Planning instead of surprises
For us, Schwyz is a destination abroad: we are based in Berlin and plan every move to Schwyz individually. In the Flecken around the Hauptplatz the lanes are narrow, while in Ibach, Seewen and Rickenbach the move usually goes to residential neighbourhoods with their own access. What
newcomers to Schwyz should know

We explain where to register, whom to ask about a parking space for the removal van and how to get rid of bulky waste. Frequently asked questions about living in Schwyz
The Flecken, Ibach, Seewen, Rickenbach: the districts of Schwyz
The municipality of Schwyz consists of four districts. The Flecken Schwyz is the historic core with the Hauptplatz, the town hall and the Ital-Reding-Haus; here you live within easy reach of shops and offices. Ibach is home to the knife maker Victorinox and has its own residential neighbourhoods and businesses. Seewen lies towards Lake Lauerz and has Schwyz railway station on the Gotthard line, around two kilometres from the Flecken.
The fourth district is Rickenbach. There are also smaller hamlets such as Ried-Haggen and Ufiberig. In the south-east of the municipality, the Schwyz–Stoos funicular has been running since December 2017. Which location suits you depends on whether you prefer the railway, a hillside or the village centre – when planning the move we check access and parking space individually for each address.
Working and daily life in the cantonal capital
As the capital, Schwyz is the seat of the cantonal administration and of the canton's government and parliament. The best-known company is the knife maker Victorinox in Ibach, the manufacturer of the Swiss Army knife. With the station in Seewen on the Gotthard line, Schwyz is connected to the InterRegio and S-Bahn network, which makes commuting to other places in Central Switzerland easier. It is best to check the current timetable to see how long the journey to your place of work takes.
In everyday life, mountains and history shape the place: the Grosser Mythen is a popular hiking destination, and the Stoos funicular takes you up to the Stoos ski and hiking area. The Bundesbriefmuseum holds the Federal Charter of 1291. Just over 22 per cent of residents have foreign nationality – so newcomers from Germany are no exception in Schwyz.

Residents' office, civil engineering and permits when moving to Schwyz
This guide refers to the municipality of Schwyz; other municipalities in the canton each have their own offices. According to gemeindeschwyz.ch, the municipal administration is located at Herrengasse 17 (Postfach 253, 6431 Schwyz) and is open Monday to Friday from 8:30 to 11:30 and from 13:30 to 16:30, on Thursdays until 18:00. Telephone: 041 819 07 00, email: [email protected].
The residents' office (Einwohneramt) keeps the register of residents. The municipality points out that moves, arrivals and departures must be reported on time; under the cantonal ordinance on residents' registration (§ 10), the deadline is 14 days. You can reach the municipality's online services via the online counter.
For permits, the municipality lists the categories Verkehr (traffic), Öffentliche Räume und Plätze (public spaces and squares), Feste und Anlässe (festivals and events) and Gastronomie (catering). The overview does not show whether a reserved parking space for the removal van is covered there. For traffic questions, the municipality names the civil engineering department (Tiefbau) at Herrengasse 23, telephone 041 819 07 60, email [email protected]; there you can also ask whether signage is needed for your street and with how much notice.
We bring your belongings from Berlin-Moabit to Schwyz and agree access and parking space with you in advance. We describe comparable routes in the guide to moving to Bern; general information can be found under international move.
Customs, lorry charge and bulky waste when moving to Schwyz
On entry into Switzerland, your household goods are cleared by customs. The Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (BAZG) names the transfer of your residence to Switzerland as the most important condition for duty-free import. You must also have used the items personally for at least six months and continue to use them after import. Form 18.44 must be presented. People moving from EU-27 and EFTA states do not need an assurance of a residence permit; the change of residence can be proven by an employment contract, tenancy agreement or deregistration certificate, for example.
Good to know for the lorry: according to the BAZG, vehicles over 3.5 tonnes pay the heavy vehicle charge and are subject to a night driving ban from 22:00 to 05:00 as well as a Sunday and public holiday driving ban. The load weight stated in the vehicle documents must not be exceeded; if overloaded, customs must refuse onward travel. According to the BAZG, your removal company can help determine the weight of the removal goods.
Old furniture before moving in? According to gemeindeschwyz.ch, the municipality explicitly collects bulky waste (Sperrgut) and large bulky waste among its waste categories. Dates, fees and collection points are listed on the municipality's linked sub-pages. To clear your old flat you can book our house clearance, and for the journey from Berlin our long-distance move is the right service.
