Senior moves part 3

The parents are moving, the children live far away

Organised together

Unsere Firma Power of attorney, phone appointments, one person on site: how relatives support a senior move from afar.

Many senior moves are organised by children who themselves live hundreds of kilometres away. They cannot help with packing every afternoon, but want to be sure nothing goes wrong. That is why Beste Umzug Unternehmen provides a dedicated contact person who makes arrangements with the parents and the relatives alike – by phone, by email or during the survey. What we take on is described on the page about the private move.

A clear division of roles is crucial: who signs the quote, who is present on moving day, who handles registration at the citizens' office (Bürgeramt)? For dealing with the authorities, relatives need a written power of attorney; the person moving signs the registration form themselves. We quote the fixed price after the survey, in which relatives can also take part by phone. That way the move becomes a shared family project.

PERSONAL ADVICE

A survey with parents on site and children on the phone

One contact person for the whole family

Arrange a free survey at your parents' flat – you yourself can join by phone. Afterwards everyone involved receives the same fixed price and the same schedule. If the household is moving to another city, you will find tips under Long-distance moves. Call us on 01625978461.

Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

CLEAR AGREEMENTS

How we involve families from a distance

Everyone knows what is happening

When relatives live far away, reliable information matters most. We agree dates with the parents, send the quote and schedule to the children too if desired, and get in touch if anything changes. On moving day a team leader is reachable who can answer questions straight away. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21), drive nationwide and handle the transport at a fixed price after a survey; we are liable under the German Commercial Code (HGB), and additional insurance is available on request. Destinations with their own page can be found in the locations overview.

Contact person

One dedicated person on our side stays in touch with parents and relatives, so arrangements are not made twice and no information gets lost along the way.

Packing service

If the children cannot help with packing, our packing service takes care of the boxes – in agreement with the parents about what goes where.

Senior moves

We work calmly and explain every step, so that older people feel safe and well supported on moving day even without family in the room.

Furniture assembly

We set up the bed, armchair and lamps first in the new flat, so that the parents can sleep well on the evening of moving day – with furniture assembly.
DIVIDING THE TASKS

Who takes on what?

A move organised from afar succeeds when the tasks are clearly divided. These six points should be settled in the family in advance – ideally in writing, so that everyone is on the same page and nobody feels left out.

01

Sort out power of attorney

For the Bürgeramt, the bank or the landlord, relatives need a written power of attorney; a lasting power of attorney (Vorsorgevollmacht) can also be useful.
02

One person on site

Choose a trusted person nearby – a neighbour, friend or grandchild – who can be present at the survey and on moving day.
03

A shared list

A shared list by email or messenger shows everyone which task is done: notice, parking restriction, change of registration, mail forwarding.
04

Regular phone calls

A short call a week with the parents keeps track of things without pressure. It is best to bundle your questions for us into this rhythm.
05

Planning moving day

If possible, relatives travel in for moving day. If not, clarify beforehand who hands over the keys and signs the handover report.
06

The first days afterwards

After moving in, visits or calls help with settling in. Registration at the Bürgeramt must be completed within two weeks.
SMALL LOADS

Furniture for the children by part load

Heirlooms to another city
A part load uses free cargo space on a trip that is planned anyway. For families this means: the chest of drawers for the daughter or the boxes of books for the son do not have to be transported separately. We agree collection and delivery dates with both sides; the price depends on volume and route.

TOPICS IN PART 3

Organising
your parents' move

Even over a long distance

With a move in later life, relatives are often the real organisers – and yet do not live nearby. Part 3 of the series shows how powers of attorney, phone appointments and a trusted person on site can be sensibly combined. We explain which decisions the parents should make themselves, which tasks children can handle even from afar and how to avoid physical strain when packing. That way the parents keep their independence while the family secures the framework.

Defining roles

Who signs, who gives notice, who updates the registration? A written task list that everyone can see prevents duplicated work and makes the senior move or private move transparent for everyone involved.

Packing without the children

With a packing service, careful furniture transport and labelled boxes, the parents do not have to lift anything heavy – and relatives do not have to travel in specially for a packing weekend.

Appointments at a distance

A survey with a phone link, moving day with a trusted person, heirlooms to the children by part load: this is how the whole move can be planned and supported without anyone in the family having to travel many kilometres every week.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions from relatives about senior moves

Power of attorney, arrangements, costs and moving day from afar.
For a senior move, early planning of at least eight weeks is advisable so that visits to the authorities, cancellations and the flat search can be handled without stress. It is also important to draw up a checklist together with relatives and to sort keepsakes step by step. That leaves enough time for emotional decisions and eases the physical and mental strain of the move.

Plan early and divide the tasks within the family

A senior move works best with eight to twelve weeks of lead time – for relatives at a distance this buffer is even more important, because visits have to be planned. Decide right at the start who takes on which task: giving notice on the tenancy, the survey, parking restriction, mail forwarding, registration in the new place. A written power of attorney is needed for dealing with the authorities on the parents' behalf; in Berlin the person moving signs the registration form themselves, and the power of attorney only covers the appointment.

A shared list that everyone involved can see is helpful. Also choose a trusted person near the parents who receives keys and is present on moving day. Our team coordinates with this person and with you so that nothing is forgotten.

Keeping accessibility and safety in mind

When choosing the new flat, seniors should pay particular attention to accessibility – for example step-free access, wide doors or a lift in the building. Non-slip floors and easy-to-reach sockets also make everyday life considerably easier. Throughout the transport our moving team makes sure walkways are safe and reliably protects floors and stairwells from damage.

We also help with furniture assembly so that important items such as beds, seating or aids are set up safely and within easy reach. That way seniors feel comfortable and safe in their new home from day one.

Moving costs for family planning

What does a move really cost? Basically, the costs depend on the size of the flat: we move a 1-room flat from as little as €344, for 2 rooms prices start at €599, for 3 rooms from €915 and for 4 rooms from €1,299. For houses or villas we always prepare an individual quote. Anyone moving further away pays from €4.20 per kilometre for long-distance moves. It is best to arrange a free survey straight away to receive an exact quote.

What the price of your parents' move depends on

  • Moving volume: the more household goods, the higher the price
  • Distance: from €4.20/km
  • Floor and lift situation
  • Parking restriction zone if needed
  • Extra options: furniture assembly, part load

Services that take the load off relatives

These services save parents and children work – even if nobody from the family can help on site.

Parents moving to their children – nationwide

Parents often move to the city where their children live. We are based in Berlin and drive nationwide. Destinations with their own page can be found in the locations overview, longer routes under Long-distance moves.
