Moving to Olsztyn – districts, registration duty and the route
Arriving well
Olsztyn, the capital of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, is one of the greenest large cities in Poland: there are more than a dozen lakes within the city limits, surrounded by forests. The city offers big-city infrastructure with a university, hospitals and an old town, combined with plenty of nature. Anyone moving to Olsztyn for work, family or study covers around 623 km from Berlin – a long-distance move that needs good preparation.
We are based in Berlin and plan your home move to Olsztyn from the survey to the last box – to districts such as Kortowo or Jaroty. Within the EU, no customs duty applies to household goods; more important is registration by the 30th day after moving in. We state the fixed price after the survey; our liability is under the German Commercial Code (HGB), and we can arrange additional insurance on request.

What a move to Olsztyn involves
Long route, clear planning
Around 623 km lie between Berlin and Olsztyn. For a long-distance move to Poland we plan driving times, breaks and the electronic e-TOLL toll for heavy vehicles, so that the lorry arrives on time. During the survey we clarify volume, floor and access – in a prefab block in Jaroty as well as in an older building in the centre. We state the fixed price afterwards. Our liability is under the HGB (§ 451e: €620 per m³). The locations overview shows which destinations have their own page.

What
comes after moving in
A move to Olsztyn raises typical questions: which district is right, how do I find a flat, and which official errands lie ahead? Students at the University of Warmia and Mazury (UWM) often move to the university district of Kortowo, while families tend to choose quieter areas such as Pieczewo or Gutkowo. Anyone working at the Michelin tyre plant will look for good transport links. You can read what we take on for private households under Home move.

Frequently asked questions about living in and moving to Olsztyn
Olsztyn's districts at a glance
Kortowo is the university district around the UWM campus on Lake Kortowo, popular with students and young professionals. If you are looking for historic architecture, you will find it in Śródmieście (the centre), home to the castle, the old town and many cafés.
Jaroty is a large residential district with schools and shopping centres, while Zatorze and Nagórki offer quieter alternatives with public transport connections. Pieczewo and Gutkowo on the edge of the city are characterised by newer housing developments.
Housing market, university and employers
Rents in Olsztyn vary widely depending on location and fittings; compare current listings on Polish portals such as Otodom. Around Kortowo in particular, the market is constantly moving because of the many UWM students, and flats are quickly taken at the start of term.
A major employer is the Michelin tyre plant, along with hospitals, the university and a growing IT and services sector. As the capital of the voivodeship, Olsztyn also offers many jobs in public administration, and tourism around the Masurian Lakes creates further jobs in the region.

Zameldowanie in Olsztyn: the registration duty after moving from Germany
Anyone moving to Olsztyn is subject to the Polish registration duty (zameldowanie). According to the gov.pl portal, you must register with the municipality in which you live – in Olsztyn, that means the city administration. The deadlines depend on your nationality:
- EU and EFTA citizens and their family members register, according to gov.pl, no later than the 30th day after moving in.
- Citizens of other countries must register no later than the fourth day.
A distinction is made between permanent residence and temporary residence of more than three months. According to gov.pl, the registration itself is free of charge. The certificate of temporary residence costs 17 złoty, unless the system registers you automatically online. The legal basis is the Polish Act on Population Records of 24 September 2010.
At the office you need the completed registration form, an ID card or passport and proof of your right to live in the property, such as a tenancy agreement. If you do not own the property, you also need a declaration from the owner. Online registration is possible for EU citizens via gov.pl; you need a Profil Zaufany (trusted profile) or a qualified electronic signature. According to gov.pl, since 1 January 2026 online registration has run exclusively via e-Doręczenia.
You can read an overview of the process in the article Long-distance move to Poland.
Moving from Germany to Olsztyn: customs, proof documents and students
According to German Customs (Zoll), Poland is one of the 27 EU member states. The customs page on the exemption for removal goods (Übersiedlungsgut) describes moves from a non-EU country into the EU; it does not list separate procedures for moves within the EU. You can read how crossing the border works in practice in the article Customs formalities when moving to Poland.
For registration after the first three months, the EU portal Your Europe lists a valid ID card or passport and, depending on your status, further proof:
- Employees: certificate of employment or a confirmation of hiring from the employer
- Self-employed: proof of self-employment
- Students: certificate of enrolment from a recognised institution, proof of comprehensive health insurance and a declaration of sufficient resources
- Pensioners: proof of comprehensive health insurance and sufficient resources
According to Your Europe, no further documents may be required. However, the rules differ from country to country; the Polish information on gov.pl is authoritative for Olsztyn.
Plan early for the start of your studies: if you are moving as a student, gather your proof documents, registration form and tenancy agreement before you leave, so that the 30-day deadline after moving in is met. Documents such as the tenancy agreement, employer confirmation or enrolment certificate belong in your hand luggage on moving-in day, not in the lorry. You will find our offer for this under Student move.
