The best date for a student move: start of semester end of month, day of the week

Timing in the academic year
The calendar has a say
Schedule cleverly
At universities, the winter semester begins on 1 October and the summer semester on 1 April; at universities of applied sciences (Fachhochschulen), usually a month earlier. Just before then, many students move at the same time – and mostly at the end of the month, because that is when tenancy agreements end. If you choose a day in the middle of the month or during the week, you have more choice with moving companies, parking restrictions and the citizens' office (Bürgeramt). We give you the fixed price for your student move after the survey.
Work backwards from your preferred date: in Berlin, the road traffic authority needs around four weeks for the parking restriction, the signs must be in place at least three full days beforehand, and after moving in you have two weeks to register. If your old and new tenancy agreements overlap by a few days, the move becomes more relaxed. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) – find out more about our student move.

Survey, fixed price, fixed day

How we secure your date
A fixed day instead of hoping
At the change of semester, the problem is not the carrying but the calendar. That is why we fix the moving day bindingly after the survey, apply for the parking restriction in good time on request and plan dismantling, transport and assembly so that everything is in place by the evening. For transport damage, we are liable under the HGB (§ 451e: €620 per m³). We are based in Berlin-Moabit; on Google we are rated 5.0 from 119 reviews.

Six rules for the right moving day
The best moving day is where tenancy agreement, semester and official deadlines fit together. These six rules help with planning.
Know the semester start
Avoid the end of the month
During the week
Four weeks' lead time
Buffer before lectures
Take exams into account
Part load for flexible dates
If you are a few days flexible on the date, a part load can be cheaper: your belongings travel along with other jobs as soon as a tour is heading in your direction. That makes sense above all for a little furniture over a long distance – and if the new room is already free a few days beforehand.

When
a student move fits best
This part is about just one question: when is the best time to move? The answer depends on your university's semester calendar, the end of your old tenancy agreement and the deadlines for parking restrictions and registration. Whether a weekend really is better than a working day, you can read in the article Moving at the weekend: pros and cons.

Frequently asked questions about the right moving date
The ideal time for your student move
Many students move shortly before the start of the semester – at universities, before 1 October or 1 April, and at universities of applied sciences usually a month earlier. On top of that comes the end of the month, when most tenancy agreements end. If you fix your date four to six weeks in advance, you have more choice.
The day of the week also plays a role: Saturdays are booked up quickly, there are more free dates during the week, and the citizens' office and property management can be reached. If your old and new tenancy agreements overlap by a few days, you can choose the day freely and do not have to get everything done on one date.
Checklist for the week before the move
Before the big day comes, you should draw up a clear list of tasks: getting boxes, dismantling furniture, booking an appointment at the Bürgeramt and cancelling or adjusting contracts. Reserving a parking space outside your new accommodation early also makes moving day considerably easier.
Also think about important documents such as your student ID, tenancy agreement and ID card, which you should transport separately and where you can see them. That way you will not lose any important papers during your student move and will always keep track.
