FAMILIES WITH TEENAGERS

Teenagers and moving

Having a say instead of being taken along

Planning together

Unsere Firma Moving with teenagers: inform them early, let them have a say, keep friendships going and plan the change of school carefully.

For young people, a family move often means more loss than for younger siblings: their circle of friends, their club, perhaps a first relationship and a school where they have found their place. Teenagers therefore want not only to be informed but to be asked. Explaining early why the family is moving and handing over real decisions – for example about their own room – takes a lot of pressure off. What we take on for a private move is discussed during the survey.

Let your teenager pack and label their own room – it gives them control in a situation they did not choose. We take care of dismantling, carrying and reassembling the furniture at the new place. We give you the fixed price after the survey; your belongings are covered by liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB), and additional insurance is available on request. SHARING OUT THE TASKS

How we share the work

Your teenager packs, we carry

Young people prefer to pack their own room – and that is a good thing. We take on whatever needs strength and tools: dismantling the loft bed, wardrobe and desk, transporting the computer and sound system safely and reassembling everything at the new place. We give you the fixed price after the survey, and we are liable for transport damage under the German Commercial Code (HGB). We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and operate nationwide, more under Long-distance moves.

Assembly service

We dismantle the loft bed, desk and wardrobe and reassemble them at the new place – following the plan your teenager has made for their room.

Packing service

On request we pack the kitchen and living room, while your teenager packs their own room – with boxes and materials that you receive in good time.

Electronics

We transport the computer, monitor and sound system with padding. Your teenager backs up their data beforehand, and cables go labelled into a separate box.

Furniture transport

We load the guitar, drum kit, bicycle or sports equipment so that they are quickly ready for use again at the new place – in time for the first session at the new club.
HAVING A SAY

Six things that help teenagers

Young people accept a family move more easily when they are taken seriously. These six points give them a say and a sense of control, without the parents having to hand over responsibility.

01

Inform them early and honestly

Explain why the family is moving as soon as it is decided. Teenagers notice when something is being kept from them and then react with more resistance.
02

Let them choose their room

If possible, let your teenager choose their room and plan the furnishings, wall colour and furniture layout themselves.
03

Packing yourself

The young person packs their own room. They decide what to sort out – parents only help if they ask.
04

Make a farewell possible

A farewell party, a last evening with friends or a weekend visit after the move make the change more bearable.
05

Show them new places beforehand

Look at the school, sports club and meeting places in the new neighbourhood together beforehand, or explore them online.
06

Allow feelings

Anger and sadness are part of it. Listen without immediately offering solutions – it often takes weeks for a teenager to settle in.
SMALL LOADS

Part load for late arrivals

When not everything has to go straight away

A drum kit, a workbench or the furniture of an older child who will follow later do not have to go on moving day. A part load is suitable for such smaller quantities: your goods travel on an existing route and share the cargo space with other consignments.

Supporting young people well

This part of the series is aimed at families with young people. It covers how to inform teenagers early and let them have a say, how friendships survive the family move and what to bear in mind when changing school in the upper years. There are also formalities that affect young people themselves from the age of 16, such as registration and the ID card. What younger children can do themselves during the move is covered in the article Involving children.

Giving them a say

Choice of room, furnishings, wall colour, what gets sorted out: every decision the teenager is allowed to make makes the move a little more their own project rather than a decision made by the parents.

Keeping friendships

Messaging apps and video calls help, but do not replace meeting up. Plan fixed visiting weekends and allow friends to come and visit during the holidays.

School and formalities

In the upper years, clarify early with the new school which courses can continue. From 16, the young person must register themselves and needs their own ID card.

FAQ

Questions about moving with teenagers

Having a say, school, friends and formalities.
For a family move we recommend at least 8–10 weeks' lead time. That leaves enough time for school registrations, notice periods and organising the private move. For a long-distance move, planning should start even earlier so that all dealings with the authorities and logistical details are clarified in good time.

Involve teenagers early and let them have a say

Tell your teenager early and honestly that the family is moving and why. Hand over real decisions: their own room, the furnishings, what gets sorted out. Packing their own room lets them keep control over their things.

A visit to the new place, with a look at the school, club and meeting places, helps them picture their new life. Saying goodbye is just as important: a party, a last evening with friends and the promise that visits will be possible.

School, ID card, registration: what applies to young people

Education law is a matter for the federal states. If the family moves to another state, subjects, course systems and exam rules differ – especially in the upper years of grammar school (gymnasiale Oberstufe). Clarify early with the new school which courses will be recognised.

Young people under 16 are registered by the adult they move in with (§ 17 BMG). From 16, the young person must register themselves and must hold an identity card (§ 1 PAuswG); the new address is entered at registration.

How much does the move cost? From a single room to a house

Whether a small flat or a large villa – everyone finds the right price with us. 1-room moves start from €375, 2-room moves from €589, 3-room moves from €905 and 4-room moves from €1,279. For houses and villas: individual enquiry, individual quote. For long-distance moves we charge from €4.20/km. The most accurate figure comes from a free survey, after which we give you a fixed price.

What determines the moving price

  • Volume of the goods to be moved
  • Distance from €4.20/km
  • The floor and whether there is a lift
  • Need for a no-parking zone (signs at least 72 hrs beforehand)
