Commuter guide, part 9

Out of the city, job in the city – how to plan the move

Location, route, authorities

Unsere Firma Moving from Berlin to the surrounding area: check the commute by regional train or car, know the authorities in Brandenburg and plan the move.

Many Berliners move to the surrounding area for more space and keep their job in the city. Whether this works out depends on the commute: is the new flat on a regional train or S-Bahn line with a direct connection to your workplace? How far is it to the station, and are there park-and-ride spaces there? If you drive, check the route at peak times – and the parking situation at your workplace in Berlin. A test run on a normal working day shows more than any map app.

When you move across the state border, the authorities change too: registration with the registration authority of the new municipality, vehicle registration at the district's registration office. For buses and trains, the Deutschlandticket remains valid. We take care of the move to the surrounding area: at Beste Umzug Unternehmen you receive a fixed price after the survey. FROM BERLIN TO THE SURROUNDING AREA

How we plan a move across the city boundary

Two authorities, one removal team

A move to the surrounding area often means: an old building with a narrow stairwell in Berlin, a house with a driveway outside the city. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21, Moabit), know the no-parking zone applications with the Berlin districts and clarify which authority is responsible at your new address. On request we apply for both parking spaces; the signs must be in place at least three full days beforehand. We handle the rest with our packing service and furniture assembly. We give you the fixed price after the survey; your belongings are covered by liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB).

No-parking zone

In Berlin we apply for the parking space with the district, and at the new address with the local authority there. The no-parking zone needs lead time at both ends.

Furniture transport

From an old building in Berlin to a house with a garden: for garden furniture, a workbench or bikes, we plan space in the cargo area during furniture transport.

Packing service

The longer journey to work starts even before the move, when you renovate the new home. Our packing service takes care of the boxes in Berlin.

Assembly service

More space often means new furniture. We dismantle old furniture, transport it and reassemble it at the new address – with furniture assembly.
WELL THOUGHT THROUGH

What should be checked before moving to the surrounding area

More living space is a good reason to move to the surrounding area – if everyday life comes along with it. Commuters should clarify these points before the move, ideally during a test run on a normal working day.

01

Train with a direct connection

A regional train or S-Bahn without a change to your workplace makes the surrounding area work for everyday life. Check the frequency in the morning and evening.
02

Getting to the station

On foot, by bike or by car: how do you get to the station, and is there park-and-ride or secure bike parking there?
03

Driving at rush hour

If you drive, test the route at peak times – and clarify beforehand where and at what cost you can park at your workplace in Berlin.
04

Everyday life without the city

Nursery, school, shopping, doctor: are they in the town, or do you need the car every time? That belongs in your calculation too.
05

New authorities

Registration with the new municipality within two weeks, vehicle registration with the district. Re-registering is compulsory, even across the state border.
06

A plannable move

For the move to the surrounding area, we give you a fixed price after the survey in Berlin.
SMALL LOADS

Part load for moving to the surrounding area

Share load space, cut costs

If you only have a little furniture and a few boxes, a part load to the surrounding area can be cheaper than a van of your own. Your belongings travel with other jobs. Because the route has several stops, there is a time window – plan a flexible day for it.

Three
questions before moving to the surrounding area

All about your move

If you move from the city to the surrounding area and keep working in Berlin, you should answer three questions: how do I get to work every day? How do I organise everyday life without the city's short distances? And which authorities are now responsible? The first question is answered by a test run at the real commuting time, the second by a look at nurseries, shops and doctors in the town, and the third by the new municipality's website. For moves to places further away, you will find information under Long-distance moves.

Test your commute

A test run by train or car at peak times helps with every private move, senior move or student move to the surrounding area: you see whether the frequency and journey time really work in everyday life.

More space, more belongings

With a suitable packing service, careful furniture transport and flexible small transport, bikes, garden furniture and tools come along too – the household often grows when you move into a house.

Authorities and access

The same applies to an office move, company relocation, public authority move, part load or furniture taxi: at the new location a different authority is responsible for the parking space and registration – we clarify this beforehand.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about moving to the surrounding area for commuters

Answers on location, dates, costs, part loads, re-registering in the new municipality and shift work.
First test the commute from the new place of residence, then plan backwards from the moving-in date: four to six weeks for the no-parking zone, packing and mail forwarding. Bear in mind that at the new location a different authority is responsible for the parking space – ask there early about the processing time.

The right location in the surrounding area: train, station, car

For commuters, the surrounding area is only as good as its connection to the city. Most important is a rail line without a change to your workplace – regional train or S-Bahn – with a frequency that remains predictable even when there are delays. Check the way to the station: is it manageable on foot, are there secure bike parking or park-and-ride spaces? With the Deutschlandticket, fare zones in local transport do not matter.

If you commute by car, test the route at peak times and clarify the parking question at your workplace. Weigh the longer journey honestly against the rent – how to do this is explained in part 3 of this series.

New municipality, new authorities: what changes after the move

When you move from Berlin to the surrounding area in Brandenburg, you register with the registration authority of the new municipality within two weeks of moving in (§ 17 BMG) – the Federal Registration Act (Bundesmeldegesetz) applies in the same way in both states. You change the address in your vehicle registration certificate (Fahrzeugschein) without delay at the registration office of the new district; you may keep your Berlin number plate.

Dog tax, rubbish collection and nursery places now also go through the municipality. You apply for the parking space at the new house with the road traffic authority responsible there. More about registration in the article Re-registering your car.
