Moving Sustainably

Moving sustainably: carry less, throw away less

Moving greener

Unsere Firma is based in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and offers a shared load in a shared lorry for small quantities.

A sustainable move need be neither complicated nor expensive. The biggest lever is volume: whatever you sort out and pass on before the private move does not have to be packed, carried and driven. After that, the material counts – second-hand moving boxes from friends or from classified ads, blankets and towels instead of bubble wrap. This saves waste and often money too.

Bundling helps with transport: with a shared load, several consignments share one lorry, and on long-distance moves this saves trips. In Berlin you can hand in usable furniture and household goods at selected recycling centres of the BSR, Berlin's city cleaning company; whatever does not find a new owner can end up in the NochMall in Reinickendorf. Larger retailers take back old electrical appliances free of charge. We give you the fixed price for the move after the survey.

THE BIGGEST LEVERS

Where a move saves resources

Volume, material, trips

A move saves the most resources when less is transported: whatever you give away, sell or donate beforehand needs no space in the lorry. After that, packaging counts – second-hand or borrowed boxes instead of new ones, blankets instead of film – and the transport itself. We are based in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and offer a shared load for small quantities, in which several consignments share one lorry. Further destinations can be found under locations; we give you the fixed price after the survey.

Sort out

Give away, sell or donate what you no longer need before the move – every item less saves packaging, space and trips.

Second-hand boxes

Sturdy moving boxes last for several moves. Ask friends or look in classified ads, and pass them on afterwards.

Blankets instead of film

Woollen blankets, towels and bed linen pad furniture and crockery just as well as bubble wrap – and they are coming along anyway.

Bundle trips

One lorry of the right size instead of several small trips; with few belongings, a shared load shares the lorry with other consignments.
SIX LEVERS

How to make your move use fewer resources

A sustainable move is above all a well-planned one: less volume, fewer new materials, fewer trips. These six levers make the biggest difference – and most of them save money along the way.

01

Sort out early

Go through room by room four to six weeks before the move; whatever can go gets time for selling or donating instead of bulky waste.
02

Donating in Berlin

Hand in usable items at selected BSR recycling centres; whatever does not find a new owner can go to the NochMall.
03

Return old appliances

Retailers with 400 m² or more of electrical sales area take back small old appliances up to 25 cm free of charge, even without a new purchase (§ 17 ElektroG).
04

Borrow boxes or buy second-hand

Second-hand or borrowed boxes instead of new ones; after the move, fold them flat and pass them on to friends or via classified ads instead of putting them in the paper recycling.
05

Pad with textiles

Towels, blankets and clothing as padding material – this saves film and space, because the textiles are coming along anyway.
06

A lorry of the right size

One vehicle of the right size instead of several trips; for small volumes, consider a shared load, which shares the loading space.
SHARING LOADING SPACE

Shared load – sharing loading space

Fewer trips for small quantities
With a shared load, your furniture and boxes travel on a lorry that is heading your way anyway. You only pay for the loading space you need, and no additional vehicle is on the road. In return you get a time window instead of a fixed date.

FROM SORTING OUT TO DISPOSAL

Sorting
out, packing, disposal

Three phases, three levers

Moving sustainably involves more than the choice of boxes – it starts with sorting out and ends with disposing of what nobody wants any more. In Berlin, usable items can get a second life through the BSR's second-hand chain, and large retailers take back electrical appliances. On a private move, thorough sorting out saves volume and therefore money; whatever is left over we clear away with our house clearance.

Before the move: sort out

Start early and go room by room: keep, sell, give away, donate, dispose of. Whatever you pass on needs no box and no space in the lorry – that lowers the volume and therefore the fixed price.

When packing: save material

Second-hand moving boxes, blankets and towels instead of film, and do not empty drawers if the piece of furniture can be carried anyway. This way there is hardly any packaging waste at the end, and the lorry is not filled with half-empty boxes that only cost space and therefore money.

After the move: dispose of things properly

Fold boxes flat and pass them on, hand in old electrical appliances at the retailer or recycling centre, bulky waste via the BSR. In Berlin, usable items get a second chance via the BSR recycling centres and the NochMall; residual waste thus remains the exception rather than the rule.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about moving sustainably

Boxes, donations, old appliances, shared load and costs – answered briefly.
A sustainable move saves resources in three places: less volume through sorting out, fewer new materials through second-hand boxes and textiles as padding, fewer trips through a lorry of the right size or a shared load. On top of that comes proper disposal: donating instead of bulky waste, electrical appliances back to the retailer.

Packing material: second-hand instead of new

Besides sorting out, the biggest lever for a sustainable move lies in the packing material. Ask friends or look in classified ads for second-hand ones and pass them on afterwards. For plates, glasses and pictures, towels, blankets and clothing make good padding – they are coming along anyway and replace bubble wrap.

Drawers and chests of drawers with light contents can sometimes stay full if they are well secured – that saves boxes. Label boxes with removable tape or notes so that they can be reused on the next move. How many boxes you need depends on the household; on a private move we estimate this at the survey too.

Passing on furniture and appliances instead of disposing of them

Much of the furniture sorted out during a move is still in good condition and does not have to go to bulky waste. In Berlin you can hand in usable items at selected BSR recycling centres; whatever does not find a new owner there can go to the NochMall, the BSR's second-hand department store in Reinickendorf. Charity shops and classified ads are good routes too.

Old electrical appliances do not belong in bulky waste: retailers with at least 400 m² of sales area for electrical goods take back an old appliance of the same type when you buy a new one, and small appliances with an edge length of up to 25 cm even without a new purchase (§ 17 ElektroG). Whatever is left over we collect on request with our house clearance.

What does a move really cost?

A realistic moving price is made up of several components: the volume of your household goods, the distance (from €4.10/km) and structural conditions such as the floor and lift. A parking restriction zone may also be necessary. Optional services such as furniture assembly and a shared load extend the offer.
