Protecting Wooden Furniture Leather and Pianos on a Winter Move

Furniture in winter
Wood and leather safely through the cold
Let it warm up slowly
Cold on its own rarely harms a piece of furniture. The change is what is dangerous: a cold wardrobe brought into a warm flat steams up, and dry heated air then draws moisture out of the wood. Solid wood and veneer can then move, and joints open up. At Beste Umzug Unternehmen we therefore wrap sensitive pieces in blankets, keep the routes through the cold short and do not place them right next to the radiator at the destination. We give you the fixed price after the survey.
Pianos, leather sofas, high-gloss fronts and antique furniture are particularly delicate. A piano is happiest at a steady 50 to 60% relative humidity; below 40% the wood dries out badly. Mention such pieces during the survey and we will plan padding and carrying routes accordingly. For the whole process of your private move: your goods are covered by liability under the HGB, and additional insurance is available on request.

How we handle wood and leather in winter
Blankets instead of film
In winter we wrap sensitive furniture in blankets rather than airtight film so that no moisture builds up underneath. We carry heavy pieces quickly from the house to the van so that they do not stand in the cold for long. At the destination the blankets stay on at first until the furniture has adjusted to room temperature – so the fabric steams up rather than the lacquered surface. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and operate nationwide. Your goods are covered by liability under the HGB.

What we pay attention to with sensitive furniture
Wood, leather and lacquer do not like rapid changes between frost, moisture and dry heated air. With blankets, short routes and a calm warm-up phase, your furniture arrives undamaged in your new home.

Part load for individual pieces of furniture
For a chest of drawers, an armchair or a few boxes, a part load is an affordable solution. In winter we wrap sensitive wood and leather pieces in blankets and agree a time window so that the furniture does not wait long in the cold at the destination.

Moving
sensitive furniture in winter
The ninth part of our winter series is about materials that react to temperature and humidity: solid wood, veneer, high-gloss lacquer, leather and instruments. Outside the air is damp and cold, inside it is dry and warm – and it is exactly this change that affects them. We show you how to pack such pieces, how long they should acclimatise and where they should stand in the new flat. This applies especially to a long-distance move with a long journey.

Frequently asked questions about sensitive furniture in winter
Why wood moves in winter
Wood absorbs moisture from the air and releases it again. In winter, during a move, a piece of furniture goes within a few hours from dry heated air to damp cold and back into dry warmth. When a cold wardrobe comes into a warm room, condensation first forms on the surface; then the heated air dries out the wood. Veneer can come loose, solid wood can crack and drawers can stick.
So wrap sensitive pieces in furniture blankets rather than film and only remove the blankets once the furniture has reached room temperature. Place it at a distance from radiators and outside walls. You will find further tips for old pieces in the article transporting antique furniture.
Pianos, leather and high gloss in frost
A piano reacts particularly strongly to the indoor climate: a steady 50 to 60% relative humidity is ideal; below 40% the wood dries out badly, tuning pins can loosen and the soundboard can crack. After a winter move the instrument therefore needs rest; you should only have it tuned after a few weeks in its new place. Our piano transport service handles the move itself.
Leather becomes stiff in the cold and can crack at folds, so carry sofas flat and pack cushions separately. High-gloss and lacquered fronts steam up very visibly – let them warm up while still wrapped and only wipe off moisture with a soft cloth.

What determines the effort for sensitive furniture
Important criteria are the moving volume, the distance (from €4.20/km) and the floor with or without a lift. A reserved parking restriction zone ensures that everything runs smoothly. If needed, we add furniture assembly or a part load to the move.
