THE FIRST WEEKS

Moving in during winter

Warm and dry in your new home

Heating, airing, living

Unsere Firma Moisture from the move, cold outside walls and full rooms: how your new flat gets through its first winter well.

A winter move brings more moisture into the flat than you might think: slush on shoes, damp boxes, moist furniture blankets, perhaps freshly painted walls. At the same time the rooms are often still cold and the outside walls chilly. Moisture condenses on cold surfaces – and that is where mould develops. On every private move we set up furniture at a distance from the outside wall on request so that air can circulate behind it.

The first weeks are decisive: heat evenly, air the rooms briefly and vigorously several times a day and unpack damp boxes first. A simple hygrometer shows whether the humidity is in the green zone; for living spaces, 40 to 60 % is considered good. We give you the fixed price for your move after the survey, and your belongings are covered under the German Commercial Code (HGB). For long-distance moves we coordinate the arrival so that you can heat the flat beforehand.

How we help with moving in during winter

Space, order, dry boxes

When setting up, we pay attention to the indoor climate: on request we place large wardrobes at a distance from the outside wall so that air circulates behind them. Damp boxes do not go into cellar corners or in front of cold walls, but into a heated room to be unpacked soon. We take the furniture blankets back with us. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and operate nationwide. We give you the fixed price after the survey; your belongings are covered under the HGB.

Packing service

With a packing service and help with unpacking, no damp boxes are left standing in the cold storeroom for weeks at the end.

Office move

During an office move we place filing cabinets at a distance from outside walls – paper attracts moisture and quickly goes mouldy against cold walls.

Senior moves

With a senior move the new flat should be warm on the first evening. We set up the bed and armchair first, at a distance from the cold window.

Furniture transport

With furniture transport we remove the furniture blankets once things have warmed up and take them back with us so that no damp fabrics remain in the flat.
INDOOR CLIMATE

Preventing mould after the move

Moisture from the move, chilled walls and new furniture in unfamiliar places: in the first winter in a new flat it pays to keep an eye on the indoor climate. These rules help ensure that no mould develops after your winter move.

01

Heat evenly

Do not let rarely used rooms get cold either. Cold walls attract moisture; even warmth is more economical than constantly turning the heating up.
02

Short bursts of airing

Open the windows wide for a few minutes several times a day instead of leaving them permanently tilted. That way the walls do not cool down.
03

Space from the outside wall

Place wardrobes and sofas a few centimetres away from outside walls. In winter, mould forms particularly easily behind furniture placed tight against the wall.
04

Use a hygrometer

A hygrometer shows the humidity. For living spaces, 40 to 60 % is considered good; if it is permanently well above that, air the rooms more often.
05

Empty boxes promptly

Unpack damp boxes first and take empty cardboard out soon. Wet cardboard gives off moisture for a long time.
06

Use the thermostat correctly

A thermostat turned up to full does not heat faster; it only regulates to a higher target temperature. Choose the right setting.
SMALL LOADS IN WINTER

A part load for items that follow

The low-cost alternative

For individual pieces of furniture that follow after moving in, a part load is an affordable solution, for example for students or single households. Your belongings travel on a tour that is already planned. In winter we agree a time window with a buffer and pad everything against cold and wet.

HEATING & AIRING

in well after a winter move

One team, every service

The fourteenth part of our winter series is about the time after the move. Once the furniture is in place, the first winter in the new flat begins – with chilled walls, a lot of moisture from moving day and furniture in new places. We show how to heat and ventilate properly, where furniture should stand and how to recognise damp problems early. That way your new home stays warm, dry and healthy after your private move.

Heating after moving in

Preheat, warm evenly, set the thermostat correctly: this is how the new flat quickly becomes cosy and stays dry after a private move, senior move or student move.

Placing furniture correctly

With a packing service, careful furniture transport and flexible small removals, wardrobes and sofas stand at a distance from the outside wall – so air can circulate.

Airing and checking

Whether after an office move, company relocation, part load or furniture taxi: short bursts of airing and a hygrometer show early on whether the indoor climate is right and whether moisture is collecting on windows or outside walls.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about moving in during winter

Answers on heating, airing and mould.
Yes, a winter move is perfectly feasible. Away from the turn of the month and public holidays, dates are often easier to get. What matters are a time buffer for ice, cleared paths and a preheated new flat so that furniture and electronics do not end up in cold rooms. Also clarify when you will get the keys.

Heating in the first days after moving in

If possible, switch the heating on in the new flat a few days before your winter move. Warm walls absorb the moisture from moving day better, and furniture and electronics come into a temperate room. If the radiators gurgle, ask the property management about bleeding them.

After that, heat evenly and do not let the storeroom and bedroom get cold either. What matters on the first evening is covered in the article the first day in your new home.

Airing and placing furniture to prevent mould

During the heating season, air the rooms briefly and vigorously several times a day with the window wide open – in cold weather a few minutes is enough. Permanently tilted windows chill the walls. For living spaces, humidity of 40 to 60 % is considered good; a hygrometer shows you the figure.
