Long routes in summer: the travel day and time decide

Arriving well

Unsere Firma Long-distance moves in the summer holidays: know the driving bans, avoid the waves of holiday traffic, and build in breaks and a buffer.

A long-distance move in July or August meets packed motorways: the summer holidays in the federal states start at staggered dates, and on many weekends holidaymakers are on the road at the same time. For heavy removal lorries there are also driving bans – on Sundays anyway, and in the summer months on Saturdays too on certain routes. At Beste Umzug Unternehmen we therefore plan the travel day first and arrange loading and unloading around it. Whether it is a small private move or a flat over several floors: in summer, a weekday with an early start is usually the more relaxed choice.

If the lorry is stuck in a traffic jam, the cargo space heats up in the sun. Candles, medicines, vinyl records and battery-powered devices are therefore better off travelling in your own car. We quote the fixed price after the survey, your belongings are covered by liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB) (§ 451e: €620 per m³), and additional insurance is possible. Give us a call and we will discuss the travel day, departure time and the parking restriction zones (Halteverbotszonen) at both addresses – so the long journey becomes predictable.

KEEPING AN EYE ON THE ROUTE

How we plan long routes in the travel season

Travel day, breaks, buffer

For a move over several hundred kilometres, the calendar matters most in summer. We check whether the route falls under the Saturday holiday driving ban, schedule the departure for the early morning hours and plan in the statutory driving breaks. We load delicate belongings so that they do not stand directly against the sunny side wall. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21), work at a fixed price after a survey and handle moves in both directions – find out more under long-distance moves.

Packing service

On long routes the load has to sit firmly. With a packing service boxes are packed stably and do not slide even in stop-and-go traffic.

Travel day

We choose the travel day so that Sunday and holiday driving bans do not interrupt the trip – including for an office move to another city.

Senior moves

If older relatives are moving to be near you, we plan the senior move so that they do not have to spend the long journey in a hot car behind the lorry.

Securing the load

Straps, blankets and a well-thought-out loading order keep furniture in place over long distances – including during furniture transport through holiday traffic.
WELL PREPARED

Six points for the long journey in summer

If you are moving far in summer, you are planning against traffic jams, driving bans and heat all at once. These six points help with the preparation – from the holiday calendar to the key handover at your new home, whether you travel with us or rent a van yourself and ask friends.

01

Check the holiday calendar

The summer holidays start on different dates in the federal states. Check when the departure and destination regions have holidays, and avoid the first days of the holidays.
02

Weekday instead of Saturday

On Saturdays in July and August a driving ban applies on certain routes to lorries over 7.5 t, and on Sundays nationwide. A weekday is easier to plan.
03

Set off early

If you start early in the morning, you drive in the cooler hours and arrive while it is still light. This makes unloading at your new home much easier.
04

Factor in breaks

After 4.5 hours of driving time, a 45-minute break is mandatory in commercial transport from 3.5 t. Factor this time into your arrival.
05

Plan a buffer

Traffic jams in summer are hard to predict. Do not plan the key handover to the minute, but with a few hours of leeway.
06

Two parking restrictions

The lorry needs a parking restriction zone both at the moving-out address and at the destination. The deadlines in each city differ – apply for both in good time.
FIXED TOURS

Part loads on long routes

Ride along instead of your own tour

With a part load (Beiladung) your belongings travel on a tour with other jobs. In summer especially, holiday traffic can delay the arrival. So plan for a flexible delivery day and take heat-sensitive items with you yourself.

What is different in summer

In summer, several things come together with a long-distance move: waves of traffic at the start of the holidays, the driving ban for heavy lorries on Saturdays in July and August on certain routes, and high temperatures in the cargo space when the vehicle is stuck in a jam. On top of that comes deregistering at the old address and registering at the new one within two weeks of moving in. If you are moving with children, you will find tips on holiday planning in the article Moving in the summer holidays.

Travel planning

Holiday calendar, driving bans and parking restrictions at two addresses: a list of dates makes your private move, senior move or student move to another city predictable – even when the motorways are full.

Load and heat

With a packing service, secured furniture transport and a small removal for single items, everything arrives firmly strapped down, even after hours of stop-and-go – delicate items travel in the cooler car.

Businesses and small quantities

For an office move or company relocation to another city, we plan the travel day without a driving ban; for small quantities, a part load or a furniture taxi on fixed tours is a good option.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions on long-distance moves in the holiday season

Answers on driving bans, traffic jams, departure time, breaks and heat-sensitive loads.
Cover wooden furniture with moving blankets and do not place it directly against the sunny side wall of the cargo space. On long routes in summer the vehicle is often stuck in traffic, and then the load bed heats up. Lacquered furniture and veneers should therefore be well padded and firmly strapped down so that they do not chafe on the way.

Driving bans for lorries in July and August

The holiday travel regulation (Ferienreiseverordnung) prohibits lorries over 7.5 t permissible total weight, and trailers behind lorries, from driving on certain sections of motorways and federal roads on Saturdays in July and August from 7 am to 8 pm. In addition, under § 30 StVO a driving ban applies to these vehicles for commercial goods transport on Sundays and public holidays from midnight to 10 pm.

For a large move with a heavy lorry, a weekday is therefore the safe choice. Candles, medicines and battery-powered devices are better taken in the car, because the cargo space heats up in a traffic jam. With every private move we plan the loading order accordingly.

Avoiding the waves of holiday traffic: choosing the day and time

The summer holidays start at staggered dates in the federal states, so holiday traffic is spread over weeks. Experience shows it gets particularly busy at the start of the holidays and at weekends. An early start on a weekday shortens the time spent in traffic jams.

Plan a 45-minute break after 4.5 hours of driving time and build in a buffer for the arrival. You will find the process, costs and a checklist in the article Planning a long-distance move.

How the price for long routes is calculated

First we determine the volume of your belongings, then the distance (from €4.10/km). The floor and lift determine the staffing required, while a parking restriction zone saves time. If needed, we add a part load.
