Frequently asked questions about living in Neuenburg am Rhein
Town centre and localities of Neuenburg am Rhein
Neuenburg am Rhein consists of the town centre and the three localities of Grißheim, Steinenstadt and Zienken; together they are home to around 12,700 people, a good two thirds of them in the town centre. The centre offers short distances to the town hall, shops and the railway station, while the localities have a more village-like character.
The town's history has been marked by destruction: in 1704 Louis XIV had Neuenburg completely destroyed, and in 1940 it was the first German town to be completely destroyed in the Second World War. Many buildings in the town centre therefore date from the post-war period. Opposite, on the French side, lies Chalampé; today's road and railway bridge over the Rhine was opened in 1963.
Living and commuting in the border triangle
Neuenburg am Rhein lies halfway between Freiburg im Breisgau and Basel. Many residents commute to one of the two cities via the A5 or by train; Alsace and Mulhouse can also be reached quickly via the Rhine bridge. If you work in Switzerland and live here, you are a cross-border commuter – so clarify tax and health insurance before moving in.
We deliberately do not give reliable current rent figures for the town here; check offers on the usual portals and the district's rent index, if one exists. Our team plans your moving date to match the flat handover so that you do not pay double rent.
Moving prices by flat size
Our price scale is simple: 1-room flat from €359, 2-room flat from €599, 3-room flat from €905, 4-room flat from €1,289. For a house or a villa we are happy to prepare an individual quote. For a long-distance move we charge from €3.85/km. Take advantage now of a free survey.
What the price in Neuenburg am Rhein depends on
The volume is the biggest cost driver, followed by the distance (from €3.85/km). The floor, the lift and any parking restriction zone also affect the final price. If required, we add a part load or furniture assembly.

Re-registering in Neuenburg am Rhein: appointment at the citizens' office
This refers to Neuenburg am Rhein (postcode 79395) in the district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald in Baden-Württemberg. The Swiss Neuenburg (Neuchâtel in French) is a different place.
The citizens' office (Bürgerbüro) in the town hall (Rathausplatz 5) handles registrations, deregistrations and changes of address. According to the town, an appointment is required, which you can make online via the town's appointment booking or by phone on 07631 791-0. According to the town, the registration obligation applies within two weeks; this corresponds to § 17 BMG (Federal Registration Act).
- Appearing in person is required.
- Landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbescheinigung): the town provides the PDF form on its website.
- ID: bring a valid identity document or a birth certificate.
According to the town, the town hall is open to the public Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 12 noon, additionally on Mondays from 2 to 4 pm and on Wednesdays from 2 to 6 pm. Even so, registration matters require an appointment. It is best to book the appointment before your moving-in day so that you reliably meet the two-week deadline.
According to the citizens' office, deregistration is only necessary if you move abroad and no longer have a home in Germany. When moving within Germany, the new municipality reports the move electronically. The local administrations of Steinenstadt and Grißheim list contact details and opening hours on the town's website; for registrations, deregistrations and changes of address, the town refers you to the citizens' office in the town hall.
How to settle in after moving can be found in the guide Living in Neuenburg am Rhein.
Neuenburg am Rhein on moving day: no-parking zone, car park and waste
The town's service pages do not describe a separate application procedure for moving-day no-parking zones. Under § 45 of the Road Traffic Regulations (StVO), the road traffic authorities decide where traffic signs are put up. So ask the town administration early (07631 791-0, [email protected]) how to apply for a no-parking zone for your street. State the street, the date and the expected duration of the loading work. How we organise no-parking zones is shown on our page on the parking restriction zone.
Parking: the town names the multi-storey car park at Rheintor (Kronenrain 1); its entrance height is 2.1 metres. It is therefore unsuitable for taller vans. The town is also working on a parking management concept. According to a report on the committee meeting of 25 May 2023, a zone with parking restrictions is planned in the town centre; changes remained possible. Check the current status before your moving date.
Waste: according to the town, the waste calendar is available in print at the citizens' office and the local administrations, and online from the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district office (Landratsamt). The town's website does not mention bulky waste; ask the district's waste management company about it.
Public transport: the town points out changed stops due to the closure of the bridge over the B 378 (since 15 June 2026). The route and process from Berlin are described on our page Long-distance move Berlin – Neuenburg am Rhein.
