Senior moves part 13

Moving to another city – well planned even at 80

A long way, calmly

Unsere Firma A flat near the children, assisted travel, doctors in the new town: the long-distance move in later life, planned without a rush.

Many older people eventually move to where their children or grandchildren live. Moving to another city then means more than a longer route for the lorry: the GP, neighbours and familiar shops are left behind, and the new surroundings feel strange at first. Preparing the long-distance move well takes much of the weight off the fresh start. On request, our team at Beste Umzug Unternehmen takes care of packing, transport and assembly so that seniors can make the journey in peace.

Most important of all, the lorry and the senior do not have to travel together. We load at the old flat, and relatives accompany the journey by train or car. For help getting on, changing and getting off trains, Deutsche Bahn's Mobility Service Centre (Mobilitätsservice-Zentrale) offers support; you should book by 8 pm the day before. Via our service page Private move you can add furniture assembly or storage. We quote the fixed price after the survey.

How we plan the long-distance move

From Berlin to the front door

At Beste Umzug Unternehmen we know that a long-distance move in old age requires a great deal of trust. That is why we plan with you and your relatives at the destination: who unlocks the new flat, where can the lorry stop, when should the bed be ready? We quote the fixed price after the survey; your belongings are covered by liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB) (§ 451e: €620 per m³), and additional insurance is available on request. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive nationwide; destinations with their own page can be found under Locations.

Arrangements at the destination

We arrange keys, parking and moving-in time with relatives in the new town, so that nobody has to wait at the destination and everything is prepared.

Separate travel

The lorry drives ahead, and the senior follows with relatives – so the day does not become too long and breaks are possible at any time.

Senior moves

We set up the bed, armchair and kitchen first at the destination. That way the new flat is liveable on the very first evening – especially important for a senior move over a long distance.

Part load

If only a few pieces of furniture are coming along, a part load can reduce the cost of the long route. In return, the delivery date is less freely selectable.
PLANNING A FRESH START

Six steps to your destination

Moving closer to the family is a big decision for many older people. These six steps help ensure that not only the furniture arrives, but the person too: with a doctor, contacts and an everyday life that soon feels familiar again. Plan them together with your relatives.

01

Close, but not too close

Short distances to the children help, but so do your own neighbours, baker and doctor within walking distance. Check buses, trains and shopping around the new flat.
02

Assisted travel

If you travel by train, you can book help getting on, changing and getting off via the Mobility Service Centre – by 8 pm the day before.
03

Find a doctor in advance

The 116117 doctor search helps you find a GP in your new town. Collect prescriptions for the first few weeks from your current doctor.
04

Register within two weeks

Even when moving to another federal state: register within two weeks at the new registration office (§ 17 BMG), with the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung).
05

Reorganise care

A care level (Pflegegrad) remains in place, but the care service usually does not. Look for a service in the new town early and inform the long-term care fund (Pflegekasse).
06

Make new contacts

Senior clubs, the parish or a local association: relatives can find out in advance where to make connections – this helps against loneliness in the new city.
AFFORDABLE OVER LONG DISTANCES

Part load on the long route

Share the trip, cut the costs
With a part load, several orders share one trip heading in the same direction. For a long-distance move in later life this pays off for small volumes: favourite furniture, a few boxes, pictures. Collection and delivery dates are less freely selectable; relatives at the destination accept the shipment. We quote the price after a survey.

TOPICS IN PART 13

New
city, new surroundings

Planning a move to the family

Part 13 of our series is devoted to the long-distance move in later life, usually to be near children or grandchildren: how do you find a suitable flat in an unfamiliar city, how do you travel without stress, and what has to be done first in the new town? You can find more on long distances under Long-distance moves. We also talk about care, finding a doctor and how to make connections in a new city, so that the new address soon becomes a home. And we explain why the lorry and the senior are better off travelling separately and how a part load can reduce the cost of the long route.

Choosing the flat and surroundings

Closeness to the family, but also a doctor, shops and a bus stop within walking distance: these criteria shape everyday life. Check them before signing, whether for a senior move into a flat or a private move into assisted living.

Separating transport and travel

The lorry with packing service and careful furniture transport goes ahead, and the senior follows with relatives. That keeps the day calm, and at the destination the essentials are already in place.

The first weeks at the destination

Registration, GP, care service and first contacts: tackling these points early helps you settle in faster. With few belongings a part load reduces costs, and at the destination a parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) makes unloading easier.

FAQ

Questions about long-distance moves in later life

Journey, process and costs.
A senior move should be planned at least three months in advance. Important steps are a precise inventory of the furniture, clarifying the new living situation and booking the moving company early. This leaves enough time for dealing with the authorities, changes of address and stress-free organisation without time pressure.

Finding the right flat in the new city

Being close to children and grandchildren is the most common reason for a long-distance move in later life. But the surroundings are just as important: a doctor, pharmacy, shops and a bus stop should be within walking distance, so that everyday life does not depend solely on the family.

If possible, view the flat together. How relatives can support the move from afar is covered in Part 3 on help from a distance. Then plan the moving date at your leisure.

Journey and arrival: plan the lorry and the person separately

A long day in the lorry is too tiring for older people. Better: we load, and relatives accompany the journey by car or train. Help getting on, changing and getting off the train is arranged by Deutsche Bahn's Mobility Service Centre; you should book by 8 pm the day before.

At the destination we set up the bed, armchair and kitchen first. Registration at the new registration office (§ 17 BMG) follows within two weeks.

Costs of a long-distance move: what matters

The calculation is based primarily on volume and distance (from €3.85/km). This is followed by the floor, lift and, if necessary, a parking restriction zone. If you also need furniture assembly or a part load, you should say so early on.
