YOUR ROUTE TO WORK IN YOUR TAX RETURN

Commuter guide, part 14

What the move means for your distance allowance

Kilometres, days, year of the move

Unsere Firma Distance allowance after the move: measure the new route, split the working days in the year of the move and deduct home-office days correctly.

With a move, a figure changes for commuters that goes into the tax return every year: the distance to the first place of work. Since 2026 the distance allowance (Entfernungspauschale) has been €0.38 for every full kilometre of the one-way distance, from the first kilometre (§ 9 EStG). The shortest road connection is decisive – a longer route only counts if it is obviously more convenient in terms of traffic and you use it regularly. For the allowance, it does not matter whether you travel by car, train or bike.

In the year of the move, you split the year into two periods: the old route applies to the working days before the move, the new one afterwards. Note down the moving date and count the days on which you actually travelled to work. We take care of the move itself: at Beste Umzug Unternehmen you receive a fixed price after the survey and an invoice that you keep for tax purposes. WELL DOCUMENTED

How we make your move plannable and documented

Fixed price beforehand, invoice afterwards

For the tax return, receipts count. That is why we give you a fixed price after the survey and issue an invoice after the move in which transport, packing service and assembly are listed separately. Labour costs for services in the household may, depending on the case, count as household-related services (§ 35a EStG, 20%, at most €4,000 a year). We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21, Moabit) and drive within the city and nationwide. Your belongings are covered by liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB).

Fixed price

After the survey you know the price. The fixed price applies to the agreed scope – good for your planning in the year of the move.

Clear invoice

Transport, packing service and assembly are listed separately on the invoice. That way the items can be allocated in the tax return.

Packing service

If you commute a lot, you have little time in the evening. Our packing service takes care of the boxes; the service is listed separately on the invoice.

Long-distance move

If you move to another city for your job, we drive from Berlin nationwide. For a long-distance move we plan the loading day and arrival in advance.
STATED CORRECTLY

Six rules for your route to work in the tax return

The distance allowance is simple – if you know a few rules. Commuters should observe these six points after a move, so that the tax office does not ask questions and no kilometres are lost.

01

One-way distance

You state the one-way distance from your home to work, not the journey there and back combined. Only full kilometres count.
02

Shortest connection

The shortest road connection is decisive. A longer route only counts if it is obviously faster and you use it regularly.
03

Real working days

The allowance is only available for days on which you travel to work – once per day. Holidays and sick days do not count as working days.
04

Split the year of the move

Before the moving date the old route applies, afterwards the new one. Record the date and the travel days for both periods.
05

Deduct home office

For home-office days you get the daily allowance of €6 instead, at most €1,260 a year. Enter these days separately.
06

Take subsidies into account

Tax-free employer subsidies for a local transport ticket reduce the deductible allowance. They are shown on the wage tax certificate.
SMALL LOADS

Part load: move cheaply, invoiced properly

Small move, small price

If you only have a few pieces of furniture and boxes, a part load (Beiladung) is often the cheapest solution: your belongings travel with other jobs. Because the tour has several stops, there is a time window instead of a fixed time. Keep the invoice for tax purposes.

Well planned and reliable

For tax purposes, the move raises two questions for commuters. First: how high is the distance allowance from the move onwards? That depends on the new route and the travel days. Second: are the moving costs themselves deductible? As a rule they are if the move is job-related – for example because the daily journey there and back is shortened by at least one hour or a new job is the reason. More on this in the article Moving costs when changing jobs; on long distances under Long-distance moves.

Route and days

A calendar with the moving date, travel days and home-office days helps with every private move, senior move or student move: you have all the figures for the tax return together.

Collecting receipts

For the packing service, careful furniture transport and flexible small transport, keep the invoices – together with the leases and proof of the new route to work.

Checking special cases

For an office move, company relocation, public authority move, part load or furniture taxi, separate rules apply. If in doubt, clarify with a tax adviser or a wage tax assistance association (Lohnsteuerhilfeverein) what counts in your case.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the distance allowance and moving

Answers on planning, weekends, time required, costs, insurance, leave, registering your address and moves abroad.
Plan four to six weeks of lead time and note down the moving date – you will need it later for the tax return. Then fix the no-parking zone, packing and mail forwarding. Measure the new route to work via the shortest road connection straight after moving in.

Recalculating the route to work after the move

For the distance allowance, what counts is the one-way distance from the new flat to the first place of work, measured via the shortest road connection and rounded down to full kilometres. Since 2026, €0.38 per kilometre applies from the first kilometre. An example: if you live 18 kilometres away after the move and travel on 200 days, you get 18 × €0.38 × 200 = €1,368.

The allowance is capped at €4,500 a year, unless you drive your own car. You may use a longer but obviously faster route if you use it regularly. For the allowance, the means of transport does not matter.

Splitting the year of the move into two periods

In the year of the move, the old distance applies up to the moving date and the new one afterwards. For both periods, count only the days on which you really travelled to work. Enter home-office days separately: for these there is the daily allowance of €6, at most €1,260 a year.

Note: all income-related expenses only take effect once together they exceed the employee lump sum (Arbeitnehmer-Pauschbetrag) of €1,230. If the move is job-related, the moving costs are added. If in doubt, a wage tax assistance association can help.

Moving prices and price per kilometre in detail

Before you plan your move, you should know the approximate costs. Our guide prices: 1-room flat from €365, 2-room flat from €579, 3-room flat from €889 and 4-room flat from €1,344. Larger properties such as a house or villa are calculated individually. For a long-distance move we charge from €3.90/km. For an exact quote we recommend a free survey on site.
