Removal Vans in Winter: Tyres Snow Chains and Driving Style

The vehicle in winter
Winter-ready on the road with the removal van
Tyres, chains, load
On a winter move, the vehicle itself is a safety factor. Germany has a situational winter tyre requirement: in black ice, packed snow, slush, ice or frost, a motor vehicle may only be driven with winter tyres (§ 2 (3a) of the German Road Traffic Regulations, StVO). Since 1 October 2024 only tyres with the Alpine symbol count; plain M+S tyres are no longer sufficient. For heavy lorries, winter tyres on the drive axles and the front steering axles are enough. We give you the fixed price for your move after the survey.
If you are moving yourself with a hired van, you should check the tyres and tread when collecting it – 1.6 mm is the legal minimum, while the ADAC (German automobile club) recommends 4 mm in winter. An ice scraper, hand brush and antifreeze in the screenwash belong on board. For a private move with Beste Umzug Unternehmen, we advise you on timing and process so that the van is not stuck in rush-hour traffic on slippery roads.

Fixed price after a survey instead of hire-van stress
In winter, vans, chains and ice are a reason for many people not to drive the move themselves. We take care of transport, carrying and load securing and give you a fixed price after the survey. Contact us by phone on 01625978461 to receive an individual quote for your winter move.

How we bring your belongings through the winter
Drive, secure, unload
On winter moves, what counts besides the carrying is above all the drive: on ice our vans run on the prescribed winter tyres, and the load is secured with straps and blankets so that nothing shifts when braking on a slippery road. We plan the departure time and route with an eye on the weather and traffic. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and operate nationwide. We give you the fixed price after the survey, and your belongings are covered under the German Commercial Code (HGB).

What we look out for on the road
A winter move does not end at the front door: on the road, tyres, load securing and driving style are decisive. We plan the journey with a buffer and secure the load so that it stays in place even when braking on ice.

A part load instead of a hire van in the snow
For individual pieces of furniture, a part load is particularly worthwhile in winter: you don't need to hire a van, check tyres or drive in snow yourself. Your belongings travel secured on a planned tour.

Through
the winter with the removal van
This part of our winter series is about the drive: which tyres does the removal van need, when are snow chains compulsory, and how do you secure the load on a slippery road? For self-drivers with a hire van, the same law applies as for removal companies. Snow chains are required where the corresponding traffic sign is shown, and with them the maximum speed is 50 km/h. For long-distance moves in winter we also recommend a time buffer when planning.

Frequently asked questions about removal vans and winter tyres
Winter tyres and snow chains: what applies to removal vans?
In black ice, packed snow, slush, ice or frost, motor vehicles may only be driven with winter tyres (§ 2 (3a) StVO). Since 1 October 2024 only tyres with the Alpine symbol meet this requirement. For lorries over 3.5 tonnes (classes N2 and N3), it is sufficient if at least the drive axles and the front steering axles are fitted with them. The legal minimum tread is 1.6 mm; the ADAC recommends 4 mm for winter.
Snow chains are compulsory where the ‘Snow chains required’ traffic sign is shown. With chains, the maximum speed is 50 km/h (§ 3 (4) StVO). If you hire a van, you should ask the rental company about winter tyres and chains – more on this in the article Hiring a van.
Securing the load and adapting your driving
On a slippery road, the braking distance of a loaded van increases considerably. Load heavy furniture at the bottom and close to the front wall, secure it with ratchet straps and fill gaps with blankets so that nothing slides. Boxes stand tightly and at the same height, with delicate items on top.
Drive with more distance and calm steering. Clear snow off the roof before setting off – sheets of snow coming loose endanger others. Ramps and load beds quickly become slippery in frost; lay out mats.
