Moving after a long-distance relationship

Moving in together
Ending a long-distance relationship: two households, one flat
plan together
The step from commuting to a shared everyday life is both an emotional and a logistical task. When moving after a long-distance relationship, two households are merged, often over several hundred kilometres: Berlin–Munich is around 585 km, Berlin–Hamburg around 284 km by road. The first question is who moves to whom, or whether you look for somewhere new together. Notice periods, volume and route all depend on it. For long routes from Berlin you will find everything under long-distance moves.
When two households are merged, almost everything is there twice: washing machine, sofa, beds, kitchen appliances. Decide before the survey what will be sold, given away or put into storage – less volume lowers the fixed price. Tenants usually give three months' notice; coordinate both flats with each other. What we handle when you move in together
Planning from Berlin
We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and handle moves within the city and, as a long-distance move, to other cities – that is, when one of you lives in Berlin or the shared flat is here. We have no branches in other cities. For the drive to Munich by lorry, including statutory breaks, we allow about eight and a half hours, to Hamburg about four. Furniture is padded and secured; for your household goods we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. We state the fixed price after the survey.

Six questions before moving in together
Before the first box is packed, you should answer these six questions together. They determine cost, date and how relaxed the move will be – and whether everything fits into the shared flat in the end.
Which flat?
Which date?
What moves?
Who registers where?
What about the job?
Who pays what?
Only part is moving? Shared load
If only part of a household moves into the shared flat, such as a few pieces of furniture and boxes, a shared load can be cheaper than a lorry of your own: your goods travel on a trip that is already on the route, with a flexible delivery day.

Flat,
date, registration
A long-distance move after a long-distance relationship raises particular questions: how do the notice periods of both flats fit together? What happens to the second washing machine and kitchen? And will one flat remain as a second home? How to register a secondary residence is explained in our article Registering a second home. That way, step by step, you build a plan for your joint move.

Questions about moving after a long-distance relationship
Two households, one home: how to merge them successfully
When two flats become one, chaos quickly follows if you do not sort things out early. Together, make a list of which furniture and appliances you have twice and decide what to keep, sell or give away. Measure the new flat before you decide on the bigger sofa.
Over long distances it is worth doing the move in one coordinated trip rather than commuting back and forth several times by car. On request, we handle packing, transport and assembly of the furniture in the new flat, so that you can concentrate on your new chapter together.
Planning the best moving date in a long-distance relationship
In long-distance relationships, two tenancy agreements, two notice periods and two employers often have to fit together. Under § 573c BGB, tenants must give notice no later than the third working day of a month to the end of the month after next. Fix the moving date six to eight weeks in advance to secure the removal van and parking restriction zone.
Also plan for registration within two weeks of moving in, mail forwarding, and insurance policies and contracts. A separate list covering both places helps you keep track despite having two addresses.
How we calculate your moving price
The exact cost of a move depends on many factors – the size of the flat, the distance and additional services all play a role. As a guide: 1-room flat from €365, 2-room flat from €615, 3-room flat from €889, 4-room flat from €1,329. For houses and villas we always prepare an individual quote. For long-distance moves we charge from €3.90 per kilometre. The price can be determined most accurately during a free survey.
How the moving price is made up
Besides the actual volume of your household goods, the distance between the old and new home plays a big role – we calculate from €3.90/km. A floor without a lift also increases the effort. For a smooth process we also recommend a parking restriction zone. Services such as furniture assembly or shared load round off the offer.
