Moving in later life

Smaller, low-barrier, closer to family

Well prepared yourself

Unsere Firma is based in Berlin-Moabit and carries, dismantles and reassembles – at the pace you set.

Anyone moving in retirement usually has a clear reason: the stairs are getting hard, the flat has become too big, or the children live in another city. A move in later life is therefore above all a decision about the new form of housing – a low-barrier rented flat, assisted living or a care home. Once that decision is made, planning begins with giving notice: as a tenant you usually have a three-month notice period (§ 573c BGB), even if the move is for health reasons.

Next comes the question of what comes along. Measure the rooms of the new flat and draw your favourite furniture into the floor plan before parting with other pieces. Pack in stages: one cupboard a day, not everything in the last week. We are based in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21), handle carrying, dismantling and assembly and, on request, packing; more on this under senior move. For household goods we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre; for valuable heirlooms, additional insurance is worthwhile.

Four decisions before the move

It gets easier in this order

A move in later life becomes easier when the big questions are settled before the boxes: where to, when, with which furniture and with what help. We are based in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and take care of transport, dismantling and assembly and, on request, packing. Dealings with authorities, contracts and applications remain in your hands or those of your relatives – but during the survey we still go through the order of things together. We only state the fixed price once we have seen what is coming along; that way there are no surprises about costs on moving day.

The new form of housing

Low-barrier flat, assisted living or care home: check the lift, thresholds and bathroom before you sign.

The notice date

Tenants give three months' notice (§ 573c BGB). The law makes no exception for moving into a care home – ask about a replacement tenant.

Choosing furniture

Draw your armchair, bed and wardrobe into the floor plan of the new flat. Whatever does not fit is given away or sold early.

Help on moving day

Clarify who packs, who carries and who sets up the new flat – family, neighbours or a moving team with assembly.
WELL PREPARED

Six things many people sort out too late

Besides the flat and furniture, there are points that will be missing after the move if nobody thinks of them in time. Many of them can be dealt with calmly in the last few weeks in the old flat.

01

Grant from the care fund

With a care level, up to €4,180 per measure is possible for the living environment (§ 40 Abs. 4 SGB XI) – apply before the move.
02

GP and prescriptions

Find a practice at the new place early and take your medication for the first few weeks and your medication plan with you yourself.
03

Re-register within two weeks

After moving in, you must register at the citizens' office (Bürgeramt) within two weeks; you need the landlord's confirmation for this.
04

Post and contracts

Pension, health insurance, bank and insurance companies need the new address; a mail forwarding order helps for the first few months.
05

Keepsakes

Pack photo albums, letters and jewellery yourself and transport them personally – they do not belong in the removal van.
06

The first night

Bed, lamp, glasses, phone and slippers should be to hand on the evening of the move. Have the bed set up first.
FOR SMALL LOADS

Little furniture, long distance

When only part comes along

If only part of the furnishings comes along – into a room in assisted living, for example, or to family in another city – a shared load can be cheaper than a lorry of your own. Your goods then travel with other consignments in the same direction; in return there is a time window instead of a fixed day.

Housing,
furniture, settling in

The three big topics

A move in later life is less about logistics than about decisions: which form of housing will still suit you in five or ten years, which furniture carries the memories, and how does the new environment quickly become familiar? Take time for each of these questions and involve relatives without handing over the decision. If the family is helping with the move, Moving with older relatives gives the perspective of children and grandchildren. If the new home is further away, we plan a long-distance move from Berlin.

The right form of housing

A low-barrier flat with a lift and a level-access shower often lasts longer than expected. Assisted living also offers contact persons in the building, a care home full care. Visit several options and ask about waiting lists before you give notice on the old flat.

Downsizing without regret

Start with rooms that stir few emotions – cellar, storeroom, kitchen. Favourite furniture goes into the plan first. Relatives can take over what is left; the rest can be cleared on request by a household clearance or house clearance.

Settling into the new surroundings

Familiar things in their usual places help you settle in: pictures at eye level, the armchair by the window, the lamp next to the bed. In the first few days, walk the route to the pharmacy, bakery and bus stop and introduce yourself to the neighbours.

FAQ

Questions about moving in later life

Form of housing, notice, grant, furniture, costs and settling in – briefly answered.
A move in later life needs more time for decisions and less physical work for you yourself. It is often about a smaller or low-barrier flat, assisted living or a care home place. A lot of furniture and keepsakes have to be chosen, and fixed deadlines such as the notice period run in parallel. Anyone who starts early and packs in stages experiences the move as much calmer.

Why a move in later life needs more lead time

A move in later life differs from changing flats at thirty mainly in pace. Decisions about furniture and keepsakes take time, and your strength is not enough for ten hours of packing at a stretch. On top of that come fixed deadlines: notice on the old flat runs for three months, and assisted living flats and care home places often have waiting lists.

So allow three months rather than six weeks. First settle the flat and the date, then the choice of furniture, and finally the packing. Anyone with a care level should apply to the care insurance fund for a grant before the move – under § 40 Abs. 4 SGB XI up to €4,180 per measure is possible; whether the move qualifies is decided by the fund.

Practical tips for moving day

On moving day itself, one simple rule helps: you do not have to carry anything. Stay in a quiet place where you can answer questions – the old or the new flat, depending on where you are needed more. Boxes labelled with room names in large writing make it easier for everyone to find their way, and a bag with medication, papers and glasses stays with you.

In the new flat, have the bed, armchair and kitchen set up first. Pictures, books and decorations can follow in the days after, ideally with the family's help. Inform authorities, the pension insurance, doctors and insurance companies of the new address in the first week.
