we check whether the sofa and wardrobe fit through the stairwell and doors. Your goods are covered by liability under the HGB, with additional insurance on request. We are based in Berlin, Stromstraße 21.

Furniture,
dimensions, transport
Many first-time tenants move for training, studies or their first job – and start with a mix of brought-along, second-hand and new furniture. This part of the series is about clarifying the floor plan and dimensions before buying, and planning the transport so that nothing gets stuck in the stairwell. If the new flat is further away, you can find more under Long-distance moves.

Frequently asked questions about furniture and transport when moving into your first home
Preparing with a folding rule and floor plan
Your first move of your own ideally starts six to eight weeks before the date with a checklist – and, for furnishing, with a floor plan. Measure all the rooms at the viewing or at the latest at the key handover, together with door widths, the stairwell and, if applicable, the lift car. Whether a large sofa or a wardrobe fits through a narrow staircase is covered in the article Furniture through a narrow stairwell. Reserve your moving date early, as the ends of months are quickly booked up.
Formalities run in parallel: registration with the registration authority must take place within two weeks of moving in. In Berlin you apply for a parking restriction zone at the district office (Bezirksamt) two to four weeks beforehand; the signs must be up at least 72 hours in advance. We take care of the application on request.
Furniture and equipment for your first flat
When furnishing your first flat of your own, it makes sense to start with the basic furniture and expand bit by bit. A bed, wardrobe and a functional dining area should have priority, while decorative elements can be added later. When buying furniture, keep the dimensions of your new flat in mind to avoid disappointment later. Our team is happy to help you with professional transport and assembly on site.
For transporting delicate or bulky pieces of furniture, we recommend special packing material such as bubble wrap and sturdy moving boxes. Especially as a first-time tenant, it is worth investing in high-quality packaging to avoid damage. With us your goods are covered by liability under the HGB; additional insurance is possible for new, expensive pieces. Contact us for individual advice on your specific furniture transport.
What transporting your furniture costs
The cost of a move depends first and foremost on the size of the flat. For a 1-room flat we charge from €354, for a 2-room flat from €584. For a 3-room flat the price is from €905, for a 4-room flat from €1,289. Houses and villas have to be considered individually, which is why we always prepare an individual quote for them. If you are moving further away, long-distance moves cost from €4.25 per kilometre. The calculation is most accurate after a free survey.
Why bulky furniture changes the price
A large volume and a long distance (from €4.25/km) push the price up. High floors without a lift and a required parking restriction zone also add to it. Additional services such as furniture assembly and part load also affect the final amount.
