Schwyz for newcomers: Flecken Ibach, Seewen and Rickenbach between two lakes

Newcomer's Guide to Schwyz
Schwyz: the Flecken at the foot of the Mythen
The first few weeks
Schwyz is the capital of the canton and district of the same name. The village square lies at 516 metres on the southern slope of the Mythen, between Lake Lauerz and Lake Lucerne. The municipality has four districts: the Flecken Schwyz – so called because it had market rights but never town rights –, Rickenbach, Ibach and Seewen. According to the municipality, 16,708 people lived here at the end of 2025, and the share of foreign nationals was 22.6 per cent. For newcomers from Germany, the border, customs and Swiss official procedures are part of the move.
In the Flecken, the Museum of the Swiss Charters of Confederation (Bundesbriefmuseum), with the Federal Charter of 1291, and the town hall on the main square recall the beginnings of the Swiss Confederation, while Ibach, Seewen and Rickenbach are mainly residential areas with schools and shops. Schwyz station on the Gotthard line lies around two kilometres outside the centre in Seewen. We handle the move from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) as a home removal; the route and customs are described on our page Moving from Berlin to Schwyz.

Moving to Schwyz at a fixed price
After a survey, liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB)
Whether you are moving to Schwyz from Berlin or another German city: after the survey we give you a fixed price for packing, transport and assembly. We clarify access on the slope and space in front of the building in advance, because there are no residents' parking permits in Schwyz. For long routes, read more under long-distance moves.
Quotes available individually based on workload, scheduling and the desired scope of services.

How we prepare your move
Access, customs, date
A move to Schwyz has its own peculiarities: the historic centre is small, lanes lead off the main square in every direction, and access can be tight on the slope. That is why we clarify the vehicle size, stopping place and carrying routes before moving day. We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21); when crossing the border you present Form 18.44 for household removal goods to customs, and we agree the border crossing and date with you. Your belongings are covered under the HGB, and we give you the fixed price after a survey. Destinations with their own page can be found under Locations.

What
newcomers should sort out early
When moving to Schwyz, you deal with two levels: registration, schools and parking are handled by the Municipality of Schwyz, residence permits by the cantonal migration office. Then there are health insurance, a bank account and energy suppliers. If you have children, register them early with the school administration; the primary schools are spread across all districts. You declare your household goods at the border as household removal goods with Form 18.44. We are happy to help with furniture assembly and dismantling kitchens as part of the move.

Seewen is where Schwyz station on the Gotthard line is located, served by InterRegio trains and S-Bahn services. Rickenbach is the fourth district, with its own school catchment area. Families will find schools in all districts, and Lake Lucerne and Lake Lauerz are not far away.

Well-known employers are Victorinox AG and Max Felchlin AG in Ibach, along with retail, trade and the administrations of the canton, district and municipality. Many residents commute by train via the Gotthard line to larger economic areas. Secondary and further education includes the Kantonsschule Kollegium Schwyz, a commercial vocational school and a music school.

Registration and confirmation of residence in the Municipality of Schwyz
For moving in and out, the Municipality of Schwyz refers on its website to the online portal eUmzug (eumzug.swiss). The municipal office at Herrengasse 17 is open Monday to Friday from 8.30 to 11.30 and 13.30 to 16.30, and on Thursday afternoons until 18.00 (tel. 041 819 07 00). The municipality does not state a specific registration deadline on its website; clarify it directly with the municipal office before your move.
Useful to know, according to the municipality:
- If you deregister electronically via eUmzug, your previous municipality sends the certificate of origin (Heimatschein) it holds to the new municipality.
- The Municipality of Schwyz only issues confirmations of residence for Schwyz, Ibach, Seewen and Rickenbach; for previous places of residence, the residents' office there is responsible.
- The State Secretariat for Migration sends expiry notices for foreign nationals' permits 6 to 8 weeks before they expire; if none has arrived a month beforehand, contact the residents' office.
Residence matters for foreign nationals are handled by the cantonal migration office (Steistegstrasse 13, Schwyz, tel. +41 41 819 22 68). According to the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH), compulsory health insurance must be in place no later than three months after taking up residence. Customs and import when moving to Switzerland are explained in our article Moving to Switzerland: customs and formalities.
Village centre, school areas and parking in Schwyz
According to its own statistics, the Municipality of Schwyz had 16,708 permanent residents on 31 December 2025, 22.6 per cent of them foreign nationals. The municipal area covers 5,318 hectares and extends from 443 metres up to the Grosser Mythen (1,898 metres). The municipal school is divided into the catchment areas Herrengasse, Lücken, Ibach, Seewen and Rickenbach.
According to the municipality, the historic centre is relatively small: streets and lanes lead off in all directions from the main square with its church and town hall; the charter museum displays the Federal Charter of 1291, and the tower behind the town hall is considered the oldest surviving witness from the time before the founding of the Swiss Confederation. The municipality supports the centre with measures including local development and the Dorf-Fyrabig in summer.
Important for drivers: the Municipality of Schwyz issues no residents' parking permits, with the exception of trade parking cards (15 francs per day, 10-day card 150 francs, valid in the managed public car parks). Public parking spaces usually cost 1 franc per hour, sometimes with a limited parking time; long-term spaces can be rented in the Hofmatt car park or the MythenForum car park. So clarify the parking space and access before your move. School questions are answered by the school administration (Herrengasse 37, tel. 041 819 07 90).
