PLANNING WITH A SCHOOLCHILD

School and moving

The change of school helps determine the moving date

Changing well prepared

Unsere Firma Changing school when moving: deregistering, registering at the new school, documents and differences between the federal states.

With school-age children, the moving date often depends on the school year. The fewest lessons are missed if you move during the holidays – your child then starts straight away in the new class on the first day of school. Because education is a matter for the federal states, early contact with the new school is particularly worthwhile when moving to another state, where curricula, foreign languages and school types may differ. We take care of the transport; all services under Private move.

Holiday dates are in demand with moving companies – so reserve your day early. After the survey we give you the fixed price. Your belongings, including your schoolchild's desk and computer, are covered by liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB) (§ 451e: €620 per m³ of cargo space); additional insurance is available on request. Call us on 01625978461 to arrange a holiday date for your family move.

MOVING WITH A SCHOOLCHILD

How we support the change of school

Holidays, desk, schedule

For schoolchildren, what matters is that they do not have to search for exercise books among boxes on their first day at the new school. On request we plan the move so that the desk, books and school things are set up first. We give you the fixed price after the survey; your belongings are covered by liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB). We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and operate nationwide; destinations with their own page can be found under Locations.

Holiday dates

Moves during the school holidays are in demand; the earlier you enquire, the more likely it is that moving day fits in with the last day of school at the old place.

Packing service

While you deal with deregistration, school reports and registration, we pack the household – the school things stay within reach until the end.

Assembly service

We set up the desk, chair and shelf early at the new place so that homework has its place again in the very first school week.

Furniture transport

We pack computers, instruments and craft work individually; for valuables we recommend additional insurance beyond the HGB liability.
CHANGING SCHOOL

Six steps to changing school

A change of school has two sides: leaving the old school and registering at the new one. These six steps help parents to get both done in good time.

01

Inform the old school

Tell the class teacher early; the school issues a report or leaving certificate and passes on records in accordance with the state rules.
02

Contact the new school

Ask the new school or the local education authority (Schulamt) about free places; for primary schools, the place of residence often decides which school is responsible.
03

Gather documents

Usually required are the latest school report, the child's birth certificate or ID and proof of the new registered address.
04

Compare the curriculum

Education is a matter for the federal states: the order of foreign languages and school types differ; in Berlin and Brandenburg, primary school lasts six years, elsewhere usually four.
05

Set the date

The fewest lessons are missed if the move falls in the holidays; otherwise a change at mid-year, when reports are issued, is a good option.
06

Support the arrival

A conversation with the new class teacher in the first few weeks helps to identify gaps early and support the child in the new class.
SMALLER QUANTITIES

Part load for single items

When not everything moves at once

If part of the family moves ahead at the start of the school year, the rest often follows weeks later. A part load is suitable for such smaller quantities, especially on a long-distance move: your belongings travel on a route that is going in that direction anyway.

SCHOOL

date and desk

For families with school-age children

This part of the series is dedicated to families with school-age children: when to inform the old and new schools, which documents registration requires and why a move to another federal state needs more lead time. Then there is the children's room, which should quickly work again with the desk and school things. For transport within the city there is the private move, and for long distances the long-distance move.

Deregistering and registering

Inform the old school early, ask the new school or the local education authority about free places, and keep the school report, ID and proof of registration ready in a folder that does not end up in a moving box.

Desk first

Pack the school things as the last box and take them with you in the car; we set up the desk, chair and lamp first at the new place during the furniture transport.

Date and federal state

The holidays are the best time; when changing federal state, clarify the curriculum, foreign languages and the school type of the new school early.

FAQ

Questions about changing school when moving

Registration, documents and dates for families with school-age children.
Talk about the upcoming family move early and in an age-appropriate way to ease fears. Show photos of the new home and involve your child actively in the planning, for example when packing the children's room. Small rituals such as a farewell visit to friends also make the emotional transition easier and provide security during the change.

Moving a children's room with a desk

For schoolchildren, the children's room is also a workplace. Pack school things, exercise books and the pencil case last in a separate, clearly labelled box so that they are immediately to hand on the first day of school. Let your child decide which books and games come along and what gets sorted out – that gives them a degree of control at a time full of change.

During a private move, we set up the desk, chair and shelf early at the new place. That way homework has a fixed place again in the very first week.

Planning the change of school and registration properly

Education is a matter for the federal states. When moving within the city, ask the new school or the local education authority about free places; for primary schools, responsibility is often based on the place of residence. If you are moving to another federal state, compare the curriculum, the order of foreign languages and the school type early – in Berlin and Brandenburg primary school lasts six years, in the other states four.

Registration usually requires the latest school report, the child's ID or birth certificate and proof of the new address. How children cope with the change is described in the article Mastering a change of school; we answer questions about the moving date on 01625978461.

What a family move costs

Whether a small flat or a large house – our price structure is clear and easy to follow. For a 1-room flat you pay from €339, for a 2-room flat from €599, for a 3-room flat from €889 and for a 4-room flat from €1,279. Houses and villas always receive an individual quote, as numerous factors have to be taken into account. The price per kilometre for long-distance moves is from €3.90. We give you the exact price after a free survey – for holiday dates, ideally early.

Price factors for a family move

The basis is always the volume of your belongings. Added to this are the distance (from €3.90/km), the floor and whether a lift is available. For narrow streets we recommend a no-parking zone – in Berlin the signs must be up at least 72 hours before the move. We are happy to combine this with furniture assembly or a part load.
