Long-Distance Moves in Winter: Planning the Route Driving Times and Arrival

Long-distance moves in winter
Hundreds of kilometres through the winter
Plan realistically
On a long-distance move in winter, three limits come together: the lorry's driving time, the mandatory driving and rest periods, and the scarce daylight. Under EU law, the following applies to lorries over 3.5 t: after 4.5 hours of driving, a break of at least 45 minutes is compulsory, and as a rule no more than 9 hours of driving time are allowed per day. Anyone who also wants to load and unload often needs two days for long distances. At Beste Umzug Unternehmen we plan this honestly instead of overloading the day.
Then there is the weather: it may be dry in Berlin while there is snow in the low mountain ranges or the Alpine foothills. We therefore check the warning situation for the start, the route and the destination and plan in a buffer. For private customers, we discuss as part of our private move service whether one or two days make sense; more on long distances under Long-distance moves. We give you the fixed price after the survey, and your belongings are covered under the German Commercial Code (HGB).

The longer the distance, the more important the schedule: departure, breaks, arrival and unloading have to fit into the short winter days. We plan this with you in advance, and we give you the fixed price after the survey. Simply call us on 01625978461.

How we plan long-distance moves in winter
Honest driving times, a clear arrival
For a winter move over long distances, we calculate with lorry speed, statutory breaks and an allowance for wintry roads. If that makes the day too long, we load on the first day and unload on the second – better rested in daylight than exhausted in the dark. At the destination we clarify parking, the parking restriction and access in advance. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and operate nationwide. We give you the fixed price after the survey; your belongings are covered under the HGB.

What we look out for on long distances
On long distances in winter, cold, wet and delays have a greater effect than on a move within the city. With a realistic schedule, good padding and a plan for the weather at the destination, your belongings arrive safely.

Part loads over long distances
If your belongings do not need the whole cargo space, a part load is an affordable alternative over long distances: your furniture travels on a long-distance moving tour that is already planned. In winter it is best to plan a wider delivery window, as a tour with several stops can take longer in snow.

Moving
far when it is cold
The final part of our winter series is about long distances. A move from Berlin to Munich, Freiburg or Hamburg in winter is above all a question of time: lorry speed, driving times and short days set tight limits. We show how to draw up a realistic schedule, keep an eye on the weather at the destination and prepare for arrival. This applies to a private move to another city just as much as to a long-distance move with a company.

Frequently asked questions about long-distance moves in winter
Schedule, driving times and route in winter
From Berlin to Munich it is around 585 kilometres by road. A loaded lorry needs a pure driving time of about eight hours for this, plus a break of at least 45 minutes after 4.5 hours at the latest. As a rule, lorries over 3.5 t are not allowed more than 9 hours of driving time per day. In December, however, a day has just under eight hours of daylight – loading, driving and unloading in one day is hardly feasible on such routes.
So plan long long-distance moves in winter over two days: loading and departure on the first, unloading in daylight on the second day. In snow, allow for an additional buffer. You will find a timeline covering eight weeks in the article Long-distance move in 8 weeks.
Weather at the destination and preparing for arrival
The weather at the destination can be quite different from Berlin: in the low mountain ranges and the Alpine foothills there is often considerably more snow in winter. Check the warnings of the German Weather Service (Deutscher Wetterdienst) for the start, the route and the destination. At the destination you need a parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone), which is applied for at the local authority with its own deadlines – take care of it early.
Clarify who clears snow at the destination, and take documents, medication and delicate plants in your own car. Our page Berlin – Munich shows an example route.
