AUTHORITIES AFTER THE MOVE

After moving in

Re-registering the whole family correctly

Deadlines in view

Unsere Firma Re-registering the family: citizens' office within 14 days, consent of those with parental responsibility, family benefits office, health insurer, school and nursery.

After a family move, you register with the registration office within two weeks (§ 17 BMG) – all family members, including the children. For children under 16, the person responsible is whoever takes them into their home, which is usually the parents. We take care of the transport so that you have time for the appointment; details under Private move. We give you the fixed price after the survey.

Besides the citizens' office (Bürgeramt), other bodies need the new address: the family benefits office (Familienkasse), the health insurer, the school or nursery, the employer and the paediatrician. If you write the list in advance, you can get a lot done in one week. We pack, transport and assemble furniture; your belongings are covered by liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB), and additional insurance is available on request. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and operate nationwide – destinations under Locations.

TAKING THE LOAD OFF

How we take the load off you after the move

Transport from us, appointments from you

We cannot do the re-registration for you, but we can free up the time for it. We pack, carry and assemble while you book the appointment at the citizens' office and obtain the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) from your landlord. We give you the fixed price after the survey; your belongings are covered by liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB). ID documents, birth certificates and tenancy papers are best transported yourself, separately from the belongings.

Packing service

While we pack, you collect ID documents, birth certificates and the landlord confirmation in a folder that does not go into the lorry.

Assembly service

We assemble beds and wardrobes so that in the first week you have time for the citizens' office, the family benefits office and the school.

No-parking zone

On request we submit the application to the district office (Bezirksamt); in Berlin the signs must be up at least 72 hours before moving day.

Furniture transport

We pack files containing contracts and school reports securely; however, § 451d HGB excludes liability for documents, so original documents are better kept in your own luggage.
WHO NEEDS THE ADDRESS?

Six places that should know about your move

Re-registering at the citizens' office is compulsory. Many other bodies, however, should receive the new address directly from you – for families, these six belong on the list.

01

Registration office

Registration within two weeks of moving in for all family members; if you miss the deadline, you risk a fine of up to €1,000 (§ 54 BMG).
02

Family benefits office

If you receive child benefit, you notify the family benefits office of changes (§ 68 EStG); report your new address there too so that post arrives.
03

Health insurer

Children are usually covered through a parent's family insurance; the health insurer needs the new address for cards and notices.
04

School and nursery

Deregister from the old institution and register with the new one – often with a registration certificate as proof of the new residential address.
05

Paediatrician

Find a new paediatrician and request medical records; the yellow U-Heft and the vaccination record stay with you in the document folder anyway.
06

Employer and contracts

Your employer, bank, insurers, the broadcasting licence fee and your electricity supplier need the new address; mail forwarding catches anything forgotten.
SECOND STAGE

Smaller quantities with a time window

Some families move in two stages: first the essentials, later the rest from the cellar or a second home. A part load is suitable for these smaller quantities and combines well with our long-distance moves.

RE-REGISTRATION

Citizens'
office, insurer and school

For the first two weeks

This part of the series covers re-registering the whole family: which deadline applies to registration, who registers the children, which documents the citizens' office wants to see and which other bodies need the new address. Preparation is particularly worthwhile for separated parents with joint custody. If you are moving to another federal state, you will find further information under Long-distance moves.

Registration

Two weeks after moving in, ID for every person, the landlord confirmation from the landlord – in Berlin also possible online as a family group if everyone was previously registered together.

Registering children

Children under 16 are registered by whoever takes them into their home; when a child moves, the citizens' office requires the consent of those with parental responsibility.

Other bodies

The family benefits office, health insurer, school, nursery, paediatrician and employer should receive the new address directly from you – ideally with a list to tick off.

FAQ

Questions about re-registering the family

Deadlines, documents and responsibilities after moving with children.
A family move works best with an early checklist that covers changing school, re-registrations and packing lists. Allow at least six to eight weeks' lead time and involve your children actively in the preparations. A professional private move service can also make organisational tasks easier and save time.

Re-registering children correctly: deadline and documents

Registration at the new place of residence is due within two weeks of moving in (§ 17 BMG); children under 16 are registered by the person whose home they move into. In Berlin you need proof of identity for each person, the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) – a tenancy agreement does not replace it – and, for minor children, the consent of those with parental responsibility.

For separated parents with joint custody, a form is required in Berlin, and registration is only possible in person. Missed deadlines can cost up to €1,000 (§ 54 BMG). More in the article Re-registering after the move.

Re-registering online and informing other bodies

In Berlin you can complete registration online, with a BundID account and an ID card with the online function. If everyone was previously registered together, one parent registers the family as a group; minors cannot register themselves online.

After that it is the turn of the family benefits office, health insurer, school or nursery, paediatrician and employer. During a private move, we assemble the furniture during this time so that the children's room is ready.
