Moving safely on your own: lifting valuables and unknown helpers

Singles guide · Part 4
Moving alone without hauling everything alone
Moving safely on your own
If you move on your own, you know the question: who carries the heavy sofa, and who holds the other end? Nobody should carry heavy and bulky furniture alone – the risk to your back, the stairwell and the furniture is too great. With our private move service, well-practised teams take over carrying, securing and loading. We adapt dates to your working life, even at short notice if capacity is available. More details about our services can be found under private move.
Safety also concerns your property. Jewellery, cash, ID, laptop and keys do not belong in the lorry but in your own bag. During loading, the flat should not be left standing open unattended. For damage during transport we are liable under the German Commercial Code (HGB) (§ 451e: €620 per cubic metre of loading space); for valuable items, additional insurance is available on request. We quote the fixed price after the survey – matched to the size of your 1- or 2-room household.

Do not carry heavy items alone – request a survey
Fixed price after a survey, liability under the HGB
Call us on 01625978461 and arrange a free survey. We look at the heavy items and the routes and then quote a fixed price. We are happy to advise you on long-distance moves and moves within the city alike.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

How we make moving alone safer
A well-practised team instead of random helpers
If you book unknown helpers through classified ads, you often do not know who they are or who pays in the event of damage. With us this is clearly regulated: for transport and loading we are liable under the German Commercial Code (HGB), and additional insurance for valuable items is available on request. Our team carries with straps and blankets, secures the load and works to an agreed plan. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and operate nationwide; we quote the fixed price after a survey. Destinations with their own page are shown in the locations overview.

Few belongings? Safely by shared load

Safety
when moving alone
Part 4 is about safety when nobody from your family or circle of friends is helping: how do you lift boxes correctly, why do valuables not belong in the lorry, and what should you consider with unknown helpers from classified ads? We also show how photos of the flat's condition help at the handover and in the event of damage. For small households we explain when a shared load fits.

Frequently asked questions about safety when moving alone
Less weight, less risk
A single person's move is the perfect opportunity to declutter and take only what is really needed. Use the six-month rule: anything you have not used in the last six months can be sold, donated or disposed of.
Fewer items mean fewer boxes, less transport volume and therefore often lower moving costs. With a fixed-price move in particular, a reduced household pays off directly – and every box that does not have to be carried is one risk fewer for your back.
Safety and organisation for people moving alone
If you are moving alone, you should pay particular attention to safety: do not carry heavy pieces of furniture alone but get professional help. For damage during transport and loading we are liable under the German Commercial Code (HGB) – with private helpers this is often unresolved. How to lift boxes without straining your back is explained in the article Lifting heavy furniture correctly.
A digital checklist for changes of address, contract cancellations and re-registration is also advisable – this way singles keep a full overview even without support from family.
What a single person's move costs in Germany
Moving costs vary greatly depending on the size of the flat and the distance. As a rough guide: 1-room flat from €365, 2-room flat from €594, 3-room flat from €905, 4-room flat from €1,309. Larger properties such as houses or villas receive an individual quote. For long-distance moves, an additional €3.80/km is calculated. For exact figures we recommend a free survey.
Moving price calculation: what counts
- Moving volume
- Number of kilometres from €3.80/km
- Floor and lift
- Need for a parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone)
