Planning a senior move: a timetable from the decision to moving in

Senior move part 1
A timetable that gives older people peace of mind
Step by step
A senior move rarely fails because of the furniture, but because of too little time. Anyone moving at 75 or 85 needs breaks, conversations with the family and room for decisions about keepsakes. That is why at Beste Umzug Unternehmen we plan backwards from moving-in day: when does notice have to be given, when is sorting done, when does the survey take place? What we take care of is described on our page about the private move.
The most important date is often three months before the move: the statutory notice period for tenants ends at the end of the month after next (§ 573c BGB). Then come sorting, the survey and the no-parking zone, and after moving in, registration at the registration office (Bürgeramt) within two weeks. We give you the fixed price after the survey, and transport is carried out with liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB). That way everyone in the family knows what needs to be done and when.

Fixed price after a survey, timetable included
Call us on 01625978461 and arrange a free survey. You will then receive a fixed price and a timetable that works backwards from moving-in day: notice, sorting, no-parking zone, packing days. Relatives can be present at the appointment or join by phone.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

How we draw up the timetable with you
Planned backwards from moving-in day
It all starts with a conversation, ideally together with children or other relatives. We clarify when the old flat has to be vacated, when the new one is ready to move into and how many household goods are coming along. From this we create a timetable with dates for sorting, packing, dismantling and assembly. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21), carry out the transport at a fixed price after a survey and are liable under the German Commercial Code (HGB); additional insurance is possible on request.

The timeline in six stages
A senior move can be divided into manageable stages. Each has its own point in time – so only a handful of tasks remain each week, even for older people with no help at home.

What
belongs in which week
A senior move involves tasks that depend on each other: only once the moving-in date is fixed can notice be given; only once it is clear what is coming along can the size of the lorry be planned. In this first part we put the steps in chronological order – from giving notice and sorting to registering at the new address. The further parts of the series go into individual topics in more depth, such as choosing furniture, accessibility and costs.

Frequently asked questions about the timetable for a senior move
Twelve weeks before: giving notice and first decisions
For a move in old age, eight to ten weeks' lead time is the minimum; twelve is better. The reason is the notice period: tenants give notice no later than the third working day of a month, to take effect at the end of the month after next (§ 573c BGB) – that is, with almost three months' lead time. During this time you can measure the new flat, get quotes and fix the moving date. If you book early, you are more likely to get a weekday outside the end of the month.
Together with relatives, draw up a list of all deadlines: notice, handover of the old flat, registration at the registration office (Bürgeramt) within two weeks of moving in. Add doctors, the care service, the pension insurance and the health insurance fund. Whether your destination has its own page with us can be seen in the locations overview; our vehicles always start in Berlin.
Accessibility and safety in the new flat
When choosing the new flat or retirement residence, accessibility should be the top priority, so that you can live safely and independently in the long term. Look for step-free access, doors wide enough for a possible wheelchair or rollator, and non-slip floor coverings. A bathroom with grab rails and a level-access shower also considerably increases safety in everyday life.
Plan before the move how furniture can best be positioned to avoid trip hazards and ensure enough freedom of movement. Our team will be happy to help you with a well-thought-out set-up in the new flat. For longer distances, we also recommend a look at our long-distance moves page for special requirements.
