Registering in your university town: main residence second-home tax and broadcasting fee

After moving in
Register, re-register, notify
Paperwork under control
The transport is done in a day; the formalities take longer. If you move to study, you must register with the registration authority within two weeks of moving in (§ 17 BMG) – even if your parents' home remains as an address. In doing so, you decide whether the new room is your main or secondary residence. For your student move, we handle the transport at a fixed price after a survey, so you have time for these appointments.
By law, your main residence is the flat you predominantly use (§ 21 BMG). If you live in your university town during the week, your main residence is usually there. Incidentally, you must also register a secondary residence. To register, you need your ID and the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung). We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and also drive to other university cities.

Book the move, gain time for the authorities
Survey, fixed price, fixed date
Once your moving day is fixed, you can book your appointment at the citizens' office (Bürgeramt) for the two weeks that follow. Call us on 01625978461: we survey your room, then give you a fixed price and confirm the moving date bindingly.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

What we take off your hands around the formalities
Transport fixed, mind clear
Nobody can register at the citizens' office for you, but we can take care of the rest. On request, we apply for the parking restriction zone, dismantle and reassemble furniture and bring everything to your new room in one appointment. A tip from experience: do not pack your ID, tenancy agreement and landlord confirmation into a moving box – put them in your rucksack. For transport damage, we are liable under the HGB (§ 451e: €620 per m³). We are based in Berlin-Moabit; on Google we are rated 5.0 from 119 reviews.

Six places that need your new address
After a student move, the citizens' office is only the beginning. You should inform these six places in the first few weeks – the order saves duplicate trips.
Bürgeramt
University
BAföG office
Broadcasting fee
City treasury
Health insurance and bank
Using a part load to reach your new registered address
If you are moving to another city with only a little furniture, a part load can be cheaper: your belongings travel along with other jobs. Plan for a delivery window – and only book your appointment at the citizens' office for the days when you are sure to have moved in.

Registration
law for students in brief
This part covers the trips to the authorities that are often underestimated on a student move: registering in your university town, the question of main or secondary residence, the second-home tax some cities charge and the broadcasting fee in shared flats and halls of residence. You can read more on the deadline and documents in the article Re-registering after the move.

Frequently asked questions about registration and residence while studying
Registration and official steps in your university town
After moving into your new flat, you must register with the registration authority within two weeks (§ 17 BMG) – in Berlin at any citizens' office, with an appointment via service.berlin.de. You must bring your ID and the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) from your landlord. You cannot register before moving in, but you can book the appointment in advance.
If you also keep a room at your parents' home, you must decide which flat is your main residence: it is the one you predominantly use (§ 21 BMG). If the student room is only a secondary residence, some cities levy a second-home tax. Afterwards, you inform your university, the BAföG office, your health insurance fund and your bank; a mail forwarding order from Deutsche Post (6 months for private customers) helps during the transition.
Furniture and boxes: moving on a small budget
Second-hand furniture from classified ads or bulky-waste collections can often be smartened up with little effort and saves real money. When getting moving boxes, it is also worth checking local supermarkets or Facebook groups, which often give boxes away for free. If you plan cleverly, you rarely need more than 15 to 20 boxes for a typical student move.
For bulky single items such as a desk or bed, we recommend our furniture transport, which covers the professional transport of individual pieces of furniture. That way your budget is spared while heavy and awkward items are transported safely.
What a move with us costs
Our prices are fair and transparent. For a 1-room flat we charge from €369, for a 2-room flat from €609. Larger moves, such as a 3-room flat, start from €905, a 4-room flat from €1,324. For a house or villa, we will of course prepare an individual quote to suit your requirements. If you are planning a long-distance move, a per-kilometre price from €3.95 applies. Feel free to arrange a free survey to clarify all the details.
Why every move costs something different
Every move is different – what matters is the volume of the household and the distance from €3.95/km. The floor, a missing lift and a parking restriction zone that has to be set up (Halteverbotszone) are also reflected in the price. Additional services such as furniture assembly and a part load round off the offer.
