Senior moves part 7

A moving day without a rush for older people

Safely through the day

Unsere Firma A day bag with medication, a quiet spot, the bed set up first: moving day in later life step by step.

Moving day itself decides whether a senior move is remembered as exhausting or as manageable. Noise, strangers in the flat and empty rooms can be very unsettling for older people. A fixed schedule, a companion and a quiet place help – in the old flat, at the neighbours' or already in the new flat. Our team works in an orderly sequence and keeps walkways clear so that nobody trips over boxes.

On request, we pack the day before, and on moving day we dismantle, transport and reassemble in the new flat – bed, armchair and lamps first. Through our private move service a parking restriction zone, upper-floor flats and narrow access routes can also be organised; in Berlin, parking restriction signs must be in place at least 72 hours beforehand. If the move is to another city, we plan a separate delivery day, more under our long-distance moves.

PERSONAL ADVICE

Planning moving day together – at a fixed price

Fixed price after a survey, schedule included

During the free survey we discuss how moving day will run: when does the team arrive, which rooms first, where is the quiet spot for the older person? You then receive a fixed price. Call us on 01625978461. For the transport we are liable under the German Commercial Code (HGB) (§ 451e: €620 per m³); additional insurance for your move in later life is available on request.

Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

AN ORDERLY PROCESS

How moving day works with us

Order instead of chaos

In the morning the team leader briefly goes through the plan with you or your relatives: which furniture first, what is not to be loaded, where the day bag is. Then we work room by room, protect floors and the stairwell and keep a path clear. In the new flat we set up the bed and armchair first, so that there is a place to rest before the remaining boxes are distributed. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and quote the fixed price after a survey. Destinations with their own page can be found in the locations overview.

Schedule

The team leader explains the sequence in the morning and is your contact person all day – for you, your relatives and questions about the process.

Packing service

If packing is done the day before, moving day stays shorter and calmer. Our packing service labels boxes by the rooms of the new flat.

Quiet zone

One room or one armchair stays untouched until the end – a quiet spot for the older person, away from the noise and the furniture transport.

Bed first

In the new flat we set up the bed first and make it on request, so that nobody has to wait for boxes on the evening after the move.
MOVING DAY CHECKLIST

Six points for a safe moving day

These six points make sure that moving day stays safe and manageable for older people. Go through them the evening before together with a companion – then there will be no surprises in the morning.

01

Pack a day bag

Medication for several days, ID, glasses, hearing aid, charging cable, keys and phone numbers belong in a bag that does not go into the lorry.
02

Choose a companion

A familiar person stays with the older person all day, explains what is happening and makes sure there are breaks, food and drinks.
03

Create a quiet spot

A chair away from the walkways, at the neighbours' or already in the new flat: anyone not sitting in the middle of the bustle stays more relaxed.
04

Keep walkways clear

Clear away rugs and loose cables early. Walking aids such as a rollator or stick get a fixed place so that they do not get packed.
05

Inform the care service

Inform the care service and home emergency call provider about moving day and the new address in good time, so that care continues without a gap.
06

The first evening

Bed made, light in the hallway and bathroom, food in the fridge: that is all you need on the first evening. Everything else gets unpacked over the next few days.
SMALL MOVES

Part load for a few pieces of furniture

Shared trip, shorter day
A part load uses free cargo space on a trip that is planned anyway. For seniors with few pieces of furniture this reduces costs. Important for moving day: collection and delivery are sometimes on different days – plan for a bed and the day bag in the meantime. We quote the price after a survey.

TOPICS IN PART 7

Moving
day step by step

From morning to the first evening

Part 7 of the series accompanies the move in later life through the most important day: what goes in the day bag, who accompanies the older person, how do walkways stay clear and what needs to be ready in the new flat in the evening? We also show how to inform the care service and home emergency call provider in good time, how relatives can structure the day and why setting up the bed early brings more calm than quick unpacking. What our team takes on on moving day can be found under Private move. The article The first day in your new home continues with settling in.

Preparing the evening before

Pack the day bag, clear the walkways, decide on a companion: using the evening before makes the senior move or private move the next morning considerably calmer and clearer for everyone involved.

The order on moving day

First the boxes, then the large furniture, the quiet zone last: with a prepared packing service and orderly furniture transport, the old flat stays safe to walk through until the last box.

Arriving in the evening

Bed, light, medication, something to eat – that is all you need on the first evening. Individual pieces of furniture for relatives can follow later by part load, so that moving day itself does not become too long and tiring.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about moving day with seniors

Process, companions, liability, costs and region.
A senior move requires more consideration for physical limitations, emotional attachment to belongings and often more complex dealings with the authorities. We take more time for advice, plan barrier-free solutions and communicate every step clearly and understandably. The aim is a stress-free, safe transition to the new living situation without physical overexertion.

The week before moving day: day bag and companion

The last few days before the senior move decide whether moving day will be calm. Pack a day bag that does not go into the lorry: medication for several days, medication plan, ID, health insurance card, glasses, hearing aid, charging cable, keys and important phone numbers. Clarify who will accompany the older person on moving day and where they can rest – in an untouched room, at the neighbours' or already in the new flat.

Inform the care service, home emergency call provider and GP about the moving date and the new address. If you need a parking restriction zone, in Berlin you apply for it at the road traffic authority of the district office (Bezirksamt) two to four weeks beforehand; the signs must be in place at least 72 hours before the move. Our team agrees the process with you in advance.

Accessibility and safety on moving day

On the actual moving day, safety and a calm process are our top priority. We carry heavy pieces of furniture over stairs, through narrow hallways and narrow door frames so that you do not have to lift anything yourself. Protective mats and blankets protect floors and the stairwell; walkways stay clear, and walking aids keep a fixed place.

In the new flat we first create a safe, walkable area with the bed and armchair before the remaining boxes are distributed. That way you can feel at ease from the first moment without having to trip over boxes. Grab rails in the bathroom should be fitted by a tradesperson beforehand so that they can already be used safely on the first evening.

What moving day costs

Whether a small 1-room flat or a large family property – our prices are fairly calculated. Prices start at €349 for 1 room, from €609 for 2 rooms, from €905 for 3 rooms and from €1,344 for 4 rooms. For houses and villas we prepare a suitable individual quote. If you are moving further away, a price from €3.95 per kilometre applies for the long-distance move. The easiest way to clarify all details is during a free survey.

What the effort on moving day depends on

The cost of a move is made up of several components: volume, distance (from €3.95/km), floor and lift. If needed, a parking restriction zone is added. You can also book furniture assembly or a part load.

Services for a relaxed moving day

These services take the heavy work off older people on moving day:

Moving day over long distances too

With a move to another city, collection and delivery are often on two days. We are based in Berlin and drive throughout Germany. Destinations with their own page can be found in the locations overview, long distances under Long-distance moves.

Always one step ahead.
