Wiener Neustadt guide
Wiener Neustadt: a town in the Steinfeld
Boroughs, offices, daily life
With around 50,000 residents, Wiener Neustadt is the second-largest town in Lower Austria after the state capital St. Pölten. It lies in the Steinfeld, the southernmost part of the Vienna Basin, and has been connected to Vienna by the Südbahn railway since 1841. The town has its own municipal authority (Magistrat) – so municipal offices, not the Vienna authorities, are responsible for parking restrictions and registration. For your private move we take care of packing, transport and assembly.
We are based in Berlin and also move people abroad; it is around 736 road kilometres to Wiener Neustadt via Vienna and the A2 – the route is described on the page Moving Berlin – Wiener Neustadt. Within the EU your household goods need no customs declaration. The Hauptplatz and the pedestrian zones are closed to cars, and fixed loading times apply there. This is how we plan moving day to suit your new address.

What we clarify before moving day in Wiener Neustadt
Loading times, permit, registration form
In Wiener Neustadt, any non-traffic use of the street requires a permit (Bewilligung) from the municipal traffic office (Städtisches Verkehrsamt); applications for work on the street must be submitted at least four weeks in advance. Fixed loading times apply in the pedestrian zones and on the Hauptplatz. We clarify these points with you before moving day. Planning, packing, transport and assembly come from a single source, and after the survey the price is set as a fixed price. Your belongings are covered with liability under the HGB (€620 per m³).

Frequently asked questions about living in Wiener Neustadt
Eight town districts from the Innere Stadt to Civitas Nova
Wiener Neustadt consists of just one cadastral municipality, but since 2007 it has been divided into eight town districts: Innere Stadt, Ungarviertel, Gymelsdorfer Vorstadt, Zehnerviertel, Flugfeld, Josefstadt, Civitas Nova and Heideansiedlung. The Innere Stadt around the cathedral and the Hauptplatz has older buildings and narrow lanes; the Hauptplatz and pedestrian zones are generally closed to cars.
Which location suits you depends on your commute, school and type of housing. If you commute to Vienna every day, pay attention to the route to the station on the Südbahn. During the survey we clarify access, floor and loading time for your new address.
Higher education, work and daily life in Wiener Neustadt

Wiener Neustadt (Lower Austria): traffic office, use of the street and deadlines
Wiener Neustadt is in Lower Austria and is a town in its own right with its own municipal authority. So it is not Vienna’s MA 46 that is responsible for the street on moving day, but the municipal traffic office (Städtisches Verkehrsamt) in Wiener Neustadt. It is located in the Neues Rathaus, 3rd floor, Neuklosterplatz 1, and can be reached on 02622 / 373-417 or at [email protected]. The municipal authority as a whole is based at Hauptplatz 1-3, 2700 Wiener Neustadt.
The traffic office lists these basic rules on its page:
- All “non-traffic” activities on public street land require a permit under the Road Traffic Regulations (StVO).
- Applications for work on and next to the street (§ 90 StVO), such as containers or storing materials, must be submitted at least four weeks in advance.
- Exemptions from driving bans (§ 45 StVO) must also be applied for at least four weeks before first use, stating the vehicle’s registration number.
- Every permit is issued by official notice (Bescheid), which incurs administrative charges and fees. The page does not state any amounts.
The page does not explicitly mention a parking restriction for moves. So ask the traffic office early which permit is needed for your address. You will find general guidance under parking restriction zone. The guide Long-distance move to Austria describes the process and the route from Berlin.
Wiener Neustadt town centre: loading times, short-stay parking zone and change of address
The Hauptplatz and the pedestrian zones of the town centre are generally closed to motor traffic. According to the traffic office, loading times apply there: in the pedestrian zones from 8 to 10 am and from 1 to 3 pm, on the Hauptplatz from 6 to 10:30 am, and in the eastern part of the Hauptplatz additionally from 4 to 6 pm. We plan loading and unloading accordingly. As a parking alternative the town names, among others, the Hauptplatz Garage at Ungargasse 18a with 418 spaces, open around the clock.
A short-stay parking zone also applies in the town centre. According to the town, charges apply Monday to Friday from 8 am to 4:30 pm and on Saturdays from 8 am to 12 noon, and the maximum parking time is three hours. Residents’ parking is fully electronic; according to the town a parking card is no longer needed.
After moving in you must register within three days. The responsible office is the citizens’ service office in the Neues Rathaus, ground floor, Neuklosterplatz 1. The town points out that booking ahead by phone on 02622 / 373-0 is essential. Registration is free of charge. You should bring the registration form (Meldezettel) signed by the accommodation provider and by you, an official photo ID, your birth certificate and proof of citizenship, plus a travel document for foreign nationals.
